Never said he could not coach and recruit - I find it not enjoyable watching him yelling at refs all game. My feelings that others may or may not share.
Should watch some John wooden documentaries. I met him many times and he he a great guy off the court. It is not healthy for him and I fear he may have a break down at some point.

Who did Marquette have a tough time stopping? Maybe run some stuff to get Rees the ball a helluva lot more? Maybe give more space to James so he can’t penetrate and make everyone scramble on D, and find open people?

That’s part of coaching as well. It’s certainly not all on him but let’s not leave him out of this fiasco.

It’s actually a very understandable mistake to make, because despite all the revisionist history on the Boneyard - just like Demary, Newton spent more time during Big East games being body slammed to the floor on drives to the hoop than he spent at the free throw line.

We attempted 3s right at our season average, which is 159th in D1. We aren’t over-reliant on 3s in the contemporary game, and Marquette didn’t dictate anything. If we don’t have an aberration of a bad shooting night, we win. This is high variance game played by college kids. Just about every top team has had a bad loss or two this year. We don’t have 4 NBA players on this roster. A couple WTF losses and several non-dominant wins were going to happen. We are 27–4 and nationally ranked. Four losses all season that’s elite. Yes, the latest loss was to Marquette a game we should’ve had but one slip doesn’t erase an entire season of high-level basketball.
We’re still a favorite in the BE Tournament and a legitimate Final Four contender in the NCAAs. If you’re saying this team is “no good,” you’re missing the big picture.
Support the team. March is what counts.

Being in the game chat has become an eye opener and not in a good way. Constant negativity, nonstop player and coach bashing, and meltdown posts every possession isn’t support, it’s noise. Frustration is normal, but turning it into attacks just drags everyone down and does nothing for the team.

Not everyone sees that moment as an embarrassment. Hurley was standing up for his players and refusing to let a crucial no call slide. That wasn’t losing control that was a coach fighting for his team when the stakes were high. His guys see that passion. They know he’s in the trenches with them, willing to take the heat to make a point. That kind of fire builds trust and unity, especially heading into the games that matter most.

It’s not a foul ever. Gold went straight up and his hand came down after the play, not even sure if it had any contact anyway, but you’re never getting a call there. Good drive and take by Silas but just didn’t go in. Nothing you can do, Dan severely overreacted.

I already said it in another post but I’ll say it again:

This was the 31st game of the season. The players are well-paid professionals who should have knowledge of our offensive sets by now and all theoretically have a decent BBIQ.

I would be absolutely stunned if Danny, Kimani, and Luke did not mention strongly at any point during timeouts, or yelling when game action was on, to “get the ball into the post”.

If anyone was at the game behind the bench and confirm that the above happened, I’ll give you $1000.

This isn’t 5th grade church league rec ball where they should have to pause the game to have to coaches come out on the court and explain to the players how to pass the ball into the post in the spirit of teaching the game.

If you want to discuss/debate the merits of how pulling all the starters and putting in the scrubs for 3-4 minutes would have gone, I’m fine with that. It may have “taught them a lesson” and been “great coaching”, but the outcome likely would have been the same.

I think he knew enough that this was a “good” time to seriously overreact. The game was over. Getting a T was not going to impact the outcome.

It’s actually somewhat interesting as for the last ~24h, all of social media is back on the “Bad Hurley” train. The fact that Bobby also got riled up the same day is delicious.

In the same way that Pitino took all the blame for StJ getting blown out by us, this shifts a chunk of the media narrative away from the team. As stated nicely in a post above, is also a reminder that he’s all-in for this team…maybe it lights a fire.

Needed to not go away from posting up on block, and never got the ball to the foul line, which would distort the defense. x and o lack of adjustment. if the 3 pt game is struggling, go to what works.

That being said, why does our offense not run the same complex sets it did two years ago? My brother brought up a good point that yesterday it seemed more like Ollie offense than Hurley offense. Pass around the perimeter and hoist a three.

Is it a personnel issue?

Good Lord CBS Sports is obsessed. I’ve already seen like 5 different videos on Facebook about the ejection. Seemed like a no call to me so I think a lot of his reaction was frustration over the team playing like dogsht.

That wasn’t a foul on Demary’s last miss. Even if it happened earlier in the game. And in this particular game, there were plenty of questionable calls that went in our favor as well.

They played harder than us. With a regular season championship on the line, that should never have happened. But it’s not the coaches who showed up without any intensity — it’s the players,

Tortured myself and rewatched the last 15min of the 2nd half.

The tl;dr is that we ran great offense that gave Reed and Reibe many opportunities. As well a ton of great looks for our shooters.

We just didn’t execute. It wasn’t coaching malpractice.

I'm not sure this thread is the place for this comment, but I've been trying to think about how Hurley's "working the refs" is different than Calhoun's "working the refs." When Jim Calhoun went after the refs, it seemed more a criticism of the call unless a personal criticism. You might hear that "freaking bullshit", but to my knowledge, he never called anyone a "freaking clown".

Calhoun had gravitas. Yeah, he's a big man and he looked furious sometimes, but he seemed angry and not out of control. Hurley reminds me of Mick Cronin. His complaints seem more whiny than forceful, but, what I think causes so much personal animosity between the refs and him is that he attacks them personally, rather than the call. He's also less judicious. I think you need to pick your spots.

If you pay close attention, the same intricate sets, screens, ghost screens, etc, etc are still there. And generate a ton of clean looks still.

Somewhat agree but I don’t think we compare the teams in the way you’re describing.

This team doesn’t have the alpha-take over the game type guy. 2024 had several. We should definitely expect to have a minimum of one with the talent on this team.

This team has no ball handlers except Silas. 2024 had several. We should definitely expect to have at least 2 guys who can penetrate. Malachi is unplayable and that’s killed us.

Those are the only things I compare this team to 2024 with. And I think it’s fair to expect better. Doesn’t mean I expect to win it all by 10+ points each game.
