I have always believed that most top players pick coaches. They don't pick schools, they don't pick conferences, they don't pick based on weather averages. They pick coaches.

Without question. I always laugh at people who try to make the argument that a kid commits "to the school not the coach".

If Geno and his staff left tomorrow, how many of those committed girls would still want to come to UCONN. The number would drop off real quick, even if UCONN managed to hire a good coach.

I'll play devil's advocate.

For starters though, I am beyond excited to watch the next 5 years, and I hope no one reads this post as raining on anyone's parade. (ett, I know you're not celebrating, I had others in mind.). That said ...

Let's assume no Durr, no Cox. In that case I think we drop a notch after Stewie and MoJeff finish up. Still the best team in WCBB and favorites for NC. But not absolutely prohibitive favorites and less than 50% chance of going undefeated.

My rationale is that as good as these two recruiting classes are, we are likely to have fewer top 5 and top 10 players than we've had in our most dominant years. Now we may have eight or even nine of the top 50 players in 2016/17, and that's just nuts. But at the same time we might not have any in top 5 and maybe only one in top 10. Top 5/top 10 players are pretty important for absolute dominance, so the likes of USC and ND may have a chance.

Of course I would love to be proven wrong!

Love this post. Agree 100%. I further love the idea we are looking into 3 seasons away for a chink in our armor. Kia Nurse and Gabby Willaims are so key.

Thats a fair analysis of her play. I will say one thing about all of the Samuelson girls is that they are always ready to get off a shot without waiting, thinking, moving. Ball in hands, ball out of hands, ball in basket.
I am astounded by how quickly she releases her shot. We presently have KML who's a phenomenal shooter at about 6' but how can you possibly defend someone like KLS who is 6'3" and gets her shot off "that quickly" and accurately. Amazing!

I'm actually inclined to think that the ONLY PLAYERS we'll be getting over the next couple of years is top 10 or top 5 players. They'd be the type who've shown through AAU play, etc. that they have a lot of talent and a lot of faith in their abilities. I'd like to think that they'd welcome the opportunity to compete for minutes on a talented team that is likely to compete for national championships. Maybe we'd struggle to get the good, solid players (in the top 25-50 range) that we've had that were wonderful practice players and would get appreciably less court time. The one thing that Geno would make those top tier players aware of is that nothing is promised and they'd have to work at it day in and day out in practice in order to get court time. That isn't anything different than he's done over the last almost 30 years in Storrs. Do you think someone like Maya or Stewie would be scared away from committing to UConn because they had a roster of talented players???? No, they would welcome the competition and the opportunity to EARN their way onto the court and play for national titles. That is exactly the type players we do want and that will continue to make us the center of women's college basketball.

As long as Geno is coaching and UConn is winning the top kids will continue to come. Maybe not all of them and frankly we dont need all of them but we will have enough of them to continue to win. Do you understand as fans how ridiculous it is to say undefeated. UConn is the only team that continues to go undefeated and now it is expected. Do you also understand what it would take for UConn to not go undefeated? Seems almost impossible with our current roster but it can happen and it will more then likely not happen barring injuries and crazy foul trouble for at least the next 2 years. Banking on our next 2 classes it may not happen for another 5 years but could just based on the law of averages.

See the top kids with the right attitude and proper coaching want to play for UConn. UConn is special. UConn is the best. There is and has never been a dynasty like what Geno has created at UConn. The kids that commit want to be pushed, they want to get better. Its not about them scoring alot of points or being the focal point because once you get to college everybody is so good its not about you its about the team. Geno has mastered the team concept physically, mentally and individually. Kids who want to play for UConn understand that. Kids who want to be a big fish in a little pond dont understand that and thats fine. It is a privilege to have Geno come see you play and it is a privilege to have him offer you the opportunity to play for him because UConn isnt just a WCBB program. Its the best and there is only one number 1.

So when you look at our current roster and who has verballed in next years class and who has interest in UConn and who UConn has interest in in the following years classes all we need are a few because we already have enough.

I was reading a post from another board saying if we get DeShields and another guard and Durr we still cant compete with UConn...and imo their right, because its not about the players you get its about the players you get and have the coach who makes them what they become. The reason UConn believes they will always win is because they have been drilled with fundamentals repeatedly every day that it has become reflexive. Other teams dont look like UConn when they execute or when UConn puts pressure on them because UConn exposes their weaknesses and they dont know how to play off their weaknesses.

So fwiw . As long as Geno is coaching UConn some of the top kids will always come. There are not "IFs" about it. We may not go undefeated every year but we will come close. At this present time I believe with everything in me that UConn will not lose a NC while Breanna Stewart is there. I also believe with the verbals we just got that if those kids develop like everybody else has we may not lose a NC for the next 5 years. Either way imo we will be ranked number 1 in the next 5 years preseason polls and we will be of Geno and we will because we are UConn.

Any recruit who saw the SNY Geno shows, and watched the one segment in practice, where Stewie was guarding one of the practice men on the perimeter. Geno had her do it 5 times, until she got it right, he wanted her to move her feet to be in position. That shows the Connecticut way, everyone has to get it right before you move on.

There are realistic limitations to the number of top-tier players the roster can absorb and the size numerically of a winning/championship rotation.

Just my gut feeling, but I cannot imagine that Durr and Ogunbuwale will both go to the same, um, program. Same with Cox and McCoy. I just don't think UConn will get both of either pair.

OTOH, I also like our chances to get one of each aforementioned pair of similar players.

One of each pair wouldn't be bad at all!

Well said!!!! From the little bit of video I've seen, I might like the idea of Ogunbuwale being the guard we get because she looks like a tough, very rugged and very talented player. I have seen very little of Durr but as you've said one of each pairing, whoever that would be would be pretty darn good.

Let me say this and this is JMO. We dont need Durr to win 5 NCs . With that said I do believe she verbals to UConn. Kib I agree with you post completely. We will be looking for another post player and one other big over the next year or two. Brown McCoy and Boley seem to be interested in UConn

Brown McCoy and Boley seem to be interested in UConn

Ok, is this supposed to be an inside thing again, Tony? Because it appears as though Brown is locked into LSU, A&M, or Tennessee, and that UConn isn't particularly interested anymore. Also, McCoy just told Adamec that her list of schools is around 30.

I'm going to guess they're done for '15. If Durr comes, you're going to end up with multiple players leaving.

SIUconn Husky welcome to the Boneyard. You seem to know alot about WCBB. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself. Are you an AAU coach as you seem to have alot of connections.

Tony may be talking about Jaelyn Brown, not Kalani Brown.

I too am hearing that UConn and Kalani are not looking like a match, since the Butler transfer.

I like our chances with Durr.

How does one have a list around 30? I don't get it. Maybe in one afternoon, but heck, it would take an hour of pros/cons to get the list down to 15.

Dear hoophuskee, Courtney Ekmark, Kia Nurse, Gabby Williams, Sadie Edwards, Natalie Butler, Katie Lou Samuelson, Napheesa Collier and De'Janae Boykin.

If players end up leaving, they end up leaving. Sad, but that's the way this stuff works. It's happened before and it will happen again. If UCONN gets a chance to get Durr, they take her in a heartbeat and without a sliver of regret.

I don't want to see anyone leave, but I understand how it works. All of our kids are talented enough to start at some point in their career. But our numbers are getting larger, and PT could be an issue. As usual, kids who get it and practice well will be rewarded. Of course, injuries and/or a redshirt can change those numbers quickly.

I think both Morgan and Kiah would have started for any other team in the country last year. They played hard in limited minutes and contributed to a 40-0 team. They will have their time. Asjha Jones and Tamika Williams didn't start for much if their career, and they went 4th and 6th in the draft.

The kids that Geno picks want to play and to win. Very few, if any, want the focus to be on them at the expense of the team.

Oh, I'm sure they will. But others will have to leave. You can't put a half dozen 25-30 minute/game talents on the same roster and expect to get seven others decent playing time.

One thing I know ...I would like to see both Stewie and Gabby ...Both dunk in the same game!!! :)Would that bring the fans to their feet??

Geno said on one of his shows that the max on his bench would be 12 because todays players don't want to sit and he believes the best players have to be on the floor, I think he's fine with 10 but has to factor in injuries

I have to agree emphatically with regard to Sluconn. I'm amazed at how much very useful information he has provided and I'm totally in line with just about every comment he has to make. A really big asset to the Boneyard, indeed!

And CD said, in an ideal world, they would have classes of 4, 3, 4, and 3, which sums to 14. It will be interesting. We've had rosters that have been too small, at least in terms of effectiveness, since Maya's senior year. At least there was no margin for error in terms of fouls or injuries. We effectively had 6 this past year and were fortunate.

Well according to the cesspool known as The Summit Durr's final 3 does not include UConn. I am not a member there so I could not read the thread but would be interested to hear what the source is.

Speculation on ESPN board was that headline was just another inflammatory and baseless headline intended to distress non-member UCONN fans

It doesn't really matter how many top tier players Geno has as long as he can put 5 on the floor at once as proven by the past season. With 5 top tier players on the court it doesn't matter what the other team has, he always wins. So more than 5 top tier players is just a hedge against injury.

I don't think she's even taken an unofficial visit yet, has she? I thought she was recently asked about UConn, and she said she had planned to take an official visit in the fall. Perhaps first night? Though we saw how well that worked out with Wilson. Do the kids that ultimately end up at UConn generally decide fairly early/quickly? Geno has said this before, that usually the kids that work out really want to be there, and know it pretty early on in the recruiting process, and that he'll never understand why some drag the decision making process out as the schools and programs aren't going to change (I disagree with his last point because of potential coaching changes between commitment and arrival on campus, but based on his long tenure I can understand that). Sounds about right given how quickly the 3 from the class of '15 verballed after their official visit.
