Depth Chart (Released)

Glad to see that Fines earned "or" starter status, I thought he might be a complete bust.

Maurisseau must have some serious speed not only making the two deep at WR but also starting on the kick return team.

Surprised TJ Gardner didn't make the two deep, coach must be sending a message to work harder.

That’s a new thing to blame the “people on social media” for....depth chart.

I like Edsall, but this is where he could be better....how about he realizes the fans want to see this information and it gets them buzzing for the season? His inspirational leadership quotes aren’t enough to sustain us without any games to discuss.
Or said another way, "says the guy who tweets out bat signals". Edsall has always been peculiar in this fashion. He will talk about needing to bring the fans back, but he seems to loathe the things that keep fans engaged and interested when there are no games.

He’s not wrong... depth charts are overrated the first week of the season. His question was in direct response to question of Scott over Mensah @ RB.

I didn't say he is wrong, I just think he shouldn't use the blame social media defense.

Sort of has been reported for a couple weeks that Terry was behind Swenson

Swenson was one of the few Diaco recruits with an objectively impressive pedigree. I'm not too surprised.

Guess I missed that. Consensus including the Courant was that Terry would start I thought. Courant has to be a bit embarrassed. The SID has to take care of his customers better than that.

I thought Mensah played very well last season. That Scott beat him out tells me we have some talent back there.
Agree. I will be interested in seeing how the two of them are used, # of carries etc.

Here’s a player quote. “With Edsall the players who play will be the ones who deserve to play. With Diaco it was never that certain.”

A good friend of mine is a player who spanned the Pasqualoni/Diaco regimes. He has said there were always two distinct factions of players...the P recruits and the D recruits. Irrespective of merit, the D recruits likely played and the P recruits likely rode the bench during the Diaco tenure. That situation obviously didn't foster any sense of team chemistry, and the results logically followed.

For all of Diaco’s idiocy this depth chart is the biggest indictment of him.
No doubt about it. Many fans loved to focus on all the other things about Diaco but his recruiting, especially on the defensive side of the ball, was horrendous!

Or, Edsall is gonna play his guys.

He's playing the best players. Edsall wouldn't punish a player just because someone else recruited them, he's trying to win games. There are 7 Diaco recruits starting on offense. There's even 5 Diaco recruits starting on defense and Murphy and Terry are backups on D who will be getting plenty of burn.

If you say so. I don't have those data. Happy for you if you do. Just saying that is an alternate explanation. And I am not a Diaco apologist. I was immediately skeptical when he was hired and nothing he did except his second season really changed my opinion much.

Recruiting pedigree is somewhat relevant. Sure. The data we are looking for are on the field, however.

Ah. I misread that as referring to data concerning whether or not Edsall was prioritizing his own recruits over Diaco's.

Was wondering how I might have missed this so I exercised the search function and didn't find much that was relevant. Who reported this, someone in the sports media that the search function would not pick up on?

I honestly can’t remember whether it was something RE said or if it was mentioned on Matt S podcast or something

Wow, that's a young defense. The ORs at DE have me thinking that Pace and Uguak are basically getting an audition: are you good enough to play this year or will you be red-shirted?

I am very interested to see how the new rule plays out, RE1.0 seemed to do a great job managing red shirts to maximize players' development... I'm hoping Randy Rebooted can use this new rule to his advantage!
What's Pierce DeVaughn's status with his ankle? He was highly thought of by the coaches before he got hurt.

Interesting to see Fr. Pace @ DE (but Atkins is recovering from Camp injury)

I do expect to see a lot of “or” this year.

Nose tackle? Three man front still? Not sure I like that.

If it’s an embedded tweet - the search function on here doesn’t pick up the text.

It started back in mid-August when it was reported that Terry was running w/ the two’s more than the one’s. It popped up a few times since then with observations by various beat guys.

This was RE’s commentary today about Swenson/Terry:

>>Asked about Swenson on Sunday, Edsall explained that he favors players who avoid mistakes, who consistently execute their basic responsibilities. “You have a job to do, and if you do it, now you have an opportunity to get on the field,” Edsall said. “Ian is one of those guys that comprehends things well. He’ll be able to go out there, do his job the way we want him to do it.” Swenson said he [he said] continues to compete with Terry for the starting nod and that, “it could be either way game day.”<<

There is clearly some motivational messaging buried in the release of the two deep.

What's Pierce DeVaughn's status with his ankle? He was highly thought of by the coaches before he got hurt.

End of last week/beginning of this week Edsall said that “defensive lineman James Atkins, currently out with a knee injury, will be back this week while fellow D-lineman Pierce DeVaughn is “a little farther away” from returning from his ankle injury.

Bummed for cespedes. . There was a lot of positive press for himafter the Spring game so I'm not sure what happened. Is Haynes legit? True frosh beat him out - this is prob it for Cespedes

I was pretty excited about Haynes when he committed. He also seems like a better fit for the interior of the line size-wise. I don't think this is curtains for Cespedes though. Just because Haynes outplayed him in camp doesn't mean Edsall is going to shut the door on him. I would actually think that since he's gotten a lot more public praise than the other second-string G (Leone), he might be the guy Edsall uses as a swing G to give DeGeorge/Haynes a breather, or if either gets injured.

Fuller: Youth is served: Freshmen dominate UConn’s opening depth chart

>>Some of the issues can be traced to recruiting missteps with the previous coaching staff. The high school Class of 2015 is the group should be laying the foundation for the upcoming season as either true seniors or redshirt juniors. However, nine of the 22 high school seniors signed by the Huskies are no longer with the program and four others failed to crack the season-opening depth chart.<<

>>“We have to be sophisticated enough yet simple enough so we can defend what we are going to go against,” Edsall said. “We have to make sure we don’t make it too difficult. The one thing we have to be able to do is we have to have them playing fast and if you are a young kid and you don’t understand what is going on then you are not going to play fast. If they are not playing fast, we are at a disadvantage.”<<

All the signs are there for me to believe in the undefeated season once again!

First, I had a dream last night about showing up at the stadium yelling, "We ready... we ready... we ready... for y'all..." Then, the 2-deep gets released. The Huskies are comin'...
