Jayden Ross

This is very accurate. Once again I'll bring in the fact that there were bushels of posts in the 1st natty year asking to stick A Jax on the bench....in February!!!!
Rightfully so the team was in a free fall losing 4 of 6 or whatever and he was a liability on O, then the staff revamped the gamelan around him and that’s all she wrote

Outside of being similar sized wings with defensive flexibility, this is a pretty awful comp. Their offensive games are wildly different. Ross’ offense hinges on him having turned himself into a pretty good 3-point shooter that can make teams pay when they help off of him. Meanwhile Andre played plenty of point for us and functioned as a secondary ball handler and was a much better passer. Credit where credit is due, Ross has improved his D a lot, but he has a long way to go before it’s at Jackson’s level.

Yeah it’s overall a bad comp, player-wise. They play nothing alike other than bringing energy.

It doesnt mean he was as good as both guys combined. kromah was an average G that didn’t do anything in particular really well and Facey was an average forward that didn’t do anything in particular really well. Ross is somewhere in between in terms of skillset and size. All 3 are 20 mpg off the bench guys.
Kromah, if needed, could get his own shot off the dribble. And understood offensive basketball. He didn’t need to generate offense at UConn’s level, but he could. Ross is an athlete who is playing much better D, but his offense will never be anything other than converting when the offense sets him up for something.

Our best team consists of Ross as a true athletic stopper- the best one we have
I think Hurley has made the same comp
Ross is perfect in his current role. He is no Andre Jackson, Jr. and while people like you can claim we went on a run w Ross on the floor, I’d argue the more expected return was when he got trapped in the corner , turned the ball over and gave Florida a chance to tie it late. He has improved tremendously from last season, deserves a role, part he is far from being our top 5.

He’s the guy who should guard the opposing pg 20 min a game— will throw off opposing team’s offense with his length

Sorry but he’s not that close. Andre was a stopper, glue guy. And if Andre could shoot like Ross wow, he may be an NBA all star.

He’s not a good enough defender for 20 minutes for me I know others see something, but he’s a solid 10-15 minute bench piece and if Mullins is not in foul trouble he’s closer to 10.

.-.
Jayden’s made a nice jump to become our defensive stopper but let’s not get crazy. AJax is one of our best athletes and playmakers of all time to go along with the elite defense.

Sorry but there is no comparison here at all. Jackson was one of the most gifted athletes to ever play at UConn. I never could get over the fact that he had a nonexistent jump shot but boy that elite athleticism made it so he had to be on the court.

The funny thing is that saying Ross isn't as good as Ajax is not an insult to Ross. Like some have pointed out, Ajax was a rookie starter in the NBA without a jumper.
Ross is still a pup and capable of improving more. There still could be another jump next year and progress made before this year is out. From everything I here, the kid is smart, very coachable and has a solid work ethic. I think when he does leave, he will be sorely missed, but even then may not be near or at the same level as AJax. Again, it doesn't mean that Ross won't be a very effective and important piece on a very good team. He already is that.

There was also a moment when in the right corner, he passed late in the shot clock to Malachi right in front of him on the baseline 10 feet from the hoop. That left Smith with no choices but a low percentage 10 foot push shot or going to the hoop and getting rejected. (He chose the latter.) Players with better instincts would have just thrown the ball back outside and let someone else make a play.

This. So many people just judge the shot and the results and not the reason behind them. One of the things that kills me is when people pass to a player that sets them up to get a charging call. Another is when a player realizes the clock is winding down and kicks to someone who has no reasonable opportunity to make a shot. Incredibly frustrating.

I sometimes think that the complexity of the Hurley offense lends itself to players making bad decisions early in the season. I suspect that while they are internalizing the scheme, they are too focused on making the next pass rather than making the right play. The good news is by late January/February, Hurley teams tend not to make these kinds of mistakes.

This is not a good take. Ross is nowhere near Freshman Andre Jackson.

IQ, athleticism, defensive prowess, offensive ability, and rebounding are all many levels below Ajax even on his off days.

Ross is still analytically the worst rated defender we’ve had since like 2022 so I am not sure of the praise for him on that end. For every time he gets a block, he gets beat 2x.

I’d love to see his opponent FG% and compare it to the analytics.

Evan Miya has him rated as our fourth best defender and best guard/wing after Silas. Basically grades out as a good but not great defender, which aligns with the eye test to me. I think his defensive value plays up a bit because of his length and athleticism. He can D up some guys that our smaller guards struggle with.

Ross = combo of Lasan Kromah and Kentan Facey. A 3&D wing (emphasis on the D) thats not a great ball handler, passer, rebounder, finisher, or shooter.

Jordan Walsh?
Are you comparing him to the Jordan Walsh as of now or Walsh during his one year at Arkansas? Walsh is currently shooting 48% from 3 and coming into his own in year 3 in the league, he's also only a couple of months older than Ross.

Evan Miya is a big nerd with nice Bayesian data models, but his offense and defense grading are not the be-all-end-all of defensive assessments. This goes for everyone in CBB, not just Ross.

Look at how those numbers get computed at some point.

Also, when an inbounder passes the ball to a player in the coffin corner with a clear double team on its way. They should get credit for half of the ensuing turnover.

It should be by thirds. The inbounder, the receiver and our other players who couldn’t get free. I guess it could be fourths if the refs let opposing players hold our players.
