Death Storm 2.0

I had a broken spring for the drive idler arm. They split the unit and replaced the drive belt as well. My drive disk was okay. Labor was $175. Well worth fixing. Also with the old carb turn off the gas valve and run the engine dry after every use. I was using Stabil and thought that was enough but the carb was struggling with a deep snow. Stupid ethanol. Even with Stabil it causes trouble if not run often. Put in Seafoam and ran it today and it did much better.

That is ancient. I had a 2001 Ariens and it eventually died, but was super reliable. Never had a problem. This newer one is junk. Two winters in a row it died during a major storm. As I research fixes I see that these are now common problems. I blame the switch to Briggs & Stratton from the old Tecumsah engines. I'll try to fix it myself. I can't bring it anywhere and I just had it repaired last fall ($400).

Because we all knew it was coming. The problem in 78 is that people had no warning. Same with the big Connecticut Ice Storm in the 70s (which was worse than 78 for CT).

If you’re reasonably handy, a lot of folks just swap a predator engine from harbor freight onto it if their motor goes.

I'm not that handy. I do have the SHO engine, so power is fine. I'm hoping I am handy enough to change the V Belt, if I can find a place that has one.

Got my Ariens in 2006 from Home Depot. It's a smaller unit because my garage 20 years ago was tiny. Engine still runs great with occasional maintenance. It's been shaking this winter. I think it started after I ran over a frozen newspaper. It didn't break the pin, but it's not as steady. I was going to treat it to a nice service if I can find a place that does more than engine service. I used to have a guy that would pick up snowblowers/lawnmowers and service them, but he retired.

Napa should be able to measure and match it up if you have the old one. They don’t get hit quite as hard when the storms come because people done realize they’re interchangeable.
