One thing seemingly lost in the discussion about Silas’ adjustment is the defensive end. I believe he came in with the reputation as a good, if not elite, defensive player. There have been multiple instances where he gets himself behind the play. Frequent foul trouble may be indicative of a player who is not yet processing the D as quickly as he should, and hopefully will. No doubt he has the game to adapt to the complexities at both ends. I can’t wait to see it!
Silas currently grades out as our 2nd best defensive player, he's been fine on that end

Going 10-1 against this schedule has to be one of the best starts ever for UConn. One loss coming against a Top 3 team and 4 or 5 wins against Top 20? And all with injuries and missing players..

I think this team has all the makings to be very special. In 2023, UConn was a little under the radar in terms of how special they were. Especially in the early season. I remember talking to friends, not UConn fans, saying this team is good almost having to convince them a NC was possible.

This team is right there, full spotlight, and taking everyone’s best shot. Not perfect but you know this team is only going to get better with more games played…

Went as good as it could have gone, they ground it out. Path to a 1 seed looks really solid as you’d think the other 3 will be winner of B10 and B12 and then Duke.

Right now to me that looks like Michigan, Arizona, Duke and UConn.

A gritty, slugfest. Not pretty, but these are the games you have to be able to win. We were overmatched inside, and once again lost the battle of the boards, but what's encouraging is the team had great resolve and was determined to get the win. I love how unselfish this team is and how everyone stepped up in moments when they needed to. Defense was tenacious. With Hurley's culture, every minute a player plays counts- and I love that.

A side note- I find Todd Golden really grating and annoying. I thought he should have been whistled for a T after his tirade when Solo was clearly fouled by being grabbled around the waist. On the other hand, we have to be impressed at how Hurley has really practiced restraint for the most part thus far.

Agree on Golden and whines even when wrong. (This is why other teams fans don’t like our guy too lol). He was up 18-4 in free throw attempts and was bitching.

By the way great call on Haught late game when he moved out a would be help defender by boxing him out before there was even a shot attempted which would’ve left a wide open lane for a lay up. Chimbeyu and the other big dude got away with a couple of those clear outs prior.

For some reason Karaban alwasys throws the ball to the ref when we face pressure, it allows the defense to get touch tight and it is then much harder to get it in. Notice the easiest inbound was the one time he didn't do it and Ball was able to get open.
When I coached my thought process inbounding after a made shot was whoever is closest to the ball grab it immediately and inbound it to whoever is open so the defense can’t set up.

.-.
Yeah. Noticed a lot of shirt tugging by Florida that didn’t get called.
Calls seemed to be more even later in game, which helped Uconn get to the line finally.
Mullins scored on a nice drive while his shirt was being held. It might have been his last points of game.

What I like about this team is that they seem to be having more fun this year as opposed to last year team.

Last year the pressure of being two time defending champs the huge target on theirs and the coaches back was too much. This years team seems to be more relaxed and loose. They feel some sense of freedom. The guys they brought in have brought that energy

Maybe so, but Malachi is playing with so much more confidence and guts. Hopefully Silas figures it out, but he doesn’t seem up to the task right now. Not sure why Malachi is having more fun out there. Maybe a difference in personalities.
IIRC the UConn fandom was freaking out about Newton until about Jan 2023 when things finally started clicking for him. I have no concerns of Silas not figuring things out.

Seemed like Reed was getting called for any contact yet Chimb got away with a lot of physical play.

Is it legal to grab a player’s jersey? Seems like that happens to Ball and Mullins and never gets called

9 assists and no turnovers. He should be starting. Ive seen enough of Demery at this point. Let him figure things out from the bench. Mal has figured things out pretty quickly.
Terrible take. This team winning a natty this year needs the best version of Silas out there. Malichi is a great backup PG that can handle the pressure if shoved into the lead role, but if he's our starting PG, that's not optimal.

Sometimes I wonder if people here actually watch the game.

1. Huge game by Reid, especially if he'd not 100%. It was 3 vs. 1 on the backboard. We will need to improve rebounding though Florida is a beast on the offense glass. Not likely to see a better rebounding team this year. Reibe is a factor. He is just what we need to manage Reid's overuse and fouls.

2. Speaking of fouls, the refs swallowed the whistle in the 2nd half (good) but we need to stay out of early foul trouble. It forces Hurley’s hand on the rotations and matchups.

3. Speaking of Hurley, great job on containing Lee in the 2nd half. I can't remember seeing a faster guy with the ball. Without him we cruise. Also, good job allowing Mullins to get something positive from the game even after he forced his first couple shots. He was able to find his way at the end. Still needs time.

4. Speaking of Mullins, dude can't guard a chair. Gators were blowing by him like he wasn't even off the bus. That needs to improve a lot by March or other good teams are going to target him. Though 3 of 4 games coming at the Boston Garden, Allen Fieldhouse and MSG vs top 10 teams, the kid is fearless and isn't bothered by the big stage. Can't teach that.

5. Huge game by Smith, don't win without him in the 2nd half. Silas had an excellent game on defense, the fantasy players aren't giving him his due.

Foot on the gas for Texas. Win that one and roll the Big East, which this team should and lock up a 1 seed.

This team will get better which is exciting to think about.

Florida has played a ridiculous schedule and are a much better team than a 5-4 record might indicate. Arizona, Duke, UConn, TCU, Florida St., Miami, and three cupcakes.

This has to help us in the metrics, right?

I’m so glad that you mentioned that because I was watching how much contact with the body that our players were experiencing on their way to the hoop and there was no whistle. Nope that was just fine according to the referees. Grab the jersey., body up on players that are going up for shots, no whistle.

Now that would be fine if they were calling it both ways like that. But they were not. Anytime one of those Florida guys went to the hoop and they got bumped. They were going to the line..

I’ve said this before, but I think one of the reasons why we do so well in the NCAA tournament is that we get a fair shake for the most part in the tournament games. So maybe games we lose by a couple points or struggle in the regular season with call discrepancy like this, we win.

I was most impressed by the resilience of the team.

Solo put it perfectly in an interview at the end of the game when he said that when people sub off the court + the next person comes in there’s no drop off. In fact, sometimes it gets worse for the other team. Reibe/Mullins coming off the bench “are you kidding me” is gotta be the thought of opposing coaches..

That was our advantage that took us to national championship and it may well do it again who knows? It’s a long season though way too early to project.

Good win. Balanced offensive attack. Great D from JS and Ross. Got to minimize the fouling. Could have cost us this victory and kept the score close.

To be fair, Mullins backed way off after that immediate third foul and I wouldn’t judge that as his capacity to play defense. He’s shown that he’s a solid defender.

Gotta love the guy who wonders if people are watching the game, then brings up Mullins playing in Boston. He was out for that game.

I love this rating. I know im stating the obvious but a players defensive performance is spread out over the entire game/games. They arent perfect EVERY play. If you get dunked on, or you lose your man off a switch or someone hits a 3 in your face it doesn't make you a bad defender. These are just very visible plays so it seems worse. All the teams we play have elite scorers. They'll make a play or two on even the best defenders.

Good win against a very good, very big Florida team. It was ugly, but sometimes that’s the way it goes.

Demary with 2 assists. That won’t cut it. He has to be more decisive and others have to move and create passing lanes. Smith had 9 assists, showing how to do it. Our offense is built off of assists, not one on one play.

Reed looked good early then faded a bit. Florida’s 2-3 bigs took away a lot in the paint and I thought we wasted a lot of possessions challenging them. UConn wasn’t going to win this without knocking down jump shots. Don’t know if the game plan was bad or the decision making was bad, but we need to adjust better.

Mullins, Ball, Karaban...pretty much all of our guys are getting held when running action off the ball and it's very clear. I was surprised at the lack of those calls last night.

I thought Stew should have had more minutes in the 2nd half, but we won so it's a non issue.

I have no concerns with Mullins defense, his fouls were fouls and I think that has more to do with him still adjusting to the speed. He will be fine. He is a going to be a terror as the season goes on. His constant movement off the ball is reminiscent of Rip. Whoever is guarding him better have great cardio because he is going to wear them down.

I agree…Lee was holding whomever he was guarding when trying to get through screens, consistently. They finally called one because he strangled Solo lol.

Haven’t done one of these this year. Always curious what the other team thinks/fears about us.

Unaltered quotes from Florida forum

Reid is feasting like Peat and Boozer
UConn racking up the fouls
UConn is a foul waiting to happen
I wish we had Ball on our team...he is our missing piece
UConn is shooting lights out
UConn is shooting 67% FG and 56% from 3. Ridiculous
Solo Balls shooting really opens up everything for UConn
Well, at least our girls are hotter
so hard to guard with all their picks
Play a box and 1 on Ball...mix up the defenses
The only real difference is they hit a few of their wide open 3s and we missed ours
Mullins is a bucket and a also a foul a minute guy lol
Keep running UConn...they seem to not like the fast pace
Damn that Karaban
UConn getting 17 points from their bench versus 4 points for us
Gotta change our defense against the Mullins kid
Ball is deadly from outside
“Neutral” court my
Mullins fouls out with his 7th
That one official is definitely corrupt...that 5 second call was a quick 5 seconds and then a foul when it was all ball. I bet 90 percent of his calls were for UConn
We outrebound them 40-28 and still lose

Great atmosphere - UConn fans around us were cool too

That was a really fun game. The paint was a war zone. When you get beat on the offensive boards by 10 and give up 27 FTs against a ranked team, most of the time you lose that game. But the defense held strong because everybody was playing tough. Florida shot 42% and 27% from three so we were able to overcome the rebounding problem. Big shoutout Tarris and Stewart. Everyone was battling, but they were fighting extra hard

That second half stretch was awesome. Florida goes up on the Haugh three. But then Braylon hits 3 shots, Malachi hits a tough jumper and finds Reibe for an open layup, Solo hits a three, AK blocks Lee (definitely a foul lol) and then hits a three

Then the best play of the game. Malachi hits the beautiful euro step. The first two guys that ran off the bench to mug him were Jacob Ross and Alec Millender, two guys who got 0 minutes. This team has CULTURE

From down 3 to up 8 in around 6 minutes during that stretch. That was so great to watch. Really good win, LETS GO HUSKIES
