Are we the first women’s team to reach the 20 win mark this year ?

Team had an off night. I'll attribute the performance to a let down after a very physical and emotional game against ND.

Azzi, in her post game interview court side, alluded to the fact that the performance was not up to standard and there was work to be done.

This team understands what is expected.
 
41 point mov, 83 points scored, 42 points allowed

That's a good line especially when considering how many bricked threes were taken and missed, and that we had a 9 point 3rd Q.

Important note - Azzi was 0-6 on threes to start, she hit 50% from three from there out. Shooters have to shoot themselves out of a slump.

Just not a good Uconn game:
Led 20-2 to start and Q1 and then gave up an 0-8 run.
Led 21-2 to start the second Q, and closed 10-8
Score 2 points during the first 7:17 of Q3 but rallied to score 7 more points in the final 2:43 to win the Q by a 9-8 score - thought I was back at the FF watching Uconn/Stanford set women's basketball back a decade!

We're on to Seton Hall on Sat!
 
Well we saw what happens when big girls are in foul trouble and were not hitting are treys. Foul trouble makes us unable to play D. Yep we won by over 30. Non the less not a great game and we won big. Now with one day off and travelling back to CT to play Seaton Hall before the storm.

  • So how’s this for a stat line for Sarah: 21 pts on 8/9 shooting (3/4 from the arc & 2/2 FT), 4 rbs, 3 ast, 3 stl………..in the first half 😮 If Sarah continues to shoot the ball like she has for the rest of the season, she will be the first player in history to have a 60/40/90 season.
  • Azzi’s last homecoming to the DMV with UConn WBB and, while it wasn’t her best shooting game, she really had a very nice all-around game with 19 pts, 6 rbs, 5 Ast, 2 stl & 1 blk.
  • DEFENSE - Lead by Ash with 5 steals, UConn managed 19 steals for the game, forcing 28 Georgetown turnovers while holding the Hoyas to 1/17 from the arc.
  • Mercifully, Geno pulled off the press in the 2nd half, which put something of a damper on UConn’s offense. In the 3rd qtr, UConn outscored Georgetown 9 to 8. 🤯
  • Public Service Announcement for those who may not be aware. The next game against Seton Hall has been moved up from Sunday to Saturday at noon due to the forecast winter snowstorm on Sunday.

You have to treasure outstanding defense to appreciate today's game. Much of our offense derived from pressure, turnovers and layups.
There were a handful of perfect plays on offense but, mostly, the contest was uninspiring and, at times, ugly. I think we scored 9 points in the third quarter. I saw far too many ill advised passes on UCONN's part. And several cases of "bad hands,' where UCONN players simply mishandled the ball. Williams still has a tendency to over complicate perfect feeds to her in the post. Just catch the ball, go up and put it in the hoop. Saturday might be ugly, because players will be tired and Seton Hall is not competitively inspiring. No matter the rhetoric, it is hard to give 100% when the competition is just not there. And one sided games tend to get chippy and physical. UCONN doesn't need that. I do hope they get back to Storrs before that snow rolls in.
 
Games against Georgetown, especially on the road, tend to be ugly. Q3 was very ugly, and Q4 was only a little better.

I was happy to see Azzi taking more shots, but her 3-ball was off. Sarah was phenomenal, but looked tired late in the game. This was the first time Azzi and Sarah played in Q4 in a Big East game. G'town beat Marquette this week, which surprises me.

Serah was 3-3 from the floor and 6-6 on FTs, plus added 6 boards, 3 steals, and 4 blocks.

We shot 52/28/100. Unusual stats for us from the arc and the line. One good, one bad.

We won a road game by 41. No major complaints.

What practice? I ask this only because I don't know the team's travel plans. I was guessing that they will be on a bus or plane tomorrow. If a bus, limited time for a practice.

It is 4 hours by bus from DC to South Orange - so depending where they can get gym time they could practice in DC and then travel and arrive in the afternoon or travel in the AM and practice in South Orange in the afternoon. Taking a plane might reduce the travel time a little. I doubt they return to Storrs until after the Saturday game.
 
Oxymoron time: an unsatisfying blowout.

Yin: How can anyone be critical of a 41 point win in which the opponent was held to 42 points and 29% FG shooting?

Yang: Because the third quarter offense stank and the entry passing into traffic and the three-point shooting were, to be polite, inconsistent?

Only in Genoland.
 
This is the first live game I've seen in years... and I loved every second of it. Yeah, there was some sloppy play in the 3rd Q, but there's so much to be wowed by in everything else. Here's a few observations:
  • When Sarah turns 'it' on, she's pretty much unstoppable. And unlike other superstars, with Sarah it seems remarkably effortless. This is an illusion of course. But it really seems like she plays well within her limits. There's a bit of turnover-itis on some of her passes. I think part of what's happening is that she gets triple-teamed and the rest of the team doesn't always react quickly enough for her to pass out. This will improve soon enough, I expect.
  • Azzi looks really confident on the floor, like she's not threatened by any defender and unafraid to take chances. Her perimeter shot was a little off, but everything else was really right. 3-12 from 3, but 5-7 from 2, plus 6 rebounds 5 assists and 2 steals. That's a great line.
  • KK had a slow night for some reason, 0-3 with 2 assists and 1 turnover.
  • By contrast, Ash had 5 steals and seemed like she was everywhere. There's something both beautiful about her game that TV doesn't always capture -- her non-stop energy and intensity -- and something terrifying, too. I'd hate to have to play against her. In part this was undercut by the fact that KK seemed a bit subdued. When they are both 'on' I don't think any team in the country can really withstand the onslaught. Azzi can pick up some of KK's slack, as can Kayleigh and Blanca. But in the end, this is KK's role on the team.
  • Allie is a truly smooth presence on the court. She reminds me a bit of Taylor Mikesell, who was a quiet sniper from 3 for tOSU. Her athleticism didn't really strike you, but her shooting sure did. Allie bides her time, almost lulling opponents asleep, until she drops a couple of daggers.
  • Blanca is still in her 'force of nature' phase -- dazzling displays of athleticism, but lots of miscues too. There's lots of work for her to do, and plenty of time for her to sharpen up her game.
One last remark about CareFirst Arena: It's a pleasant enough venue. But it is not very well managed and it's in a quite difficult part of town to get to. If the game had been held at McDonough Arena -- the gym on campus -- it would have been much more enjoyable to watch. But I have a feeling no UConn away game will be in a pleasant, cozy arena this season, except maybe Seton Hall's. This is a big, noisy season for UConn.

Also, it was not easy to spot any Georgetown fans in the crowd. There was a comical moment in the 4th quarter during the media timeout. The cheerleaders went through the ritual of tossing Hoyas t-shirts into the crowd. But the crowd they were throwing them into was mainly UConn fans.

Having lived in the DC suburbs for over 25 years, I've had my travel take two hours to get from DC to I-95 above Baltimore. 🙂
That's why I was wondering...
 
I like seeing Ayanna get some minutes with a lot of starters on the floor; she's been better than I expected this year in her limited time. That touch-pass and one was fantastic and I don't know if all our bigs would have finished the layup.

If South Carolina beats Vandy this weekend, the Commodores will fall out of the top 5.
 
The problem started when we took out the starters. The girls we brought in just weren't playing defense like a team. Plus we couldnt hit the broad side of a barn for while. No 3's, no 2's, not even our bunnies were falling. But that stuff happens and we got it back together after awhile.

Williams was 3-3 from the field with only 1 TO. No complications there
