Early Coaching Hotseat Edition

FYI - get it in ASAP, if this tidbit from Skim is true. 😉

The fact they mention a few months is a bit of a surprise .

Seems like someone inside Athletic Administration is preaching the official college line that WCBB is only program not to win a conference. Hence, they'd better be putting resources behind it. If correct, there are (at least for now) three McDonald's All-Americans on that roster.

I am shocked Matthew Mitchell's name (Houston Cougars) is not listed. I know it is Year One at Houston but watching a few of Houston's games this year, it was just brutal!
Yeah, I had to turn the channel shortly after watching part of a Houston game. They were Boston College level bad.

One name to consider for the Penn State job is Tammi Reiss (Rhode Island). She hasn't entertained too many openings because she, supposedly, wants to remain close to her aging parents who still live in her hometown (Eldred, NY). Well, State College, PA is technically closer to her home than South Kingstown, RI. And Tammi herself said that she wouldn't leave Rhode Island until she won an A-10 (tournament) championship. With that now accomplished...

Another possibility is associate head coach Itoro Coleman of Virginia Tech. She's done two separate five-season stints with the Nittany Lions as an assistant coach. She's also coached at Clemson (includes her only experience as a head coach--she was also a player for the Tigers under Jim Davis), Marquette, and North Carolina.

.-.
Low risk. High reward situation. Rutgers, ain't attracting top level talent. But if Redus and his coaching staff develop the talent they get and develop a style of play that catapults Rutgers back into that middle range of the Big Ten, he might be able to parlay this Rutgers job into another job at a program that he really likes.
Low risk? Rutgers AD needs to get it right now. This, I suspect, will be another bad hire.

I don't really see why it will be bad. It is a crap shoot hiring someone without head coaching experience and it doesn't always work out. But Rutgers really wasn't going to get a top prospect or current head coach - why? because they have no money, and less now. The money they are losing is incomprehensible to me even with the article that tried to explain it.

Give him at least another year. Houston was worse last year, or close to it. He probably inherited nothing worthwhile, probably doesn't have the cachet to attract any late recruits (portal or otherwise) that were not considering Houston (which probably no one was) and all in all did as well as he could with what he had.

Oooowee!! That would be interesting. Coach Yo in Florida? Nice.

Based on your comments it sounds like the greater need is for a skills-developer not a recruiter?

A great recruiter probably can’t do much with no resources. In contrast someone who is good at developing skills can take a ragtag bunch and make them into something … which would also help with recruiting .

They (AD) better just pump the brakes a bit then and lower expectations. I mean anything can happen, but I am not expecting Rutgers WBB to turn into a competitive program for a long time.

Outside of Redus stint with LSU what made him be considered a “top recruiter?” Vanderbilt was a disaster top to bottom

You cant get rid of someone after 1 year after taking over a doormat. You'll never get another coach!
I know that. But given Mitchell's track record, I expected a little better than 7-23 and 1-17(5-25 & 1-17 last season).

Purdue expected to RETAIN Geralds. 😱

You may have seen this tweet from earlier. As of 3:25 pm, this isn’t accurate. It may end up being accurate but as of this moment no decision has been passed along to those in the know. I don’t question other reporters. They do what they do. I’m passing along what I know. Hopefully we’ll have clarity soon.

With the announcement of their last commit, I took it as a sign that Gearlds was staying. It's only Monday, so anything is possible.🤷‍♀️

I don't think he should be fired after one year. I just commented on how poorly they played--reminiscent of BC. BC's coach (Joanna Bernabei-McNamee) got seven seasons. Matthew Mitchell should get at least three.

She was huge, tonight. Big impact at both ends and really coming into her own this season.
I'm over the moon ecstatic for her. She's had to come back from two ACL injuries during high school which impacted her recruiting opportunities. She's a tough and determined person both on and off the court. Coach Thibault-Dudonis' program was the right fit from the start.

@JellyBean ........😉
Ill Be Back Jim Carrey GIF

I seem to recall that after Amanda Butler was let go, Becky Hammond had some interest but Florida also refused to pay a top rate for a coach so this is not surprising, heck they only pay t Tim Walton the softball coach who has won an NCAA title only $550K.

Mitch Northam not having a good week

He reported that Purdue was retaining Geralds and that Florida would pay <$700k.
Both reports have been challenged.
Purdue is said to still be evaluating, and Fla has said they are ready to spend.

We'll see ...

Let him be challenged. Northam isn't always right but he's better than majority of these "no real name"/"relying on AI" posters. Even the best sports writers/insiders get it wrong.

Skim Mulkey doesn't count in my opinion. Per this post I tripped across this weekend, they're an anonymous/burner account I'll always be a fan of. 😁

Former PSU player Tanisha Wright looking like front-runner for PSU job. WNBA head & asst coach history.
Kelly Mazzante (gtown assistant) also in contention.

Both are alums of the tainted leadership of Rene Portland.

Well, the taint of Rene Portland was very specific. Is there any evidence that particular taint is affecting these former players?

There may be none from the Big 12 - I'm not sure Cincy and UCF care that much. If I was a fan of those teams . . .

Athletic departments in the power conferences are focusing on men's tournaments. The next week is the last likely week I think for much activity as I have always heard the WBCA convention at the final four is a hot bed for meetings with prospective coaches.

They played for a coach who was pretty outspoken in her beliefs. I think it’s fair to ask if they share those beliefs.

Now that the closest thing to a Purdue beat writer confirms what Northam said earlier in the week, how bad of a week is Northam having? 🤷🏾‍♀️😉

$1.6 million doesn't sound like a whole lot, considering the buyouts in MCBB. Purdue could likely find the funds to get rid of her, if they really wanted to.
