two observations
1- The diversity on this staff is excellent. Great to see. He will be an energetic recruiter and definitely a diamond in rough find
2- Ryan Osborn obviously fell through early on. Doesn't seem like the staff had a massive assistant budget. Did great with the budget Mora was given.

I don’t think it is a money issue. UConn is a pretty big risk for a proven coach.

Ryan Osborne was a ANALYST. In most programs, that means they get paid shinola. So ... his renown gained over the last 12 months, I suspect, led to a internal offer that was attractive.

I think it hurt our chances that Michigan made the playoffs this year after that drubbing of OSU. This is a nice pick up. I'm excited to see what he can do with our line.

The holidays are coming and I am going to try my best to be positive and sign up for we don’t know what we have.

Have you ever seen him? He will be playing on Sundays. He looks like an All American.

Other than we do know that UConn lost their best player you mean.

I am not sure that I buy the total incompetence assessment. I suspect there is more to it than that.

I disagree. Our best player is a MLB and he is coming back next season. And he is a Spanos recruit.

Perhaps the most potential, but he has a ways to go. Best players are the ones who go into the NFL. He's not there yet. TJ is.

I think earlier in the thread someone mentioned that a freedom of information request was filed to see what the assistant coach salary pool ended up being. Will be interested to see if Dave B significantly increased it or was full of it.

UConn had 3 choices when hiring assistant coaches:

1) Pay up for highly successful P5 coaches.

2) Pay above average for journeymen experienced coaches who don’t have much upside.

3) Hire up and coming young coaches that have big upsides. Generally, you don’t have to pay above average salaries.

In general, UConn went with the 3rd strategy so I wouldn’t expect to see a big increase in the assistant coach salary pool.

I think we went with Option 4. Combine Option 3 with a seemingly larger commitment to an expanded staff to help with overall program (GM, player development, etc.). Regardless, I can’t wait to see the energy the staff shows play out on the field.

I raised that point when HCJM was hired. Jury is still out.

I agree that Jones was our best defensive player this year, but your statement is absurd. Neither Tim Boyle nor Tyler Davis were our best offensive players when they were here. Bama Wilson wasn't not our best defensive player here because a bunch of guys made it in the NFL and he didn't.

The fact that you have the size and speed to play in the NFL, and continue to develop while in college, does not make you the best player on the team while you were in college.

Think that is what I was saying. The topic was the UConn D. Were you disagreeing with me or ZooCougar?

What wasn't clear. You said more than one thing. I fully agree that Travis Jones was our best defensive player last year. I think your statement, however, that the best player is the one who goes to the NFL is flat out wrong. Your best player may or may not be the one with the best pro prospects.

Thank you for posting the quick reply. I edited my post as follows but the edit window is very short and it expired. This is what I was trying to post:

On the chance that this was about my post, what you say is true, that there are players who were not the best in college who later developed in the NFL. That is not applicable or the issue here. Look at the contrapositve of your statement, (or whatever the appropriate logical term is). There are very very few players who are ready for the NFL when NO one else on their team is -- who are not the best player on their team, on their side of the ball.

Yes, you cannot coach size or athleticism, and that is one reason why the NFL take flyers on players that are not yet quite ready to play in the NFL. And they then develop them. But if no one else on that team is ready for the NFL, almost by definition they are the college team's best on that side of the ball.

Seems like Mora went splashy with the most important hire and went up and coming/ value with the rest. Fine with me.

I see Charlton ... then Sammis, Hilliard, Diabite, Marinelli, Barthel, MacClendon - they are all in the same theme in their ambitious career: upward bound, well-regarded, skilled specific to positions. A well combined grouping of guys who entered coaching around 2013-2014 and are climbing. A few guys with grey beyond. All are eager to go get recruiting (don't know about KM).

Contrast that with the HCRE 6. Not being dismissive. It is a fact that - through networking who knows how - Mora didn't stay in a comfort zone of known. He searched for a typology.
