Creighton Post Game

Did you think they had any chance of making a run once the lead got to double digits? They didnt lose by 30 because Dan Hurley took the foot off the gas. Both title teams lost to different teams with NBA talent on them. What is your definition of a bad team?
LOL!!! Yes ? Like when the game was literally TIED with 5 minutes to go in the first half ? My definition of a bad team ? Under .500, at least.

January was against a bunch of BE cupcakes and I think the eye test is what you want to apply here. Let's see what he does against StJ.
The goal post is constantly moving.

Taris won’t get credit until he averages 20, 15 and 5 on 75% shooting

Just look at Stewert and Ross. Hurley said he expects more out of them offensively and the both showed up. 9 deep with not much drop off.
I think a large part of why you saw with them being aggressive and making shots in the second half, was that they were playing stress-free because of the big lead.

What we need to see with both of them, more from Ross than Stewart, is to take and make those shots when the game is still in doubt.

That said, hopefully this gives them the confidence that they’re capable of doing this when the game is tight.

Obviously I don’t mean people literally hate him. But I think the critiques on him are a little over the top. He’s had a rough year health wise and has still been one of our most consistent players. He’s a victim of unrealistic expectations if people are disappointed with the season he has had so far. We haven’t lost a game he’s played in. And maybe undefeated had he played in that game.
Speaking of Tarris and injuries, play-by-play announcer said that his shoulder pops out and needs to be put back in place all the time. Did he have a shoulder separation at some point? That’s the first time I’ve heard or read anything about him having an issue with his shoulder.

It's interesting, because if you go to Evan Maya, he's graded fairly high, but because of his defense. 13th highest graded player on D. Michigan has the first THREE in Mara, Yaxel, Morez.

Here is a part of the CBS Sports College Basketball show with Adam Finkelstein and Isaac Trotter talking about the UConn offense. Trotter makes a case for being bullish on the offense and says buy stock now and Finkelstein agrees. Hopefully they're right.

The thing about Tarris just as a baseline in every game he plays for us, and it should not be overlooked, is that we own the post on both ends when Tarris is on the floor. Additionally on offense, his screening, movement, and passing are vital to creating space and open looks. Defensively, again, he owns the post; opposing teams have a much harder time with him defending down low. Top five defense has everything to do with Tarris owning that ten feet around the basket.

It gets taken for granted. He’s not Shaq in 96. But I thought we knew that.

@Nova and St Johns x2 will do that. I don't expect an easy game to end Feb hosting Shall either.

I do have faith in Pitino setting up a good game plan for Hurley to learn from (and I mean that in a positive way, you only get better by being forced to adjust) but Pitino doesn't exactly target things the way Mac does. Pitino is a better coach but the two emphasize different things stylistically.

Nova will be a good game but I'm not sure they will tell us anything new about the team.

He won’t throw anything at Hurley he hasn’t seen before. Maybe the players can learn.

It’s not interesting. He’s had a damn good season. Full Stop.

It’s only interesting when UConn fans try to pretend he hasn’t played well

Cupcake is East Texas A&M. Providence stinks, but they beat SJU. Ergo, not close to a cupcake. SH not close either
There's a group out there that defines "cupcake" as any unranked team who UConn beat. I ignore that nonsense.

I agree. He’s averaged 14,8 and 2 in the month of January on 64% shooting. And his “lack of rebounding” showed itself with him have 11 or more rebs in 3 of those games. Our defense efficiency also has been markedly better with him on the floor. It’s all narrative driven at this point. Him and Silas were almost single handedly responsible for our turnaround on defense this year.

And his numbers would be stupid good if he could makes ft haha

If this is C+ Taris than what were your expectations lmao
Hurley's stated expectation for Reed was that he would be the best big man in the country. He's not that yet.

Tarris has been frustrating only because we have seen and know how good he can be -- he has been sloppy of recent with the fouling, he should be better on the glass, his free throw shooting needs to be 10-15% better to not be a serious liability, he needs to do more to gain better positioning in the post, and he needs to improve on his vision when doubled in the post.

He has shown at times he can do all of these things, but it isn't consistent. The good news is Reibe has been ascending, but this team will not reach the great heights we think it can with him not being more consistent. It can't just be Reibe or just Tarris. They need both of them to put forth a quality 40 minutes combined.

So we aren’t happy with his production because he isn’t the best big man in the country?

I’m dumbfounded. His ft shooting hasn’t been consistent. That’s true. But his rebounding has been consistent all year. The numbers back it up. Last game he got crap for doing exactly what you’re asking(passing out of double teams).

His averages and advanced metrics make it impossible for him to be as inconsistent as yall are painting him to be. He’s been consistently good all year. Just say yall wanted a player of the year candidate. He doesn’t have to be that to be what we need.

His defensive presence and his interior presence along side Silas is why are defense is where it is. Are defensive efficiency improves dramatically when he plays. Did you forget what our rebounding looked like when he was out? Add all of that to the fact we haven’t lost a game he’s played in this season, Lmao. He’s the new punching bag.

No - lot's of cupcakes.
So you even enjoy watching UCONN games? I mean we all can pick apart games. Fact is that last three seasons we would have at least one more L than this season. We are not perfect- not playing perfect but think back to the days of hoping for a 20 win season so we had a chance to make the NCAA tournament -and try to enjoy at least some of it.

Tarris was being doubled for a good chunk of the game and to his credit, he played inside-outside ball and found the shooter. But I have to agree, when he is not being doubled he should be able to Sanogo his way to the basket and either draw the foul (and hit the damn FTs) or get the bucket.

I like the set they ran for Ross for the very last 3 pointer of the game. Perhaps Danny realized he needs to run sets for this kid to get him open looks rather than just say "go out there and find a way to score." There was no hesitation - zero. He needs those confidence boosters. We ran this set for you. Nail it.

He was doubled the entire game. On every first dribble they sent a double. The game before….he scored 20

At Creighton Tarris had a few put backs that were awesome, key rebounds (yes fumbled holding onto his first) and overall had a good game.

Some of those double teams against him he has fought through for a hoop in prior games and this seemed like one he could but chose to pass.

He will have a different role vs St Johns on Zuby but likely similar vs X.

tarris has his problems but he's also a guy that's capable of being dominant. the vision is to play him and a bunch of shooters to create impossible dilemmas. the staff have been miracle workers with him if you just look at the improvement he's made since the michigan days.

basically they are trying to micromanage him, fly by wire. if you leave tarris to make his own decisions he's kind of fragile and can go back to the high turnover guy from michigan, but restrict his options and he can be effective.

Tarris’s problem is that he loves to keep the ball low and go under and up with his shots. Adama kept the ball high and had that hook that was deadly. That’s how Tarris ends up with ugly attempts and turnovers
