Gamecocks 2022-2023, part two

Cardoso is most improved player hands down.

Noticeable increase in intensity and focus on both ends.

Beal has improved the shooting thank goodness but you can tell she still isn't super comfortable.

Cooke seems to have found her shot but still does crazy Cooke things.

Point guards need to find their comfort zone, but not terribly worried about them.
I was really impressed watching Cardoso. I know Maryland is really limited in size but she does look a lot better than last year. She looks like she's in great shape and is able to change ends and run the floor well. Her and Boston looked really comfortable together on the floor.

Beal is so fun to watch. Whoever she guarded, she really gave them a hard time to. When she guarded Meyer, Meyer struggled. Same with Briggs who i felt needed to have a big game for Maryland to have any chance. It's interesting offensively because teams play so off of her, i respect her discipline to not shoot 10 or 12 threes. Even 7 attempts for a non shooter is a lot but it felt like she could easily take more. It sucks teams always pack the paint so she can't play inside more.

It will be interesting to watch this year’s progression of both players In anticipation of next year. Cardosa is the heir apparent to Boston if she stays for her senior year. Beal is a senior but has the option of playing a “super senior “ Covid year. Amihere is in the same situation of having another year (maybe two due to her red-shirt year.)

None of our players need to leave early for the pros because of our 25,000 “minimum wage.” ( Actually, I’m not sure about that for Cardosa and Amihere). However, Cardosa and Amihere could both probably boost their draft status by playing a post-Boston year.

Beal’s case is more interesting. I (and many others) consider her the best defender around. If true, Does that get her a lottery ticket? Maybe/ maybe not. But can she have a breakout year offensively and enhance her status this year like Kiki did? It’s possible she could do so this year, but more likely during a post/Boston year. Plus her NIL income for the Post-Boston year is pretty well guaranteed.

We’ll see!

As I've said before. This team is gonna be hard to deal with. Putting LA at 3 with Cardoso and Boston makes them super dangerous. They have lineups that Dawn can go to that matches any team. Feagin is gonna be a problem for some teams also. Gotta get Johnson going and locked in defensively. She got lost a lot on defense. Man this team is scary good and if she locks in Juju for this class and Joyce next class you can close the doors. It's SC for a few years

Stanford will be fun to watch.

Will be interesting to see if it has the same dynamic as the last two with wildly disparate sections of the game or if the teams are a little more consistently at each other this year.

I'm curious if Stanford will miss Hull's toughness.

Juju committing today at 1:30 on ESPN according to Gamecocks Central staff writer Chris Wellbaum.

Eastern.
I just saw on the Stanford board that it’s Pacific Time. If it’s Eastern Time, that would make it a “breakfast announcement” for her .

Not saying Chris is wrong, but after lunch her time seems more logical and “ usual.” Oh well, either way, the 2023 drama ends today.

Wellbaum posted 1:30 pm ET.

EDIT: 1:30 ET gets you on one of the afternoon Sportscenters. 1:30 PT gets you on the middle of NFL Live.

It’s 1030 Pacific, 130 EST.

It’s a Sportscenter announcement.

Woj posted this on Twitter before Juju announced it on TV. Unfortunately this is how I found out and he took the surprise away from some people.
Same. I saw it just as Sage Steele first started talking to Juju

Ah, yes the school with the most unoriginal mascot and that also shares a school song with a bunch of other schools. They didn't even try to be somewhat original.

From the release for this game:

Dial Up the Defense
Head coach Dawn Staley has always put a premium on defense, but the Gamecocks have taken it to another level over the last four seasons (2019-20 to present), during which opponents have scored just 54.5 points per game.

Last season’s program-record low 50.7 points per game ranked third in the nation and helped the Gamecocks lead the nation in scoring margin (+20.2). South Carolina was second in the nation in field goal percentage defense (.332) and first in blocked shots per game (7.4).

No team reached its scoring average against the Gamecocks last season, including some of the SEC and the nation’s most prolific offenses, and only three came within single digits of it – Missouri (Dec. 30), Mississippi State (Jan. 2), vs. Kentucky (Mar. 6).

This season, South Carolina is ninth in the nation in scoring defense (43.5) and eighth in scoring margin (+47.5). Opponents have shot just 24.4 percent (fourth in the nation), and the Gamecocks lead the nation with 10.0 blocks per game.

.........

At the end of the day, SCar probably doesn't need to score efficiently.

Also Damn ... only three teams came with if single digits of their scoring average against last season's champs. That's pretty amazing.

Couple that with leading the world in rebounding margin... not rocket science.

Speaking of the record books, South Carolina will take the lead in the all time series vs Clemson tonight.

The younger chicken fans don't remember when Clemson was a pretty good program. They haven't been the same since Jim Davis left.

He was consistently pretty darn good.

Not sure what went into the administration up there retiring him, but he did have a rapid decline. They cut bait pretty quick though after his tenure. I don't know why.

He did go on to coach again though.

And Clemson hasn't had a pulse since.
