Early Coaching Hotseat Edition

Purdue absolutely should be looking but the longer they are silent the less inclined I am that they will make a move.

Not sure I see any other P4 programs making changes. The abysmal programs are either already in new coach rebuild mode or just made the change so 3 years seems to be the minimum needed from the previous 5 years. The big football money has changed the narrative at some schools…

Known for recruiting more than coaching. I don't see this ending well.

It may or may not end well for Rutgers but I see it as a win-win for Redus. They have to hire somebody. Coaches like Berube and Thibault aren't going there. You're right that Redus is known more for recruiting than coaching so if Rutgers hires him he'll definitely get more coaching experience. He's accomplished a lot as an assistant so I can't blame him for trying for this opportunity at this point in his career. If he succeeds, great. If it doesn't go well, he'll have gained a lot of experience as HC and will have plenty of opportunities to go back to being an assistant.

To be clear, my comment was about Rutger's decision, not Redus's.

LSU’s high school and transfer recruiting appears predicated on turning the bayou into Hollywood or LA. Steakhouse dinners, cash guns, DJs and music videos galore.

There’s nothing wrong with that, it’s clearly working, but I don’t think it’ll translate

Known for his recruiting at LSU.

He was a terrible recruiter for Vanderbilt. People seem to forget that.
Mulkey landed top recruits at Baylor. It’s not shocking she landed them at lsu. And if you actually look at their Hs recruiting collectively only 2025 was a good class.

I’m all in to criticize Mulkey but we gotta do it for the right reasons. She also got Flau’jae, Sa’Myah Smith, Del Rosario, and Mikaylah Williams to commit before the 2025 class

That's right. She had Sytia Messer at Baylor. Mulkey will find another recruiting director. Redus II is not a huge loss, IMO. He's got an inflated reputation. He isn't know for player development, as far as I know.

Flau'jae and Mikaylah are not in the same recruiting class.

Del Rosario was a HUGE bust and transferred out (doesn't play much for what was an elite team this year).

Smith was a good find, but she also transferred out (to a lesser program and hasn't made many strides there).

I’m not criticizing Kim at all. She is a great recruiter (when she wants to be) I was speaking more about Redus getting all this hype for his recruiting.

2023- Landed Williams (who MK recruited since Baylor and was a Louisiana native). Rest of class (ADR, Velez, Kent) was a bit of a bust all who transferred out

2024- LSU missed on every blue chip recruit and only signed Jada Richard who I will say is developing nicely at LSU

2025- Great class

2026- sign Lola but missed on 8-9 other Hs kids they hosted

I just don’t understand how he is considered a recruiting “guru”. He did land morrow and helped with Angel so credit there but outside of that…

It’ll be interesting how he does at Rutgers. He don’t have the nil budget and selling a program without a HOF coach at your side will be interesting

Besides the Mulkey connection, there are more LSU-Rutgers connections: Rutgers president William Tate and new athletic director Kelli Zinn both previously worked at LSU.

"We are thrilled to welcome Gary and his family to Rutgers," Zinn said. "Having worked with him previously, I've seen firsthand the energy, commitment, and competitive mindset he brings to coaching. Coach Redus is well known as one of the top recruiters in the country, with an exceptional ability to create relationships and attract elite talent. He is an outstanding teacher of the game with a reputation for developing student-athletes to reach their fullest potential."

I've read the thread and Kim has managed to bring in top-rated talent before Redus II joined her at LSU.

Redus II claims that he knows Rutgers well. I don't know what that means, but I hope it also means knowing and being in touch with high schools and/or AAU programs that can feed into Rutgers ranging from the Newark and Paterson areas to the Jersey shore to name but a few that produce top-rate talent.

Low risk. High reward situation. Rutgers, ain't attracting top level talent. But if Redus and his coaching staff develop the talent they get and develop a style of play that catapults Rutgers back into that middle range of the Big Ten, he might be able to parlay this Rutgers job into another job at a program that he really likes.

We shall see. I wish him all the best at Rutgers.

Charmin Smith would probably find coaching (and recruiting) at Stanford easier than coaching at Cal.
Cal didn't "lose" Suarez....she graduated and chose to move on. There IS a difference. Beyond that, I think Charmin very much likes Cal and wouldn't leap across the Bay regardless. It's a challenging job, given finances, faciltities, etc...but she's a great fit and I appreciate the teams she's built in this era of NIL and the culture she embodies at Cal.

Are we really done with P4 coaching firings??

There will still likely be some turnover when some current coaches move up the food chain. Not that there are a lot of plum open jobs.

Though PennSt has potential....

Redus was quoted as saying "I am no stranger to the rich history of basketball here at Rutgers and I look forward to building on that legacy as we move the program forward." At lot of us know about the history of the program but don't necessarily know Rutgers--the program--well. I think Redus was just saying that as an outsider that he's familiar with the program's history.

I am shocked Matthew Mitchell's name (Houston Cougars) is not listed. I know it is Year One at Houston but watching a few of Houston's games this year, it was just brutal!

You cant get rid of someone after 1 year after taking over a doormat. You'll never get another coach!
