I think there is a near 0% chance that our two portal guards are better than Adams next season (26-27). So it's a short term move and yes, Hurley can bring in a new freshman for next year so maybe it doesn't matter. But Adams was a very good fit for our system. In part, as an occasional Kansas fan, I watched them lose guys like Zuby chasing more experienced players. It didn't work out. Cost them Bidunga now too.

In the portal/nil era, not a soul cares if somebody will be our best anything in 2026-27. The player doesn’t. The coach doesn’t. The fans don’t. What matters is this season coming up. Think about it. If Hurley announced he was trying to build a team that would be ready to play for a national championship in 2027, not next season, this place would melt down. You can do that in the NBA but not in high level college basketball.
 
Everyone in 247’s top 50 is committed except decommits Acaden Lewis and Darius Adams. Teams are plugging roster gaps in the transfer portal by the hour

If Acaden and Darius want to get big minutes on high major teams, feels like they should find a home soon or else they risk picking a losing program at the last second?
 
I was surprised that Demary is still weighing his option to go pro. What happens if he does? I am sure there must be a contingency plan for this right? What if Adams holds off committing to another a team until July? Could he possibly end up recommitting to UConn if Demary decides to go pro? Sorry if this is a stupid question.
 
Prior to NIL you had to consider if you are a guard and you commit to a team and they have 1-2 guards ahead of you - what does this do to my playing time? Adams committed in October '24, and now with Demary, Smith, Ball, Mullins, that would be too many.

Now with NIL, you lose money if you ride the pine, so yeah, it's a bigger deal in the NIL world because now money is on the table.

Maryland lost Gillespie and Rice to the portal but brought in Isaiah Watts (11 PPG at Washington St), Andre Mills (redshirt freshman from A&M), David Coit (not great year at Kansas but Senior), and Myles Rice (10 PPG at Indiana)

Congrats to Adams for landing at a P5 and likely getting a big bag, but how many backcourt minutes are available year 1?

Will he be set up as well for years 2 and 3 there as he would have been here?

I guess we’ll see

I can’t blame a kid for wanting PT, and it’s become fashionable to blow off your commitment late if you don’t like your situation. Clearly winning doesn’t mean a thing.

This is gen is so soft. What message does that send a kid? Don’t honor or work, go path of least resistance with a losing team. I wish him well but also dont care how it turns out for him.

I don’t wish any harm on him, but I don’t care about him any more than I do kids at the other hundreds of schools. Just don’t have time for it

And Buzz is officially a nomad at this point
 
Who knows at this point, the game is so different. Potential development league move? Go get playing time, develop and we can potentially recruit him again for next year. Annual Free agency.

So he's still behind four guards?
 
Weird he went to Maryland where he would get < 10 min this year, and perhaps a more ~starting gig next year.

Howe different is that from being behind Demary (likely gone next year) and Smith (out of eligibility next year) or Ball (NBA next year?) and Mullins (could be OAD)...seems like UConn he would learn more this year, and have just as good a shot at major minutes next year.

What kid are you referring to here? Is Adams sending the message or receiving it? If he's sending it, who's getting it? Some fourth-grader?

He's going to a team and a coach with plenty of success, so not sure why so dismissive. He didn't end up wanting to come here. It happens.

A nomad who spent several years at each of his last 3 jobs so I guess the meaning of nomad is now flexible.
6 yrs at Marquette
5 years at V Tech
6 at Texas A&M
 
I hope the kid stays at Maryland for the duration now and doesn't keep chasing bigger bags of cash like Storr.

I know we are talking about a kid out of high school, but it feels like if the transfer portal doesn't change, it's the end of the Freemans, Donny Marhsalls, Giffeys and Whaleys. These guys became fan favorites for working, developing and waiting their turn and then making a impact on their teams.
A co-worker asked me why I was so happy to have AK announce he's back yesterday. He understood he won 2 rings, but he's a role player. I told him he's more than a role player, but it is about loyalty and loyalty is a two way street. If a program gets a guy who will 'bleed' for their program, that guy will have a loyal fan base for life.
 
One of the worst MCD AA performances I've seen in years. Kid was overmatched as Maryland will be if they are depending on him. I can't remember the last time I was less upset about a decommitment. Good luck to him and I hope he develops!

This was a mutual thing. It was in neither party's interest to continue the relationship. It was a very reasonable and adult thing to do that sets a good example.

Whether he was misranked or not, he comes from a town in which Hurley owns a summer home and is likely acquaintances with everyone in the basketball culture down there.

So there was a connection with Adams completely outside of his ranking/skills.

I'm not saying this is why he was offered since there have been plenty of people conencted to the program who haven't gotten an offer, but it probably played a small part.
