If Hurley was comfortable with those 2 guys then they would still be on the roster and they would be slated for getting all the PG minutes. The fact that he told them they have no minutes here next season and are not being given the keys to the program says everything you need to know about what the staff thinks of their talent level and ability to contribute.
Hurley probably knew he had to get 2 better guards 6 months ago when he saw how these 2 guys looked in games.
Understood.
I didn't mean any of this to say that I didn't think we needed to supplement our roster, nor that I was positive that would be enough. But I assumed with Diggins' top 60 status and Gaffney being limited but a senior who's played minutes 3 straight years, that we would probably bring in another guard but they'd be grooming Diggins for the spot.
I'm assuming the transfer wasn't entirely a 1-way street and the coaches told Diggins he doesn't have that waiting for him, which I get. But my overall point was I initially was "ok" with it given their statuses and assuming everyone didn't give up on Diggins because of a tough transition frosh year. That assumption was obviously wrong.
On that "1-way street" thing, it's being stated in this thread pretty clearly that Diggins and Gaffney were told they weren't going to have any minutes next year, is that known or being guessed at? I haven't been super in tune with every detail on the board since end of season.
If Hurley and staff actively opened up 2 spots by telling Diggins and Gaff basically they weren't going to play, despite the enormous hole, then I agree they must have been terrible in practice all year. It just seems wild for a freshman top 60 kid to be that quickly thrown to the side, particularly with no viable options available.
