Injury report for tomorrows game

The player I most want back tomorrow is KK as she has more upside as a distributor of the ball than Chen. Having KK back will allow Chen to be a scorer first (I find her career Assist to Turnover ratio rather pedestrIan- 1.56 316 assists to 202 to’s). Plus KK is quicker and a better 3 pt shooter.

I hate to disagree with my esteemed colleague but “a tough USF team”? The only real interesting thing about this years edition is the fact Jose has upped his Euro Diversity to Bulgaria, Spain, Italy, Ivory Coast, Finland, France, Congo, Israel and Latvia. This team was not close to a NCAA bid last year and the quality of Jose’s Euro players has diminished as other more noted achools are now recruiting in Europe. This is not a team to really worry about.
By “tough” I mean that Jose’s teams always come to play. The last time UConn faced the Bulls was in 2021 in the Bahamas. The game was tied after 3 quarters with the Huskies eventually pulling out a tough 60-53 win. That USF team was fair at best, finishing 24-9.

I’ll grant you that USF is not at the level they once were. But I don’t believe UConn will roll over them, at least not for a half or so.

Pretty sure she'll be back. My understanding is she thought she was playing Sunday.

In watching the reply, I saw her and Azzi wearing the shorts on the bench which indicated to me that they participated in the warm-ups. I will be there early tomorrow night so I will see for myself and with seats right behind the bench, maybe I can get some intel....

I can confirm from in-person observation that both Azzi and KK were dressed to play in Sunday's game, and that they did both participate in the warm-ups.

Agreed KK is quicker. 3pt % same, FG%, 49 for Chen, 46 for KK. Let's just sit back and let the games decide.

And right on cue, someone comes in without knowing the actual facts or distorting them.

4th year Chen shot 32.8% from 3 point arc (22/67) last year, KK was 33% (30/91). Chen's career is a paltry 51/174 or 29.3%. Chen had all of 38 steals last year against mid-major quality players while KK had 90. Chen's career assists to turnovers is 316/202 or 1.564 (again, against mid-major players) while KK had a 123-76 or 1.618 ratio. Did Chen drive more to the basket than KK as the #1 option on her team? Yes she did. BTW Sophomore Chen shot 43.4% while Freshman KK shot 45.9%

You tell me who has more upside-Chen or KK? Given what I saw in the scrimmage and the comments about Chen's penchant for throwing the ball around in practice, give me KK every day and twice on Sunday. Against D2 Fort Hays, Chen had 5 assists and 3 really bad turnovers. That won't cut it against UNC, Ole Miss, ND, Louisville, SoCal, SC and Tenn.

Ease up there... I thought we were comparing 5th year Chen with 2nd year KK and we really have nothing to go this year except conjecture since KK hasn't played yet. Let's talk again after the BU game.

In terms of efficiency as a scorer Chen was also pedestrian. In terms of efficiency as a scorer right now I'd rather have Paige, Azzi and Sarah set up to score. Therefore I wouldnt want Kaitlyn to think "score first" like she has in the past. Its crucial she work to get better setting players up rather than think score first because her team is built around a combo of super players and/also super shooters. And I can't find the link but I believe Geno also spoke about how he would like Kaitlyn to become more of a passer.

Wait a minute, talk about distorting. You're putting TN in with those teams? Maybe in a TN fan's dream world.

I’ve watched a lot of Kaitlyn Chen. She is absolutely at her best in crunch time, when her team needed her most. I would also point out that she is a relentless defender, capable of blanketing opposing guards.

I love the quotes and appreciate you posting the twitter feed, but after hearing Geno's recent comments to the tune of "Jana is one of the most skilled players ever... blah blah", I'm going go take his glowing reports with a grain of salt at this time. ;)

Geno sees potential , so he tends to have a very optimistic view of what players couid do. And I think this optimism is highest at the start because the slate is basically blank.

He also had said Heather Buck could become one of the all-time greats.

Geno expects both KK and Morgan to play tomorrow. Azzi & Ayanna are close. Aubrey & Caroline?

Geno also called Morgan a “difference maker” when she’s on the court. I’ve only seen her HS highlights. She appears to be an excellent passer with the ability to score inside and outside.

Why I said she will be 4th (or maybe lower):

Better than Paige or Azzi ? IMO no shot.

And probably not better than Sarah whom I expect to be hovering near All-American level. And especially after hearing Geno's postgame how he singled out the Paige and Sarah connection in which he stated those 2 gives him a comfort because they can always get a good shot. Plus Sarah is going to get inside baskets too. Her efficiency will be better as a 3rd option.

Plus unfortunately I don't have the link - so I can understand those that won't believe me - but in one of his recent videos he said Kaitlyn needs to work on passing the ball more (i.e.e change her style a bit - not a lot but a bit) . I'm not saying she stinks or is average. It’s just that the 3 aforementioned are better. So, you don't want Kaitlyn to focus on taking shots away from the above 3.

Don’t underestimate Tennessee and their new coach/style of play. Obviously, they’ve got some work ahead of them before they rejoin the “elite” group but I’d advise people not to sleep on them! I’ve read several write-ups on their new coach and imo, they’ve found someone who will restore Tennessee back to, if not the very top, at least to a contender! I do not think it will be long (perhaps even this year) until Thompson-Boling Arena is once again a graveyard for visiting teams!
She (Kim Caldwell) seems to be a brash, uber-confident, driven, personality, with her own vision of how to win basketball games! Remind you of anyone? I think she will surprise some teams / people this year! If she can ramp her recruiting back up to more traditional Tennessee levels and start getting a better grade of recruit, she will make Tennessee a real problem again! I think she is the real deal!

If there’s anything we’ve learned over the past few seasons it’s that you can never have enough depth. Mark my word. Kaitlyn will come up big for the Huskies this season.

Yes I agree!!! But my point wasn't that she won't be on ocassion 1st 2nd or 3rd in scoring etc. And won't be the hero in a game or games. My disagrrmeent was with ther poster that said, "Having KK back will allow Chen to be a scorer first." Overall imo we don't want her to be a scorer "1st." An occassional game, sure.

Remember when talking about Azzi's return when Paige was due to return from her ACL injury the Doctor's wanted her to wait 12 to 13 months after the surgery to come back full speed!
Paige didn't play on the European trip at all!
She was cleared a week or two before the first game!
Azzi may be faced with the same instructions!

As Morgan Cheli is getting set for her debut IMHO the more rest/healing a groin injury can get the better!
Once you start getting pulled groins and/or hamstrings the more they reappear!
Knowing UConn's training staff they've been building up her leg strength to avoid future injuries!

Geno has been absolutely glowing in his praise of her. I thought she would just act as a backup to Sarah at the four, but he obviously sees her role as much wider than that. It should be fascinating to watch how he uses her.

.-.
After the role Paige was forced to play last year at the 4, Geno could see an opportunity to work on the concept a bit more with Cheli who is bigger but of course not Paige.... but still intriguing to have a big PG at the 4 doing point forward things for periods of time.

She's a beautiful fit with Sarah. You could have Sarah play offense like a wing at one end while Morgan can play the high post. And at the other end Morgan defends the quicker SF,

Sarah is so perfect for this team. Anybody fits with her, Just like Paige.

Excited to see Morgan play. She can do a lot, from her skilled passing, pull-up, and going to the hoop. Plus, her personality is almost like KKs, helping to ignite the team like Nika. Boy are we going to miss Nika, so hoping that Morgan, KK, and Jana can bring the fire that this team thrived on last year. With all our talent, we still need someone to keep our enthusiasm up each possession, as talent alone will not get us to where we want to go. I will be at the game Thursday, so I hope the fans will go nuts on this team and just cheer their minds out. Go Huskies.

Funny to have a poster with the name of "Defense" not mention KK's skills as our best defensive guard.;).

This may turn out to be a prescient post. You’ve hit on a good way to think about Morgan’s paradoxical skillset. She was a tremendous PG in high school and even (Paige-like) a player-coach on the court and on the bench. There are a few clips of her HS games where she uses a clipboard on the sideline to explain plays to a teammate.

Morgan may not be the regular PG at UConn and will probably play forward much of the time. But her handles are too good to limit her role to that. She also has elite passing skills that Geno is not likely to lock up on the wing. We may not see much of it this season, but in the coming years I bet we’ll see her passing from the high post often.

On a side note, it’s surprising to me how unlike Morgan is to Caroline. They are a similar size, but Caroline is a more polished perimeter shooter, a crafty shot blocker and a skillful low post scorer. Morgan is a bit (maybe a lot) quicker, has better handles and is really scrappy in the paint as a rebounder and a defender (judging from high school). She also knows how to be a vocal leader. I really hope the two of them get some major minutes on the court together.

I can hardly wait to see Morgan in the starting lineup. Even if it doesn’t happen this season, it will eventually. May her nagging injuries be a thing of the past!

We are what we are. Proceed with caution when bringing kids back. We cant afford any more setbacks. If the kids think theyre ready they may be ready however take it easy is my message. Its a long season and we dont want any more tweeks. The fact that someone posted Morgan and KK are ready for tonite is great news. We are still a team that is a work in process only because we have so many underclassman. As good as Chen has shown she is she still is learning UConns system. Development takes time. Recovering from injury takes time. You may be ready to play but may not be ready to overdue it/full throttle. At UNC may be tuff but I think we win that game. Hey its early in the season and there will be hiccups as we move forward. Look forward to our progress and understand we are still learning.
