I don’t know how much stock to put into that, but Cooley did nothing postgame to indicate that he was staying at PC - he sounded like he was gone.

Absolutely devastating for Providence fans. They’ve been talking about this being his dream job forever and not only is he dumping them, but he’s dumping them for an in-conference rival.

We’ve told Providence fans for years that they have a hard ceiling…well, Ed Cooley is about to show it to them.
If the fact that one of their own, born and raised in Providence, is willing to leave and take another job in conference doesn't finally convince PC fans that they'll never be a top program, then I don't know what will lol.

This is not a good move for him. He will be haunted by PC fans the rest of his life and should not live in RI again. Recruiting wise he will do no better than Patrick did and I think he may bring Gtown to what PC was but probably no better

If he can recruit like Ewing he will be in good shape. Recruiting was never the problem for Ewing. Retaining players and everything else with coaching was a big problem for Ewing

Bobby Hurley to PC is not exactly an unrealistic proposition.
If that happens the BE conference reporters would tee up every single game like your mom’s 90’s afternoon soap opera… and I love it.

I know it isn't going to happen...but could you imagine the insanity of the Big East if Providence hired Kevin Ollie?!

Ollie at Providence
Cooley at Georgetown
Pitino at St Johns

...add all that to the current coaching lineup of the BE with Hurley, Smart, Miller, Holloway, Matta McDermott, etc

That would be completely crazy with the characters and history of all involved. Hell, the Big East could probably make more money off of a Netfilx reality series following all the teams/coaches around in a documentary than they do off their actual media rights deal! :D

Sucks for PC because Cooley is probably their coaching ceiling. They are not going to pull in a big name (lol at Donovan) and anyone else will jump to B1G/ACC/SEC if they have success.

And it sucks for me because I was actually enjoying our rivalry and competitiveness and I'm afraid they could be in for some lean years. They should hire an easily hateable coach...like Bryant HC Grasso

A UConn championship and a few more beat-downs should do the trick.

The only reason Providence had a brief revival was because UConn had Kevin Ollie recruiting from a bar stool for three years.

I don’t think he gives a crap about any of that - and you overestimate Providence’s reach in Rhode Island. This isn’t the state U, it’s a lil fritter of a private school.

I think he likely feels like it’s time for a move and it probably is. Recruiting is no longer easy with UConn back up and running next door. Getting out and getting a new five-year deal somewhere else probably feels like an escape hatch for him. It just so happens that the hatch goes to Georgetown and not somewhere else - I think any port in a storm.

I think a lot of that is true, but I think more than any port in a storm. He probably just also has high esteem for Georgetown. Cooley was 15 when they won the title. Then he was mentored by Big John. I imagine he feels a certain way about what the Head Coach of Georgetown means for the African American community as well, and sees it as a place for him to be a leader of more than just the players of Providence. You can tell by the way he talks up the Big East that 1) he loves the conference and 2) He wants to be the face of it.
