Ireland plays a five out offense - Gandy is supposed to be on the perimeter. Hence my post about not understanding the offensive scheme. I have the same thought you do, that Gandy needs to be in the paint
Yes, that’s correct. The challenge is that for a 5-out offense to be effective, you have to have players constantly moving through the lane via back cuts, pick & rolls, flashing into the paint to post up a defender, etc.

All that takes practice, timing and execution. Ireland is young and their offensive execution is not particularly disciplined, so Gandy and her teammates sometimes end up standing around. That certainly won’t be a problem at UConn.

She's starting to realize that she can play at a high level. U20 is a great learning experience in any case.
I think Ireland may retool their style of play by next year. Hopefully she'll get invited to practice with the national team.

FIRST QUARTER ICELAND 22 Ireland 16
Gandy two points on one for two shooting
two rebounds, two turnovers ( one not her fault )
Very frustrating watching the IRISH and their
chronic poor passing, and missing " bunnie".
Iceland is a guard oriented team and shows
good ball hawking skills, they anticipate and
steal even the good Irish passes.

Very Painful to watch. Iceland started out
the second Quarter on a 15 - 1 run. Iceland
hit a few 3 pointers, #4 their point guard
Jana Falsdottir is playing well offensively
and defensively. Ireland is rattled, out
of sync and their passing is HORRIBLE and
their shots roll off the rim.. The Irish
need to play Gandy in the LOW POST and
DESTROY this smaller ICELAND Guard
oriented defense. As we saw in other games
this is probably not going to happen.!!

Half TIME ICELAND 45 IRELAND 22
Gandy playing time approx 9 minutes 26 secs.
three points on one for 3 shooting one free throw
two turnovers, Zero.
Iceland guards are 5' 7" #4, mentioned above, and 5 ' 7" #7, their
tall player # 16 is 5'11" with 16 points. Irish
shots roll OFF the rim. Finally Ireland gets
Gandy to the low post and feed her but
she is SWARMED by three players (as seen in
previous games ). These are not easy finishing
shots, , but "do-able".
QUICK, ACCURATE PASSES by THE ICELANDERS.

One last stat before the final tally: # 7 for ICELAND,
5'7" guard , EVA Eliasdottir is shooting 8 for 9 with
a field goal percentage of 88.89 %! 7 for 8 on two pointers ..
(mostly on drives to the basket) and one for one on 3 pointers.
Her drives look like a hot knife going through butter!
Getting near the end of the THIRD QUARTER, Gandy
has not reentered the game since halftime. See you
after the game. THIRD QUARTER IS OVER 66 - 36.
GANDY eventually did get in. She made two free throw
for a total of 5 points total. Rebounds: 5 with five offensive.

I think it's safe to say that the offense/defense that UConn runs is slightly better than what Ireland runs! ;)

It was a terrific experience for Gandy. She's grown in leaps and bounds, and that's with (maybe) some decent coaching/development, but certainly not what she will see at UConn. I actually think it was maybe a good thing for her to work on playing out of position (or perhaps a better phrase would be "not being used properly") - getting better at lateral movement on defense, moving her feet, seeing what clearly didn't work...

By all accounts she's a terrific kid, hard worker, strong, good motor, athletic, and teachable. I honestly have no idea what her upside is, but look at a player like Tierra McCowan - averaged 6.7 and 8.6 PPG her first 2 years, then over 18 PPG her last 2 years. Not saying Gandy will be THAT good, but with her work ethic, size, etc... hopefully the sky's the limit for her!

Go Gandy! Keep working hard and come to UConn as prepared a you can possibly be!!!

I wonder where she stands with her academics? She would be a perfect candidate to follow Jana’s example and come to UConn early. She would, I’m sure, huuugely benefit from being able to practice with the team and get settled in before her official time started. Either way, I am very excited about her as I think she has the potential to be a very good player for us. It’s exciting to think what she may look like after a couple of years in the UConn system!

Someone had the audacity:) to suggest that she (Gandy) could possibly become Tina Charles by the final two years of her stay here. Though many will laugh and decry the “absurd” expectation, she does seem to have the physical foundation to become a dominant front court player. Will she be that good? Well, probably not, but she could miss that mark by quite a lot and still become a difference maker here! I personally, am very bullish on Gandy. She has all the basic requirements to become a monster in the post. I have every expectation that Chris & Geno will mold her into one of the better post players in the country by the end of her time here!

From what I see, it just appears that they are in a pickle where all their other players are small used to a 5 out scheme small ball even though they can't handle the ball. This is in conflict with a player like Gandy. I hope the Irish coaches see the opportunity they are missing and rethink their scheme for the future.

She will be just fine in a UConn scheme.

Being a pragmatist/realist, I am looking at the game after Ireland plays Croatia: I predict a
rematch with Ukraine (I predict Ukraine losing to Great Britain in the next game on Saturday). Ireland
beat Ukraine 69 - 56 recently but Ukraine had a better FG % 35.7 % to 31.9 for the IRISH.
The " difference maker" was rebounding: Irish 49 to 41 with11 more for the Irish
on the offensive boards. Ireland also won the assist battle: 21 to 16 and the steals: 11 to 6,
and (surprisingly The Irish had fewer turnovers 16, 23 for Ukraine. Ukraine committed
28 fouls to Ireland's 20. Ireland also won the points off turnovers: 25 to 3 and the second
chance points 14 to 4. Despite the poorer FG % with the extra rebounding the IRISH were
able to get off 69 shots to Ukraine's 56. This will still be a problem game IMHO. In
many ways this was Ireland's best team effort (but not Gandy's best game: 4 points and
5 rebounds, 3 offensive). Sara Hickey # 6 had 22 points to lead the way for the IRISH. I did not
realize it at the time but perhaps with GANDY being doubled and tripled teamed, this
allowed Ms. Hickey to shine. However, I do not expect SARA HICKEY to repeat her 22 points, so
for the IRISH to Win and claim 7th place in the tournament, GANDY has to have a
solid game. How will the IRISH H.C. use her? How will the IRISH respond to the
added pressure? This could be a BARNBURNER or a straightforward win by
either side (again my opinion). GO IRISH, GO GANDY, GO UCONN. Nika probably
knows quite a few players on the Croatian team. Nika Rodek is # 8 and is the primary PG for
the Croatian with 6.6 assists per game. Nika is 5' 11".

Don't believe a poorly coached team teaches any lessons. It does allow bad habits to start which future coaching has to overcome. Hopefully this is a short experience that will resolve itself once she is back playing HS ball.

Watched a few minutes of a past game and came away with two thoughts:
-Gandy is better than I had anticipated. Brings back memories of Kiah Stokes. Likely will need 1-2 years of UConn coaching to reach her potential.
-The Irish system is so different than what she will find at UConn or compete against in college that I wonder what she can learn from it. -She is frequently playing outside on defense and getting swarmed when she gets the ball inside on offense. Little opportunity to refine skills she will need at the US college level. While I don't agree that this will be a negative experience for Gandy, don't see much value for her development.

Since the first videos of her, she has slimmed dawn, has gotten much more fluid and clearly shows the potential to be a very good college center.

First Quarter IRELAND 24 Croatia 24 A nice surprise!
HALF TIME IRELAND 51 Croatia 36 In the second
period IRELAND 27 !! Croatia 12. I am unable to
access the link to stats. Gandy with some nice rebounds,
scoring on some "dump offs" into the low post. Finally
the Irish have found their shooting touch! Hopefully some
stats later. Being wrong so far on this game, I was also
wrong on the other "Qualifying game" with Ukraine beating
Great Britain. So maybe, just maybe, Ireland will play
Ukraine, but for the # five postion rather than a game for
the # 7 position ( tomorrow ).

Again trouble with accessing stats. Gandy with
a nice " dive" to the basket with a good pass
and 2 points. Gandy is on the " high" post
for offense when she is in there.

No complete stats as of yet ( that I could
access ). Gandy with a nice steal, a good
offensive rebound with a "kick out" for
an Irish three pointer. Croatia's bench was
unhappy with the second half officiating.
They were warned. Repeated comments
later... an expected " T ". Then more
comments from a coach on the bench.
He got the next "T" and was directed "OFF
THE COURT"! Gandy had a pretty good
second half. Still needs a bunch of "polishing".
So,... I had the Sunday game correct: IRELAND
vs Ukraine ( a repeat ) but not in the loser's
bracket battle for 7th vs 8th place, but in the
WINNER's BRACKET for a possible 5th Place!
Go GANDY! GO IRISH!, GO HUSKIES!
STATS: Gandy 18 minutes 43 secs
17 POINTS! 6/9 2 point shooting, 5/7 Free
throws, 7 rebounds: 4 offensive, one assist,
two steals, two personal fouls ( KEEP THOSE ARMS
UP STRAIGHT !) of 22! NICE!

FIRST QUARTER IRELAND 25 Ukraine 20
Gandy 5:26 minutes Six Points, four
rebounds one offensive 7. Ireland had
a big lead and then Ukraine hit 3/5 three pointers
Gandy is a good facilitator from the high post and
she is showing nice speed ( for her size ) on
transition offense. ( She does NOT trail the
flow!) One AIR BALL from the foul line...
not an Aaliyah Edwards... YET!
