It's really only possible to get away with going small at the 4 if a combination of whoever you stick there and one or more of your guards are above average rebounders/defenders. This year we were so devastating in the three guard sets because Bazz and to a lesser extent Boat are both great rebounders for guards and Giffey and Daniels were great defenders and matured into rebounding forces. I'm speculating here, as we all are, but I'd say at this point D Ham will come in as a fantastic scorer and above average distributor but, as it is with a lot of freshman, his defense will need some work to adjust to the college game. I don't see him playing the 4 at all, and I doubt we see too much of Nolan/Brimah as it would clog the lane for us on offense and would be a bit of a liability on defense as well. Pray we get DD back and expect a lot of Facey/a possible grad transfer if we don't. Maybe Lubin comes along incredibly quickly, who knows. This is why while everyone is focused on our glut of guards and our perceived lack of big men when we're talking about recruiting it's really who's going to play the four for us going forward that really interests me.
If Nolan or Facey were to become a good medium range jumpshooter, it would open up a lot of possibilities with all the penetrating guards we have. I also expect that Brimah will be more of an offensive weapon next year.
