Defense takes 11 guys. If a lineman is consistently getting in the backfield, creating pressure, sacks and tackles for loss, beating his blocks, double teams, getting off his blocks to make tackles he's good. No one stat can cover all that.

A linebacker leading the team in tackles may or may not mean he's good but it suggests he can read the play and cover ground or it can mean his line is eating up blocks leaving him free to make a tackle. But, if that tackle is being made 6 yards down field it might not be so good.

For a DB the best stat is number of targets. Deion Sanders was so good people stopped challenging him, so what do passes defended or interceptions even mean. Tackles for a S or CB is meaningless. In our worst years those guys led the team in tackles because teams were ripping of 10 yds a play. Still are essentially, if not every play. Hence an LB leading tackler.

They only real way to evaluate defense is on film.

I am pleased to see the expanded staff directory on the uconnhuskies.com website

Love seeing Carrazola and then Roundtree step into Analyst roles (Defense & Special Teams). Cobb & Castellitito (no idea on bios( have been there awhile. Our strength & conditioning staff has 4 names and Matt King remains ... so that's a good continuation from what we heard was a good thing.

As for administration, Preston Pehrson is very important. *Pehrson obviously has a wife & youngsters in TX and no home yet in NE; so he is Xmas in West Texas.

When you are in that kind of role at Texas Tech, you just have a database and network that we would never run into. WE need Juco and the transfer portal relationships in the southwest. Then mystery. What the heck is an Executive Director Pat Collins? How are they segregating that? Congrats to Zyskowski and Harris for hanging over.

I have watched a lot of tape now on Jones for the draft, especially the Clemson game... my god he was a beast. I heard all the hype and just figured he was a good player and all... but on the tape, he's occupying two players every play. I had no idea. You rarely heard his named called by broadcasters because he was double, sometimes triple teamed. I'm worried for next year for the defense (which I think we much better than their scores showed, just because they were always on the field) trying to replace Jones.
I couldn't agree with you more!!! Travis will be very hard to replace.

Demetrice Martin just got a big contract to shift west to Oregon as Secondary and Pass Game Coordinator. He was with Mora 2012 to 2017. Then Arizona then Colorado. He is now 48 (played CB at Michigan State from his home in LA).

Previous to Mora, he had been HS and Cali community college and one year at Washington. My comfort level is the capacity to WANT young coaching energy. To take a guy with no significant experience/high level experience. Eyeball him. And give him the power to shape a key component of your Team. Mora has 7 now in process: Hilliard, Diabite, MacClendon, Sammis, Marinelli, Barthel and Charlton. Charlton is obviously an outlier. But these are the up&coming. Someone laid out alternatives of hiring. It is now clear what this guy HCJM is comfortable doing. In key positions.

He made his bet

Preston Pehrson is a lot younger than I thought he'd be. Didn't he play with Staubach?

Imagine if his parents purposely named after the Cowboys RB - who's last name was spelled more conventionally

Sounds like he snaps the whip on all the off field stuff.

Someone should do a comparison of the number of off field positions rather than the total budget of the on field coaches' salaries. Sound like a significant expansion. Typical, the new guy gets all the tools necessary to succeed. The way of the world. Not complaining though. The failure of the predecessor informed decisions made on behalf of the successor.

Or maybe, Mora set conditions for taking the job, and sacrificed some salary in order to get a better infrastructure in place to give himself a better chance at success. I'm just spitballin, but he and DB spent a lot of time in Idaho together.

We will agree to disagree because I am not going to disparage Mitchell.

Just one question - would your position be that whatever linebacker in the nation has the most tackles is the best linebacker?
I think both of you are wrong on Mitchell vs Travis. Our best defensive player in my mind has been Kevon Jones, with Travis and Mitchell close behind. KJ has both size, strength AND speed for a big defensive player.

Doug Shearer, Connecticut '13, come on down you're purportedly the next participant in the HCJM hiring spree.
Arguably, off all our previous coaching positions under Edsall 2.0, he's got some shoes to fill considering the coaching job Eddie Allen did with our ST during his tenure here... Was probably the best part of our team (most watchable portion of it)

I made this point a month ago

Let me give you the contra logic. Excepting Spanos, we now have a staff identity: with Shearer there will be EIGHT young rising assistant coaches with solid experience in their positional area (maybe not Marinelli). That is by design. Sad to say ... you gain by a clean sweep. Then a cultural refresher. 8 coaches who all started around 2013-2014 and progressing. Plus Pehrson.
