Here is an interesting factoid, which will be credible only if and to the extent that you believe Charlie Creme.
In his latest bracketology, completed in the early hours of March 7 after all of Sunday's games, he had Villanova (for the first time) as the "first team out" of the 68-team field. Previously they had been the second or third in line among those who were out of the tournament.
If that turns out to reflect the Selection Committee's view, then surely a Villanova win tonight would propel them into the tournament. Even a competitive, single-digit loss might do that, but that is more questionable. So I'm sure that the Wildcat coach will point that out to her team, giving them extra motivation for the game (if that really helps or is needed).
On the other hand, a non-competitive 20 to 30 point loss (which most of us hope for and expect) would probably seal their exclusion from the NCAA tournament.
By the way, Creme still has UConn as the 2 seed in Greensboro with the prospect of facing South Carolina in the Elite Eight. Would a 30-point, convincing win tonight change that? I would like to think so.
