It should no longer suprise me but I doubt I'll ever reach the point where I am not amazed by how short people's memories are.
Look at the stretch from shortly after Stallings won the title at Bama in the early 1990's through the day they flew the private jet into Miami to bring Saban to Tuscaloosa for an interview.
The football program was a mess and had been for more than a decade. Yes, Bama had tremendous history and tradition, an enormous fan base and many deep pocketed, generous boosters. Any program with those factors behind it is never more than one good hire away from returning to prominence. This does not mean that anyone could have done what Saban did at Bama if they got the job. Quite a few "can't miss" coaches have failed under similar circumstances, including a couple at Bama.
