Jayden Ross Returning!!!

Ross got 4.4 minutes as a freshman and 11.4 this past season. I don't think he's returning to just be a practice player.
I agree with you. Ross should get around 15 minutes a game if he can vastly improve his shooting ,ball handling and defensive positioning. He’s very quick but is almost always out of position defensively which hurts.

I’m so confused what we’re supposed to be looking at.
Ross has a ton of talent, but one major obstacle he has to overcome. The game simply looked too fast for him. His mind seemed to race when the competition and physicality upped a notch, i.e.BE and high major competition. He hit some nice rhythm 3s and other shots, and even some nice passes during the lessor competition games, but made too many mistakes once the game sped up. He too often tried to make the big defensive play but not get there and find himself out of position. His instincts were often good, but he'd be a tad late taking far too much risk. Similar with some passes where defenders are just quicker than he realizes.

He should watch some tape of Jaylen Brown of the Celtics as to how to slow down his game a bit and not try to play at breakneck speed. If he can learn to do that and improve his handle a bit, he can be an outstanding player.

I've said this before, he's got a Reggie Lewis way about him, but he just hasn't learned to control his nerves where the game slows down for him. Teams sense this and would attack him. Hopefully Hurley can coach this part of his game up. He's got great length, quickness, a nice 3pt shot and long strides to get into the paint. The staff keeps saying they see a special level of play in practice, which I don't doubt. This points to a player who's struggling to handle real game pressure. Let's see what a 3rd year in the system can do. If he wants to see more of the floor, he simply has to produce, making plays on both ends of the floor and less mistakes. The coaching staff wanted him to return and so did he. It's time where what he does in practice to translate to games. It's that simple. The talent's there, the production needs to follow.

Where did you buy your rose colored glasses? His penchant for 0s across the stat board was epic.
There're some production numbers posted. Just give him another chance, it could take 2 years to 'get it'.

He will contribute and produce next season, not BE All Team numbers but some better bench numbers.

I agree with this.
It is shortsighted to count Ross out.

The staff and Ross clearly had conversations this offseason. Either they agree with the BY and think Ross is a low minute guy with little potential, and they told him as much..... but he's still coming back.

Or... they lied to him, doubled down on their "fake belief" in him, fed him BS about his future only to relegate him to the bench and lose an open roster spot that is still costing the school money.

If I were to believe either of the 2 above scenarios it would suggest that I have questions surrounding the best staff in the country. I don't

Great analysis.

The one X factor that no one talks about is that last year we didn’t have a point guard. With Dirrah playing hurt and Mahaney taking 80% of the season to get comfortable, it left our team very much in funk

If the ball isn’t coming up the court with a point guard effectively running the offense it does leave everyone else kind of on their own and we say a lot of this - this season. Watching Liam as a ball handler was painful, Solo too.

That is not the case this year.

So their are some freshman that looked like they had a subpar season that if Silas comes in as advertised, might look a whole lot better this Fall.

Our players should be able to play their positions - we’ll see!

I’m bullish on Ross next year. Besides having an amazing approach and attitude all year despite not having the year everyone expected for him, Hurley said he was playing like a first round pick in practice. I know we’ve heard unfulfilled proclamations for players before but actually playing like a first rounder in practice is fairly different than “wall potential”. Also I think it was fairly telling how Hurley made it very clear how excited he was that Ross was returning.

I certainly hope he does the work to improve this summer but I’m not counting on any great “jump” out of anyone at this point. Would rather be pleasantly surprised than thoroughly disappointed... again.

I feel like Ross is an Andre type in the sense that if he can just focus on what he can be great at (defense, run fast breaks, energy plays), then it will ignite his confidence and make him a serviceable rotation player

He’ll always he playing with 2 of Silas/Solo/Malachi/Braylon in the backcourt. Let them handle running offense, do your basic part, then shine on the other end of the court

His minutes and impact next year will be directly tied to how many silly mistakes he makes because his body is moving faster than his mind. It’s the difference between great bench piece and benchwarmer. Controlling this has been a key development skill for a lot of players over this title span - Hawkins, Andre, Diarra, even Solo come to mind

Geez, not asking too much - what else is there to too when out on the court but to make sure you dont trip over the mid court line? :);):p:cool:

I have the utmost respect for him staying and wanting to be a Husky so in all reality how can you not root for the kid. Just needs to slow down in his game and let it come to him. He’s certainly athletic enough and seems to have some skills but the biggest improvement required is to relax and gain confidence. Neither an easy ask but I’m hoping.

I suspect it will boil down to Furphy vs Ross for those last 5-15 wing minutes. While they aren't similar plays, the wing is PACKED when you consider Solo and AK are going to command 25-30 a piece.

I can't see a world where Mullins and Stewart aren't getting a lot of wing minutes. And I don't think we're going 10-deep or playing guys a max or 20 minutes or something. Players always separate themselves in practice.

PG: Demary (25), Smith (15)
SG: Solo (25), Demary (5), Mullins (10)
SF: Stewart (15), Mullins (15), Ross/Furphy (10)
PF: AK (30), Stewart (10)
C: Reed (25), Reibe or a transfer (15)

Same. There's a reason why Auburn was good with multiple 5th year and 4th year guys on the team. Experience really does matter. Ross probably needs to get physically stronger but he should get better as he plays more, understands what is going on and how to respond and take advantage. I still feel like he was very much trying too hard to make an impression in short minutes. Too much gambling on D, not playing within the offense. He should be more comfortable this year, and losing Adams frees up some minutes.

What do you expect him to contribute? After 2 seasons, I'm still trying to figure out what his strengths are. Please educate me.
A few points, rebounds, steals and some assists. He's capable of each.

Not every player grows the same pace, but as a Champion and playing with many current pro-players daily he has an idea of what's needed, and he has D1/BE experience.

He's an asset not a liability.

He can and will contribute, why is there an argument?

The team last year just didn’t have the composition to be a top contender. The weren’t fast, strong or athletic enough. So, brining back a guy that should have the athleticism but sachets about and disappears on the floor doesn’t sound like a winning move to me. We need guys with motors, length, strength and a game.

Perhaps all these zeros clouded my judgement.

I trust your bball IQ. I am clearly on the "bigger role for Ross" side. Dan Hurley has made it somewhat clear that he sees Ross as a defensive stopper. He definitely has the athleticism. If this part of his game comes around as the staff expects, given how valuable wing defenders have been for this program, do you think they'll keep him at 10min/game if he ends being the guy we put on the opponent's best scorer? (Also, it seems as if the staff let's him shoot 3s with some confidence when he's in)

I'm not going to tell you you're wrong--no one really knows, including the staff TBH. Until the new guys show up on campus and the returners do (or don't) show improvement in their workouts, it's tough to predict. Even then, until games happen, you could always have a Mahaney situation where they choke under the lights.

It's easy to say Solo, Demary, Reed, and AK are going to command 25-30 minutes a game. Past that, there are a few guys you can likely pencil in. Past that? Predicting your 9th man's minutes is going to be tough to do. How many of us had Nowell, Abraham, or Singare in our lineups this time last year?

I'm just a guy who really believes in the Euro (or, well Australian) basketball system and will give those kids the nod more often than not.

It is always possible that the staff are wrong in their assessment. The staff is great, not infallible (I won't recap the recent misses other pointing out that the misses include Ross making a sophomore leap).

I know you weren't speaking to me but can you please address why the staff wants him back and why he wants to be back? That is as relevant a consideration as these stats.
The coaching staff clearly wanted him back. I just don't see him getting significant minutes with Stewart, Ball, and Mullins all being more skilled and very likely more productive. Add Furphy to the mix and the # of minutes for Ross could get squeezed a bit more.

I hope Ross is a stud as a Junior, but that would require a tremendous leap over what we have seen from his first two seasons.

The challenge with Ross is that he has the physical attributes to be a really good perimeter defender, and yet he's actually not been good at it so far. I say the same for Solo, long arms, strong, great hops, and he just doesn't seem to get it. Both got better, but they need to make a leap to really becomes good. Solo puts the ball in the bucket, so he's playing anyway. Ross will need to defend much better, show he can make a shot, show he can pass the ball and hit the boards better than he has. I hope he does all of that.

When we play the iron I expect Demary, Solo and AK to be playing more minutes than your projections
