Geno calls out men's team fans for reaction after Creighton loss

I don't know how I feel about this. I appreciate his support of the men's team, but calling fans balloon knots isn't the best look. Also, I don't think anyone called for anyone to lose their scholarship so it seems kind of fabricated to me. That again, I didn't hear the question that set this up. This feels different than me then Hurley's comment which seemed less than a criticism and more an attempt to rally the fans.

Not a good look. This fanbase has been very loyal and knowledgeable. Frankly, it shoulders the bulk of the financial burden of supporting the program, which enables the staffs of both teams to be paid handsomely. We don’t have Tyson Foods or Walmart backing up the brinks truck to keep the programs swimming in cash. Geno needs to think about that before he speaks.

Gameday threads/chats are like that for every team across every major sport. Unless a game is a complete blowout and people are starting a GIF party, the contemporaneous comments are always going to include some very worried voices. It's just a reflection/venting target for the emotions the fans are feeling at that moment, and losses/negative outcomes stick with people more than wins/positive outcomes, especially since it's normal to focus on things that need improvement while you're watching a game you're invested in. Plus, there's not much time for measured analysis, since participation requires being instantly reactive.

Wow. This was kind of an unforced error. The reporter asked a question about celebrating the prior nights win over St. John's by the men's team and Geno decided to take it in another direction and be critical of the fans. It's kind of ironic because the women's teams players are very, very disciplined about their interviews and framing everything in a positive light. That training is part of the reason why Connecticut women's basketball players come out out of Storrs very poised and polished.

I'll say this for Geno, he's going to speak his mind. I want to say after 12 national championships he has the luxury of that, but honestly, he's always been that way. That's not a criticism.

C’mon now, you’ve been in the women’s chat room. I’ve seen the “doesn’t deserve a scholarship” comment many times, along with loser, waste of space, and similar. You also know friends, high school coaches, and parents read the board so this stuff gets back to the players. He’s hated the comments forever and hasn’t been shy about saying so. This is just the first time he’s said it in relation to the men’s team

I don't know. Every team has fans like that. It's not anything special about UConn fans. Check the SJU message board this week I'm sure it's brutal. That part is of the deal with sports. Forget games. Fans overreact to shots or turnovers. Geno must know that. Fan is just short for the word "fanatic."

"Mad" in this case is a synonym for insane. It comes with the territory. So there's that.

That's fine. but if you don't think he just punched the program you need to improve your comprehension. "how can one team have that many ballon knots that follow them." You can hold Geno in the highest regard but still acknowledge that he was wrong and was a balloon knot himself for saying it. We are spoiled, arrogant, and balloon knots. Fine.
