Creighton Post Game

What stat site has the amount of possessions for each game. I'm also curious how soon in the shot clock we shot the ball last night. Seems like we were trying to play quicker last night. I've been calling for a quicker pace for a bunch of reasons and was really pleased with the way the offense looked like night.

The last two games we came out of the gate with more urgency. But I don't think we maintained it for long.

As well as we played overall, one concern is that we still have trouble getting the ball into the post in positions that Reed can dominate. Some of it is Reed (he got called for an offensive foul try to open a passing lane), some of it is on the defense (scheming to make it hard), some of it is on the other players (not finding the right entry pass angles) and some of it is on the coaching staff (drawing up plays to open up entry passes). They do seem to do well with this on plays out of time outs but the team struggles to duplicate it throughout the game. Anyone else seeing what I'm seeing?

Bart Torvik does, here's last night's box score. 59 possessions so we didn't play any faster, just extremely efficient. We average 65 per game which is 304th in the country so there were actually less possessions than usual last night

So much mojo in this win:
  • Entering this game, UConn lost 4 of its last 5 in Omaha. Last night's knockout punch renders that previous statistic obsolete.
  • Outside of cupcakes, this was the biggest beat down of the season, and it was on the road.
  • Anyone else notice the confidence in both Jaylin Stewart and Jayden Ross' shots? Their on-ball aura was getting me giddy.
Of course that figure is now obsolete. Now they have lost four out of their last six

When our shooters are hitting three pointers at the rate they did last night- 30+ shots put up. The need for Reed to dominate in the paint becomes much less problematic. Long rebounds on misses, etc. Can he be smarter on fouling on plays away from the paint? Of course. Another teaching moment for Hurley in film sessions. Would much rather have Reed's A game against Zubi on Friday at MSG than a blow out win in Omaha with our offense-defense- boards-bench synching at the same time.
I'm looking forward to that one and seeing if Tarris can continue to dominate him.

I agree with most of what you said, but I don't think Reed was subpar. Reed was very good and above par as he had a huge impact on the game. He has to, and I mean has to stop with the silly reach in fouls, especially the ones 40 feet away from the hoop.
I was yelling at him (through the TV) for the 3rd foul. It was like a slight hip check 30 feet from the basket for no reason.

We’ll call it even for the comically bad offensive foul called on Karaban with about 5 to go in the first half. The one where he was shielding Graves on his back and Graves flopped like Tyson had just clocked him in the head despite Karaban’s elbow being in his chest.
When they showed the replay it was very obviously a flop. The refs bought it. Did the ref on the baseline call it? Because he couldn't see through Karaban to see what Graves did. He just saw Graves go down like he took a right hook from Tyson. Graves is lucky he didn't get a T for it.

I did watch it.

How does that win look on UConn's NCAA Tournament resume?
The Michigan State exhibition game has no impact on the resume, and we don't know about how the coaches' different priorities regarding & even within exhibition games affected scoring margins.

That said, we did watch the Huskies jump all over Michigan and then have the Spartans come back. And we witnessed a similar pattern in the BYU game.

Last night, we saw the first half margin swell to 11 at the end, and then we enjoyably watched the margin grow and grow some more.

That's what we've all wanted, and it's what Dan Hurley said he wanted. I hope it continues.

If nothing else, after a number of close games since the new year, the team finished January undefeated, with a large-margin win against an opponent that has been notably difficult to beat on the road.

I'm concerned that the team only had 7 free throw attempts and converted on fewer than half of them last night.

I'd strongly prefer to see more attacking at the rim, and more fouls drawn, especially by Demary, who I wish would have at least 5 FTs attempts every game. I also want Silas clocking 30 minutes per game, which necessitates him not excessively fouling.

Reed just doesn't react well to everyday basketball situations. Sadly most of his errors by omission or commission should have been ingrained reactions, that sadly he doesn't, and probably won't have. Great talent, good competitor, his body just doesn't get wired with drilling. Whatever they did last year at this time with Tarris, they need to do it again. He was great at Tourney time last year.
Perfect description

What I like about this team the most as well as previous teams is that we have a basketball culture that has been established. No whiners, no head angers, no prima donners. These guys get after loose balls like rats go after food. 0 quit. It is a great testament to Hurley and his staff as well as the types of kids who can thrive in his program.

When you're shooting it the way we were, Tarris on O didn't really matter. I'm just not sure Hurley is all that invested in Tarris as a core offensive option. He's simply too unpredictable, even in good matchups. I tend to think he'd rather get the offense humming in ways that looked more like yesterday. We are all chomping at the bit hoping Tarris can flash that A game (like PC last year), but there are simply too many things he doesn't do to be that guy. Doesn't seal well, does flash with urgency to make himself a big entry, sets up too far away from the basket at times, overdribbles, overpauses. Rarely does he work his man overplaying him to get the lob towards the rim. There just isn't a lot of chemistry in the post with him and the guards. He is miles from Adama that way. Sure his numbers are similar, but Tarris seems to get a lot of his points in very different ways.
Hurr durr numbers are the same… but… hurr…. DUUUURRRRRR

I truly don’t understand the Taris hate.
No one hates him - a bit frustrated. Numbers are decent but don’t tell the whole story, rebounding per minutes is down. I felt like he’s played his C+ game most of the year.

Obviously I don’t mean people literally hate him. But I think the critiques on him are a little over the top. He’s had a rough year health wise and has still been one of our most consistent players. He’s a victim of unrealistic expectations if people are disappointed with the season he has had so far. We haven’t lost a game he’s played in. And maybe undefeated had he played in that game.

Yeah because people were calling him a lottery pick before the season which was never happening under any circumstances

Expectations for Tarris were first team BE. Kid with his size mismatch in most games should command more presence is all. His rebounding rate is down this year for whatever reason.

Offensively tbh it didn't look like we played any differently than we usually do. Only 2 major differences that I could see. 1) Tarris made good decisions and passes out of doubles and more importantly 2) the open shots went in this time

I agree. He’s averaged 14,8 and 2 in the month of January on 64% shooting. And his “lack of rebounding” showed itself with him have 11 or more rebs in 3 of those games. Our defense efficiency also has been markedly better with him on the floor. It’s all narrative driven at this point. Him and Silas were almost single handedly responsible for our turnaround on defense this year.

And his numbers would be stupid good if he could makes ft haha

If this is C+ Taris than what were your expectations lmao
