Hurley Suspension?

Hurley clearly should not have made contact, but maybe if the Big East actually reprimanded refs for inconsistency or bad calls on occasion Hurley wouldn't fly off the handle as much.

Some bad calls at the end including Smart coming onto the floor during the game and pushing his player. I believe Hurley was whistled for the same thing in the championship game against Purdue. It's a pretty easy call and I can't see how 1 of 3 refs on the floor couldn't see it. Then the no call on the Demary drive where it was called a tie up when the defender clearly had his arms around Silas's arms.

As some have pointed out, Gaffney has been critical of Hurley. Don't seem like he can separate his dislike for Hurley on the court and I don't get why the Big East lets him do a single UConn game.
It's almost St. Patrick's Day. The Irish should stick together.

“ Nobody’s making 3’s SO STOP SHOOTING THEM. Give Reed the ball and let him do his thing. He had 10 points in the first half on 5 of 7 or something like that. He only took 3/4 shots in the second half for 4 points. He duplicates his first half and we win going away ( and their center gold fouls out). They had nobody that could guard Reed. But the coaching staff decided to let Mullins shoot 13 3’s and make 1.
Sorry, you don't stop good shooters from shooting just because they have not been making them so far

There was actually a play later in the game where Mullins had the ball on the three-point line, wide open, but he had been bricking things up, so he passed it to someone else, the shot clock ran low, and then he ended up taking a much tougher, contested 3 anyway...

I'm of the belief that even if he's 0/10, if he's literally standing alone, then he should just shoot it.

Hopefully the BE gives Gaffney the rest of the year off (and next year and the year after). With all of the BE tournament games he will be out there I’m sure, but it would be in the best interest of the league to keep him from doing another UConn game this year. The guy is a total clown and routinely misses calls that happen right in front of him. Hopefully Dave B has already made some phone calls. UConn pretty much is the Big East at this point. Pitino may have 3-4 years left in his tank (max) and then St. John’s is back to being a nobody. Nova has history, but not sure they’re going to be hanging any more NCAA banners anytime soon with Willard who is a good but not great coach.

I’m personally done with the BE using our out of conference strength of schedule to try to boost these other garbage programs. Time for a change or a different league if the officiating doesn’t improve

The calling of fouls this whole season in the Big East has been inconsistent, to say the least. I think that is what frustrates Coach Hurley and some of us as well. What Hurley did was wrong, but at that time the game was over.

.-.
If someone is a good shooter, you never stop them from shooting because of however many they've missed. Because you have no idea when they'll start hitting again
Not true. There is such a thing as riding a hot 70% hand vs a 13% stone cold one and living another day. Another one of our issues is that we don’t separate the quality of the shot and volume especially on 25+ foot threes.

Get the damn ball to Tarris Reed. If he doesn't have things designed to get the ball to him in the paint and the players can't execute getting him the ball in the paint it's on the coach. If you jack up dumb shots instead of getting it to him in the paint you sit.
The problem is Luke’s equal opportunity Euro offense isn’t designed to do that. It is based on motion and indiscriminate ball movement. When everyone is hitting shots it works great but when we have one hot post hand and a frigid freeze with everyone else it fails us.
It is not design to let a guy get post position and get him the ball because you have a 70% chance of success, instead we continue the 13% with him having to set screens 20 feet away from the basket.
Calhoun would often have our post guy set screens down on the blocks and have guys coming from the corner or weak side run off it. That way he doesn’t need to recreate the wheel to get post position.

The team has three goals this year. Winning the Big East, winning the Big East tournament, and winning a national championship. A team of that caliber shouldn't be totally dependent on the three where they live and die by it.

Hurley just spent two postgame press conferences basically saying Reed's play can still carry the team to their three goals and he needs to be a beast. Well he was a beast today when we were feeding him the first 21 minutes of the game. I didn't see anything designed for him after that.

Why did the play of this team peak in late November/early December? Why have we only really seen that again in one game against St. John's? Why have we played our two worst games of the season in late February/early March?
Fair questions.

I think saying that we stopped looking for Tarris is ingenuous. We couldn't feed the post. They pressured us above the 3-point line and we weren't able to run an effective pick and roll with all of their length and deflections. Really, only Silas and maybe AK are reliable post feeders, and AK decided to go on vacation today. Stewie is OK at it, too.
Reed took 2 shots the entire second half.

Although Dan is a great leader / recruiter and coach - Do we really think refs in general would speak highly of him. Gaffney is not the only one that is critical.
Every great leader have room for growth which does not exclude Danny —.

.-.
I am fine with the no call on Silas.

That’s not why Hurley got teched up. He got the T for the effort his team has given down the stretch here. Think about all the comments recently on their effort and the urgency needed to get to that next level.

Handwringing on whether it was or wasn’t a foul is a waste of bandwidth.
Part of effort, in my view, is having the discipline to play smart. Saturday we failed that metric not getting Reed the ball more the second half. Sad to say but we need to adjust to the inconsistency in which our games are called or get out of the conference. The Big East will lose tens of millions in their next TV contracts.

To be fair, a number of them never happened because Marquette fouled before a pass to Tarris could occur. A few of them we blundered/had a TO. A few he was open and we missed him. And one he could have made it happen but didn't use his size advantage to make him self available for an entry pass.

And in a bunch of the sets, he set highly effective screens to give wide-open looks to 38%+ 3pt shooters who missed their shots.

We just did not execute on offense yesterday. But it wasn't because we ignored and abandoned Tarris.
We couldn’t get the ball to the biggest, strongest guy on the court for almost an entire half? lol

Good point. We’re built around three-point shooting, but when multiple guys are cold from deep, it’s time to attack inside the arc and knock down some twos to get the offense going.

So let me see if I read this correctly: Coach gets a T then a second T for contact with an official and is thrown out of the game. OK so far?
Then the league investigates and none of the officials can tell the league that there was contact!
That’s Val Ackerman’s organization!

.-.
Is puffing out your chest and running at someone really incidental contact?

The rule is ANY contact anyways. And should be.
But the ref reportedly said there was no contact? So why the double technical then?

That’s Val Ackerman’s organization!
Val is in over her head as commissioner and is tanking the league year over year. They need an adult in that position. Shit always flows downhill that’s why we are having this yearly conversation with referees, scheduling, no promotional activities for the conference, no marketing for our teams, all of it.

She has no clue how to run an effective organization and scale it. She is here to approve time and keep the lights on.

@Leebo on that one when he was wide open, he just made his previous and only one he made. This was a must shoot, couldn’t believe he passed that one up!

Regardless of whether he actually touched or simply bumped the referee, Hurley has to be better than that. I love his passion and fire, and overall I think he has done a much better job managing it this season. However, in that situation he absolutely deserved to be ejected.

Exactly.

And how would an even mediocrely-coached team react on defense to that change in offensive strategy???

If it became clear that a team was giving up on taking 3's because it was an "off night", the D would then pack the paint and render the interior offense essentially useless.

The takes on this board sometimes...
