Creighton Post Game

Some news source (I believe the Courant) wrote this morning that he's still battling nagging injuries.

We have ONE loss. Some need to give this kid a break, some need to relax a little and some need to trust our staff a bit more than they do.

I agree. He’s averaged 14,8 and 2 in the month of January on 64% shooting. And his “lack of rebounding” showed itself with him have 11 or more rebs in 3 of those games. Our defense efficiency also has been markedly better with him on the floor. It’s all narrative driven at this point. Him and Silas were almost single handedly responsible for our turnaround on defense this year.

And his numbers would be stupid good if he could makes ft haha

If this is C+ Taris than what were your expectations lmao
January was against a bunch of BE cupcakes and I think the eye test is what you want to apply here. Let's see what he does against StJ.

Creighton is not a "bad team". They're an average team with a great coach and an amazing home court advantage. As the broadcast noted, both recent championship teams lost at Creighton
I did not say they had a bad coach or a bad home court. I said its a bad team. Theyre 12-10 and 6-5 in a weak BE. Did you at any point last night seriously think they had a chance to win? Did you think they had any chance of making a run once the lead got to double digits? They didnt lose by 30 because Dan Hurley took the foot off the gas. Both title teams lost to different teams with NBA talent on them. What is your definition of a bad team?

Reed continues to underperform. This team will only go as far as Reed takes them in March. Danny needs to see improvement in his play!
Maybe true, but stating this right after the Creighton game is comically bad timing. Reed didn’t play particularly well, Reibe played real well, the smaller fellas were scoring and rebounding, and we won by 30 pts.

When you're shooting it the way we were, Tarris on O didn't really matter. I'm just not sure Hurley is all that invested in Tarris as a core offensive option. He's simply too unpredictable, even in good matchups. I tend to think he'd rather get the offense humming in ways that looked more like yesterday. We are all chomping at the bit hoping Tarris can flash that A game (like PC last year), but there are simply too many things he doesn't do to be that guy. Doesn't seal well, does flash with urgency to make himself a big entry, sets up too far away from the basket at times, overdribbles, overpauses. Rarely does he work his man overplaying him to get the lob towards the rim. There just isn't a lot of chemistry in the post with him and the guards. He is miles from Adama that way. Sure his numbers are similar, but Tarris seems to get a lot of his points in very different ways.
Reed leads the Big East in fg %.

LOL!!! Yes ? Like when the game was literally TIED with 5 minutes to go in the first half ? My definition of a bad team ? Under .500, at least.

Just look at Stewert and Ross. Hurley said he expects more out of them offensively and the both showed up. 9 deep with not much drop off.
I think a large part of why you saw with them being aggressive and making shots in the second half, was that they were playing stress-free because of the big lead.

What we need to see with both of them, more from Ross than Stewart, is to take and make those shots when the game is still in doubt.

That said, hopefully this gives them the confidence that they’re capable of doing this when the game is tight.

Obviously I don’t mean people literally hate him. But I think the critiques on him are a little over the top. He’s had a rough year health wise and has still been one of our most consistent players. He’s a victim of unrealistic expectations if people are disappointed with the season he has had so far. We haven’t lost a game he’s played in. And maybe undefeated had he played in that game.
Speaking of Tarris and injuries, play-by-play announcer said that his shoulder pops out and needs to be put back in place all the time. Did he have a shoulder separation at some point? That’s the first time I’ve heard or read anything about him having an issue with his shoulder.

Taris won’t get credit until he averages 20, 15 and 5 on 75% shooting
It's interesting, because if you go to Evan Maya, he's graded fairly high, but because of his defense. 13th highest graded player on D. Michigan has the first THREE in Mara, Yaxel, Morez.

Here is a part of the CBS Sports College Basketball show with Adam Finkelstein and Isaac Trotter talking about the UConn offense. Trotter makes a case for being bullish on the offense and says buy stock now and Finkelstein agrees. Hopefully they're right.

The thing about Tarris just as a baseline in every game he plays for us, and it should not be overlooked, is that we own the post on both ends when Tarris is on the floor. Additionally on offense, his screening, movement, and passing are vital to creating space and open looks. Defensively, again, he owns the post; opposing teams have a much harder time with him defending down low. Top five defense has everything to do with Tarris owning that ten feet around the basket.

It gets taken for granted. He’s not Shaq in 96. But I thought we knew that.

@Nova and St Johns x2 will do that. I don't expect an easy game to end Feb hosting Shall either.

I do have faith in Pitino setting up a good game plan for Hurley to learn from (and I mean that in a positive way, you only get better by being forced to adjust) but Pitino doesn't exactly target things the way Mac does. Pitino is a better coach but the two emphasize different things stylistically.

Nova will be a good game but I'm not sure they will tell us anything new about the team.

He won’t throw anything at Hurley he hasn’t seen before. Maybe the players can learn.

It’s not interesting. He’s had a damn good season. Full Stop.

It’s only interesting when UConn fans try to pretend he hasn’t played well
