I'm not an expert at recruiting strategies, but just because someone like Kansas comes and offers a top target of yours does not mean you bow out.
Kansas is also recruiting Quentin Grimes and Devon Dotson for 2018 (and appear to be seriously considering KU), both of whom play the same position as Carey. Both significantly higher ranked recruits according to "name your favorite recruiting site." If both end up going to Kansas, I have a feeling Carey would not be so keen on playing 3rd guard for 4 years. Yes the ACC/PAC12 comment does not look great, but again Diallo said back in 2016 that at that moment he was coming to UConn -- things change.
My point is, as many as have already stated, recruiting is fluid and let the process play out. Let's not get strung out over an offer, a comment, or any one event.
