It should no longer suprise me but I doubt I'll ever reach the point where I am not amazed by how short people's memories are.

Look at the stretch from shortly after Stallings won the title at Bama in the early 1990's through the day they flew the private jet into Miami to bring Saban to Tuscaloosa for an interview.

The football program was a mess and had been for more than a decade. Yes, Bama had tremendous history and tradition, an enormous fan base and many deep pocketed, generous boosters. Any program with those factors behind it is never more than one good hire away from returning to prominence. This does not mean that anyone could have done what Saban did at Bama if they got the job. Quite a few "can't miss" coaches have failed under similar circumstances, including a couple at Bama.

The market for staff is crazy hyper.
I wonder what team will figure out how to use NIL deal's to lure coaches to their program first? But that could be a game changer - if you can get the businesses willing to pony up for an assistant the way they would for a recruit.

Everyone forgets or was too young to remember when Saban nearly took Toledo to an undefeated season or what he did at MSU after they got slapped by the ncaa. And as for his luck of getting paired with belichek, he’s been quoted as saying they were the 4 worst years of his life ( although he may have meant living in Cleveland). Regardless, he did not start at LSU or at Bama. Like everyone else he worked his way up the ranks.

FWIW, I think he’d have won at some 3d rate high school.

Now, can we get back to the best hire this program ever made? Or the energetic staff he assembled? Please.

Interestingly, if he had the records he had at Michigan State and LSU, he would be fired in year 3, maybe year 2 in both those places nowadays.

They also got turned down by Rich Rodriguez for the job before Sabannwas hired.

I love the mora hire and what it has done in terms of a shot in the arm. But are we really suggesting that anyone could’ve gone to bama and won 6 nattys and countless SEC championships? And if the argument is that he had unlimited funding (and he does), see Texas, fsu, Miami, Nebraska and countless other programs who throw money at problems thinking it’ll fix everything.

Again, couldn’t be happier to see smiling Jim leading us back. Let’s focus on a return to a relevance and not get caught up in delusions of grandeur.
Might take a few years, but with respect to grandeur, if Mora can recruit even half as good as Saban did up to winning his first NC, then I firmly believe Boston College will be playing 2nd fiddle in New England.

I don't even think he needs to recruit THAT good to be make BC look bad. All Mora has to do is put a competitive team on the field consistently and we can pretty much out recruit BC because of how bad BC is.

We have to be better than BC. We have to beat BC on the field for that to happen.

They definitely out recruited UConn in state, under Edsall, Disco and PP. They got that big all everything defensive lineman from New Canaan, and the kid from New London, and a couple others. Sorry, can’t remember their names right now.

New Canaan was Zach Allen and New London was AJ Dillon, though Dillon went to Lawrence Academy in Mass and was originally committed to Michigan. If my memory is correct, Dillon only went to NLHS his freshman year of high school.

Don’t forget the two kids from Fairfield Prep too. Palazollo and can’t remember the other kids name. Also Backe from Fairfield. These kids wouldn’t of played for Edsall or Disco in a million years, although I seem to recall Allen or Dillon taking an unofficial to Storrs.
