Dom Amore’s Sunday Read: Why Cooper Flagg fits UConn’s model of ‘basketball people'

It would be nice to get the #1 recruit, but top 5 recruits do not win NCAA championships, which is the goal. The last top 5 recruit (by 24/7 as Duke's Okafor was rated #6) that lead their team to the NCAA championship was Anthony Davis of Kentucky in 2012.
I mean the correlation here isn't very strong. Only one team wins the national title every year. I don't think that's directly tied to the level of recruits on any given team. Could it be harder to win a national title with all highly regarded freshman vs a mixture? Sure.

Does Danny Hurleys ability to win a national title suddenly get harder next year if Cooper Flagg commits to the Huskies? Absolutely not.

This makes me think an announcement is coming soon

Hmmm a number two or number one? Also, note that the Husky head is directly over Cooper's name.

I'm not saying, I'm just saying.

Making some headway here...

But the teams that typically get those players don’t keep players three and four years very often and are often lacking role players who are satisfied to stay and play 5, 10, or 15 minutes a game. When you have 10 4 and 5 star rated players on your roster, they don’t want to be role players. That’s why so many hit the portal.
That's my exact point. Going after 5 star's is not a bad strategy. Going after all 5 stars is.

I agree with that. I will say that the schools that largely get top 5 recruits do tend to “collect” 5 stars. Kentucky, Duke, and UNC tend to lose guys in the portal rather than bring in important role players through the portal. Timberlake to Kansas seems like more the exception than the rule.

Pre Duke visit, I was confident.

Post Duke visit and seeing him in with the Duke 'crazies' seemingly having a good time even though it was corny ...I wasn't very confident anymore.

Now seeing the new Duke pics with the guys he just visited giving him the 'eyes' and saying 'teammy' in the comments section whilst also posing with his duke fan grandparents....well my dream has been officially shot to hell.

Oh well....onward and upward! Looking forward to another great season!

Idk anymore. And I frankly don’t really care. I just want it to end.

I too believe the winds are definitely blowing in the direction of Duke - based on no inside info, just tea leaves.

VJ is going to Duke. That much is pretty clear to me. He's trying to get Cooper to come with him.

Ngongba needs to complete his process to decide between his schools.

Cooper might want to wait to see where Ngongba is leaning.

Now you're really going to hate me. Ngongba is also nexted.

I'm resigned to him committing to Duke. I had been the entire time, except for the last week or so when I suddenly got optimistic (knowing deep down that I was just setting myself up for disappointment). If he ultimately commits to the good guys, I'll be very happily surprised, but I'm certainly not expecting it.

Here's the deal -- IF we do miss out on Flagg, Ngongba, etc., it will all still work out in the end. We've missed out on top recruits before, and we've won plenty of championships without them. If Duke truly lands Flagg, Ngongba and Edgecomb, they'll just need to restock one year later. They are Kentucky 2.0.

No. Ngongba would be a bad loss

Totally agree. Having the ability to pick the 5 star or stars that you want and fit your system would be the way to go. Not just get as many as you can, throw them out there and see what happens ala Calamari
