Awesome team.We own # 1 ranking. Just a matter of it being listed. I was real happy to see Baylor lose, too. Didn't want anyone to even think about challenging our 90 - 0 record. But after yesterdays game, I realize that they are going to lose to us this year anyway. In fact, in a couple of years, we might be threatening to break our own record. If that sounds cocky, good. That's how I wanted it to sound. (Hee hee.)

I just finished watching the game on DVR (and I apologise in advance for being too lazy to attend, for sitting in my easy chair and for sipping a pretty tasty Pinot) and I came away with some thoughts.

1. Stephanie Dolson is much better than I thought she would ever be. Nice to see she could get in such great shape without losing too much of her biggest ass et.
2. The team is really going to miss Faris, I don't care how well the freshman play.
3. UConn dodged a bullet with Bone. Tonight she was owned by Dolson.
4. Stokes had a great game on defense.
5. Tuck = Jones??
6. Kara Lawson is now officially a hottie. Peck is a drone.

Anybody else surprised that MJ, with plenty of playing time, took not a single outside shot [that I can recall]?

UConn dodged a bullet with Bone?????????????????? I personally think Bone is a little like Paris and that girl from Ohio State (whose name escapes me) who whenever she faced top flight teams with really active defenses was anything but special. Bone dodges a bullet whenever she goes against smaller, weaker teams that don't stress defense and aren't active defensively.

I agree. There was no bullet missed. Bone is nowhere near the player that Dolson is and Dolson will only continue to improve. Bone has tapped out.

Edited:
Just saw the subsequent posts...yeah, Bone was not nearly what she was advertised to be. However, I suspect that if she had gone to UCONN that she would be a much better player than she is today. She has improved almost none since entering college.

Did I miss something on Faris? Do you mean that the team will miss her next year?

Yes he was referring to next year. She's a senior of course. But she does so much on the court - I really paid attention to her last night during the aTm game and it's true - all the tips and disruption of plays when aTm was trying to run offense - none of that shows up on the stat sheet cuz it's not a block or a steal. It's the equivalent of a "harass" or "hurry" in pro football parlance when they are talking about a QB...

As far as I know she has no plans to leave the team before she graduates.

Just to make things clear. "Dodged a bullet" is an idiomatic expression meaning avoiding something negative. From what I have seen f Bone there would have been negatives.

This team is going to be good. However, at times yesterday, offense didn't look smooth.

I think you gotta give the A&M defense some credit. Ya know?

I thought that at times, they looked like they lack that one go to player. Thankfully Dolson dominated.

Ummm. She was on the bench, injured. I've always thought it's better to have several players who could be 'go to' depending on circumstances, anyway.

Other than KML and Dolson, their only consistent scoring is coming from three freshman. Doty and Faris are notorious for their effort and impacts, however, offensively, they don't produce gaudy numbers. That being said, they both look to be shooting better in the early season.

There's only one ball and (generally) only one player can score per possession. In other words, not everyone can be a gaudy scorer. If Doty and Faris consistently score when needed, which both are doing so far this year, they're keeping the defense honest, and you can't ask for more. If you do, then you're going to have "KML or Dolson or the three freshmen" scoring less. Who cares, so long as the team scores?

I am intrigued to watch how the freshman progress and learn the offense (looked lost at times). Also, the addition of Hartley will add the player who can create off the dribble and make big shots.

When all of the pieces come together, this team will be scary. Still some work to do.

Ha -- this team ALREADY is scary. ,,, And at Storrs, there will always be further work to do.

If that is their worst performance of the season, I am really excited for what is to come.

Williams (Raymond). imo.

Nah. Tamika didn't take 20 shots from outside 8 feet her entire career, it seemed.

Jones is closer, though Morgan's "immoveable object" routine does remind one of Tamika.

I find this POV interesting. Why does someone need to produce gaudy numbers? We're no longer dependent on one or two players to provide offense. The (arguably) most effective offensive engine ever fielded (courted?) in UConn WBB history had no player who averaged 15 points per game.

It had 4 who averaged over 14 points, one with 10 ppg and 4 more contributing significant points per minute. Generally, the high-scorer(s) for a particular game were the ones the opposing team chose as their poison for that night.

I see this team running the same way.

We shouldn't need heroes this year. Or in the near-term future.

There's also another serious offensive weapon who is going to be rejoining the team in the not all-too-distant future. How many primary scoring options does a team need?

Just what I was going to say, alexrgct: Hartley is a true "go to." But I think that Stewie and K M-J are as well....Mo will become one...And then Stef can put the ball in the basket in several ways herself.

I know it's only two games in (which makes all the angst about Doty/Faris production even sillier) but Kelly Faris is averaging 9.5 ppg and Caroline Doty 7.5 ppg. That seems really productive when you consider they are probably the 5th and 6th scoring options on the team.

The only time that Doty and Faris need to score is when the team needs them to score. Other than that any scoring from them is gravy.

I think you're on to something here. How about adding a second ball so to provide more excitement and scoring opportunity? The game must move ahead to remain relevant and fill the stands. Progress or perish.

She could have though. And Williams was much quicker and a better perimeter defender.

I like the idea of a second ball. Just put the teams out there and let them compete for the two balls so that they can get more shots.

I had a coach who used to do that in gym class. It created an interesting dynamic and a fun chaotic game and a lot of decision making about when to play offense or defense. Think about it.

There haven't been a whole lot of players with the skills and gifts Morgan has in the history of the women's game. It's going to be tough to make fair comparisons, particularly this early in her career, when she's still in the early stages of learning and developing.

On the "lack" of a "go to" player. You are the coach of the opposition with a 1 point lead 10 seconds to go. UCONN has Dolson, Stewart, Tuck, KML, and Hrtley on the floor. Defend!

Usually, there is some sort of general pecking order when it comes to who shoots and when. Typically, KF is the #4 or 5 option. With MJ starting, she is probably #4. With BH starting, she is #5, same if CD starts. All that means is that it usually isn't her job to jack up a 3 with 10 or less seconds gone on the clock. Option 1 for this team will almost always be to see if they can get a decent shot for SD or BS near the hoop. If a play develops for any of the players early to get a lay up, that is 1A. The next choice is KML from almost anywhere, with BS a close second. Once you get past 20 seconds, then it gets to be a matter of almost any player taking a decent shot. Any team that is able to stop the entry pass to our post can force the better jump shooters up the option ladder. Geno's teams usually have a pretty good sense of who the plays have to run through before a shot goes up.
