Furman Postgame Thread

We're seeing a lot of top 10 freshman doing incredibly well this year.

But that's rare.

Mullins was a top 20 freshman.

I'd argue that for the vast majority of freshman in that 5-25 range, it takes a year or them to become forces in college.

We have seen this over and over and over at UConn.

Ray Allen, Caron Butler, Rip Hamilton, Rudy Gay, Kemba Walker, Jeremy Lamb... Jordan Hawkins.

Braylon could vastly improve with another year, especially since he missed the first 10 games of the season when the coaches had largely installed the sets for the offense.

All of the players above became forces in their second year.

I know many of them like Ray Allen played well in their first year but they made 4 shots a game and played for about 20 minutes.

6 for his last 42. 14%
What do you guys think it is? Are they defending him more closely now forcing him to rush his shots? Has that got in his head? Looks like he’s rushing his shots. Quick release like Stef Curry.

If Tarris has an advantage, you have to ride that advantage. But you can’t rely on your C going for 31 points and 27 rebounds to win games. If Tarris isn’t playing like Wilt or is in foul trouble, you still need to score

The offense is generating fantastic looks. It’s up to the players to make the shots. Simple as that. If Solo and Braylon don’t start making the great looks they’re getting, we won’t win the title. Funny enough the 1 three that Solo made was actually a really difficult and contested shot

I don’t know what Mullins pregame and off day regimen looks like but I know Cam Spencer would be shooting his way out of this slump in an empty gym with the lights off.

Your point seems to be that we must shift away from an offense that sets up great looks from 3. Mullins is in a horrible 5/38 slump from 3, but before that he was a near 40% shooter from 3 for about 3/4 of the season. So we know it’s possible. Would you agree with that?
It’s possible, sure. So is 0-8. In a tournament you can’t afford to Hope for someone to break out of a slump.

.-.
The best play by Furman was when Solo waved his hand 5” from House and they called a three-point shooting foul. That was the worst phantom foul call I’ve seen all year.
I guess the non-big-east refs are conspiring against us also?

Feed the beast. Run Tarris to the post and insist that it goes in before the threes start being jacked up from anywhere.

Or have him draw the double team and find the open shooter. See if we can get some early threes to spark the confidence. We're due. I think it will be important to establish the outside jumper early.

Two things:

1. He's rushing his shot way more often than early in the year.

2. He's missing plenty of open shots with his feet set and enough time because he's got an issue in his stroke that always leads to inconsistent shooters: he doesn't consistently finish with a straight arm.

Players form/shot can look all sorts of different, but if your follow-through doesn't look similar to the below pics, you're going to be inconsistent. If your arm is bent, there's enough small variation in your finishing position/follow through that it all but guarantees inconsistency.

He's better from inside the arc because he doesn't have this issue as much there.

I can't find any good pics of Mullins, but some crappy screenshots...

You just can't have that bent of an arm after your release and be a great/consistent shooter.
