That how the story goes. But it's not true. KEA never got the quick hook. Because JC knew he wouldn't put up with it.
Before my time and can’t speak on that. But from what I hear KEA was the heart and soul of that squad emotionally.

I still remember when our best player Dyson got pulled 30 seconds into the game against John Wall’s Kentucky in MSG in 2010 though.

He didn't because he knew KEA was the straw that stirred the drink
There is no story only reality
You mention 1 obvious exception so everything else is false
And to think JC would shrink at pulling KEA - you just don't know JC at all

You said previously that you spaced through the good old BE era so maybe you saw 2 Jim Calhouns.
I have absolutely zero clue what you're referring to, please copy and paste or link whatever you're referring to that I apparently said

You know I’m happy to clarify and discuss these things.
Calhoun had his favorites that had a longer leash than others and there were plenty of guys that got buried on the bench under him. just going back to the final chapter of his coaching this board used to be up in arms about the lack of playing time for Giffey and whenever JC was on sick or leave and Blaney was coaching the first thing this board would talk about is how it meant Blaney would give him more minutes. I also remember this board not being happy with DeAndre Daniels' minutes his freshman year under JC.

Complaining about Nowell not playing is just bizarre at this point. I thought we were going to need him to be getting 10-15 minutes a game as the backup PG after Maui, but I was wrong. It's been over a month since we lost, the changes the staff made post Maui are working

Deandre Daniels actually started over Roscoe Smith his freshman year at the beginning of the year. He just didn’t produce, but he gave him his shot.

I don’t remember the Giffey situation. He played a lot in Maui (26 minutes against MSU and 33 against Kentucky) his freshman year. He also played 24 in the NC. Calhoun was certainly not afraid to use him and didn’t cap him when he needed him. Was he ever sick during that 2011 run? You may be referring to a different player.

Edit: Actually you’re probably talking about his sophomore year. There was a log jam at the 3-4 between Lamb, Smith, Daniels, Oriaki, and Olander all being there with Giffey. He in general had a lot of tough decisions on playing time that year.

I remember Marcus White never saw the floor until Blaney put him in and he had an impact. I have a vague recollection of Calhoun even admitting it that had been a mistake to not play him before that.

He had health issues in the 2011-2012 season

Regardless, I don’t think Giffey not playing because there was a talent log is equivalent to highly rated recruits not playing when there’s a need. Who were the players he played favorites with?

The ones I think of are obscure role players like Olander and Owkandu, both who we won championships with and Olander his freshman year!

Anecdotally, to me, it always seems he’s on the court when AM is running the point (and conversely guarding the point on defense). The team as a whole seems to struggle in those moments.
Didn't feel like working so was curious on your theory...

DePaul - 8 min, -9 (AM +3)
Butler - 6 min, -8 (AM -1)
Xavier - 20 min, 0 (AM -4)
Gonzaga - 19 min, -5 (AM -3)
Texas - 8 min, -3 (AM +2)
Baylor - 24 min, -4 (AM +13)
Dayton - 7 min, -11 (AM -3)
Colorado - 19 min, -4 (AM 0)
Memphis - 17 min, -2 (He scored 16 this game) (AM -3)

Incidentally, Jaylin was also -2 against TAMUC, a game we won by 35. Don't even know how that's statistically possible.

And for whoever asked, the Bleacher Report App has +/- in their box scores.

Enright was the worst. He got that offensive foul by being slower footed and putting his face on diarras shoulder.

Same with the charge on Liam as he beat him baseline with the dribble but Enright bodied him on the side and when Liam went up he fell sideways like he got hit by a train and they gave him the call. Awful call kids a slow nat.

I saw JC give Daniels a shot, to the ribs!

I just think Reed is too talented offensively to only play 14 minutes. He was able to get 7 rebounds in those limited minutes.
Pretty sure this was because of how we were defending the 3pt line, Johnson is just a lot faster recovering. Reed’s interior D wasn’t as critical based on DePaul’s play style and, thankfully, we have so many offensive pieces we didn’t need that either. Otherwise, yes I like more minutes generally for Reed.

Officiating was brutally bad! My only question. Is where was Reed in the second half. He looked dominating on 1st.
Given that our perimeter defense was forcing DePaul to drive to the basket and given that DePaul was playing without a legitimate center, Hurley assessed that a center with above average blocking skills was the best strategy in this game. So Samson received the most minutes in the second half. It was also the strategy to put in Ross more this game sacrificing offense for defense. Ross has the skill set to be a fantastic defender and needs time to hone these skills. He's also an above average rebounder and shot blocker.

These games are not only about resume building. They are games in which the coaching staff are working on deficiencies in the teams game to increase the probability of post season success even if it comes at the expense of the scores spread. JC did this as well.

You not only want to win the battle, you want to win the war. There is a reason that UConn is winning a national championship every four years since 1999.

Lol the obsession of guys needing to earn minutes in practice is weird. If a guy plays well during the game, what does it matter?

Nice win with some adversity regarding losing Liam and having Diarra in foul trouble. Down two primary ball handlers. 3 pt defense was better which is the big key to getting that defensive efficiency up. A nice part of the schedule here for the team to get some wins.

Watching the men and the women on 2 screens at the same time? Heaven!

The good -
  1. Loved Solo in the first half. Crashing boards, pushing breaks, great passes, then the threes starting falling. 7 3PM, tied for #2 for most threes made in a UConn game (Rashad, Bazz, Boat, Cam, Vital 2x)
  2. In the first 10 minutes we were running great stuff while DePaul was throwing themselves to the ground and praying for whistles. No surprise we eventually went up 20
  3. They tried punking Aidan Mahaney today, but he was up to the challenge. Box score isn't great but that was a good performance imo
  4. DePaul is the best 3pt shooting team in the conference and we held them to 3-12 while we were 14-29
Now the bad..
  1. DePaul flopped a lot, but we got outshot from the FT line 28-10, oh my goodness
  2. Get well soon Liam. You could see the instant impact on our offense when he went out, which led to..
  3. A REALLY bad first 10-12 min of the second half. How did that game get to single digits??
But at the end of the day Solo and AK nailed 3 threes in 1 minute to carry us home. Congrats to everyone who took -12.5 :)

Solo and Mahaney get game balls. Prayers for McNeeley. Gruesome injury. Hopefully it's not season ending.
What exactly did Aidan do to deserve anything but a darn seat on the bench??? He cannot defend the position. He gets picked on each and every time he is on the court. And that costs us much more than the 6 points I think he scored. What game were you watching? It does not matter, though, because Nowell is not playing this year, apparently. If we do not see him against DePaul when Diarra has 4 fouls, we are not seeing him again this year. And that means that Aidan is goin to have to figure it out. Because it will be ugly against better guards.

Point #3 on the good column tells me that you should only watch one game at a time. They didn't "try" to punk Aidan today. They made him their b---h all game long. He was up to the challenge? Some of you folks watch a game in an alternative universe. This kid CANNOT play at this level. I am dying on this hill. He is too slow to defend at this level. And we are not winning anything with him as the backup PG.

Not sure why we keep talking about Nowell - until Dan Hurley is ready to use him, continuing to talk about him isn’t going to send a telepathic epiphany to the staff. Got to hope the guys actually playing get better.

Solo shot the 3 at a blistering level today - made up+ for his deficiencies elsewhere. Not sure we can expect 7-9 often. He did have his best rebounding game of the year. He also had a few takes that were well timed, just looks afraid in traffic.

There were moments in the first half where the offense being run had glimpses of 2024, and that was encouraging. You can see the core guys starting to find a rythym.

The foul imbalance was hard to discern in this one as while the refs did look bad in spots, the imbalance has been consistent all year. Most of what went bad in this one was in a second half when we lost our best player and during foul trouble. Hard to be too critical of that. Our bench guys are not interchangeable with our starters, they’re there for breathers. There is a cliff in quality other than Reed when we hit our bench.

I see your point, and you are right. But the reason we keep talking about him is because the team's main (and perhaps only) weakness is perimeter defense.

It is but talking about it constantly isn’t going to motivate the staff to play him, have to appreciate who is playing and have faith in the staff. I’m pretty sure if he’s fully healthy and a value add he’ll be playing. At this point it’s been beaten to death.

Every. Single. Point of discussion on this board is beaten to death. That's the purpose of the board as I understand it to be. When we are no longer a sub-par perimeter defensive team we can stop talking about Aidan's defensive weakness. Until then, it seems relevant.

Solo has 1 assist in the last 6 games.

We've won all the games, so shrug.

Solo's job is to pad the assist totals of the other guys.

Ross and Stewart had no assists in 23 combined minutes, and Reed had no assists in 14 minutes (versus 4 assists for Samson). It will be nice if those guys can expand their games a bit.
