While I'm more than aware of Selvie's flaws, I always liked him. In '02 that frontcourt trio of him, Caron and Emeka was as quirky a mix of personalities and play styles as I can remember. I wasn't a Yarder during his UConn career, so I nearly spit out a mouthful of coffee the first time I saw someone talk about Selvie drop stepping out of bounds.

While true, the inference is a bad rap. He was an excellent inside scorer. When he got the ball inside it was his job to put it up. But those drop steps over the base line killed me every time.

I never said he couldn't score. He actually had a pretty smooth Jumper from the elbow if I remember correctly.

The one thing I always joked about with my friends re: Selvie was that giving the ball to him in the post was a sure fire way to guarantee that the ball would not be passed any further on that possession. If he got the ball in the post, he was going up with it no matter what.

I thought he tried hard though and I appreciated his effort on those teams.

I remember thinking that he was the first UConn big man that I could recall who actually took the ball to the rim. Of course he often stepped on the baseline as he was making his move, but at least he was going towards the rim.

Selvie gets a bad rap.

Basically, he averaged 11 pts and six rebounds a game for two years - he shot over 50% per game. Had some tunnel vision when he got the ball, but was generally a very useful player. He was just a rougher personality than the debutantes here tend to favor.

My favorite Johnnie moment was during the Arizona game when Eugene Edgerson was doing his faux-retro tough guy routine and Johnnie threatened to punch him in the mouth.

I think it is safe to say, if Selvie was on the current roster, he would be blamed for the collapse of The Big East.

He was a boneyard favorite for blame after any UCONN loss or misfortune.

I don't remember all that many bonehead plays, but he was definitely a black hole. Not a Sam Funches class black hole, but a black hole nonetheless. I think he had two assists in his UConn career. And one of those might've been a pass he bobbled directly to another player who then scored.

He was a decent rebounder, and was also a little foul prone on D. Considering he penchant for putting the ball up every time he touched it, he rarely committed an offensive foul.

Just watched the 02 big east tourn final and I was wondering selvies story. I know a lot of yarders make jokes about him but I was only 14 when he was here so i don't remember his deal. In the game I just watched he was pretty useless out there but that's a small sample.

So can anyone fill me in on how he got here, the expectations for him, and how his career ended up and will be remembered

A lot of info in this thread, he was pretty well summed up.

He was 6'8", 240. A power forward. Pretty athletic. Good dunker, good at running the floor.
I believe he averaged about 12 and 7 his senior year in '02. Would have been great on this year's team.

And it is no exaggeration, he stepped on the baseline making a move at least once a game.

12 and 7 is pretty darn good. For some reason I have no recollection of jonny but Caron was my fav player as a kid.

He played along side Caron Butler, as the PF. Roughly 6'7", kinda wiry, but loved to play in the post despite being undersized. He was a decent role player for the 2 years he played. Surprised he made the list. Appeared to stick around UConn after his playing days to party, from what I heard. Think he got arrested on campus.

All I remember was the classic JC line:

"Johnnie is due for a big year!"

Every year I post "we need Johnny Selvie" when it gets into Spring recruiting. I am serious when I write that. If Nolan was Selvie........you can never have enough decent 4/5 players who step right in, give you solid minutes, and give you a decent 4/5. Rotation. Ask anyone where this team would be if they found a Selvie
