Creighton Post Game

Parcells?

Not having Kalkbrenner is a massive difference. In the past, McDermott was always able to draw up an early play to get a very quick foul on our center, Kalk in drop coverage would cause issues for our offense, that he was a decent three point shooter led to either him having an open three or our big leaving the lane wide open.

McDermott was able to utilize what Kalk was able to do to its fullest advantage against us (and somehow they would have players shooting better than Steph Curry for one game), that's gone.
Got me - was typing ahead of my awakeness - Bellicheck!

But they were shadow of their previous teams last night - some of that is coaching IMO.

Blowouts are fun but against a bad team lets pump the breaks a bit. Lets hope this is a sign of this team starting to run on all cylinders and this performance because more the norm. Reed needs to clean up the poor fouls and i have a couple other nitpicks but this team is well on its way to having a fun run through the BE Tourney and a #1 seed in the Tourney. As legit a chance at the title as anyone no doubt.
Creighton is not a "bad team". They're an average team with a great coach and an amazing home court advantage. As the broadcast noted, both recent championship teams lost at Creighton

called a foul on Creighton, not sure what the refs were looking at, it was clearly a foul on Smith
He wasn't bearhugging anyone. He had his back to the ball and the Creighton player just PUSHED him from the three point line into the lane for the rebound. Blatant foul

Those Creighton teams had Alexander, Kalk & the kid the Celts drafted. 23 team got to an Elite 8. They were in a different stratosphere. 3 kids drafted versus nothing even close on this team.

That doesn't make this a "bad" team, nor does it change how hard it is to win on the road, especially in that arena

It's a pretty bad team - the two players they were counting on the most aren't there. To offer some perspective, they're below Cuse in KenPom. The player quality is pretty bad.

I don’t really know what point I’m trying to get across and I’m probably going to contradict myself a few times but I don’t really know what to make of this Creighton team right now

McDermott is an amazing coach. We know this and it’s not debatable at all

Creighton has 30 PPG of B10 transfers in Dix and Freeman. 36 PPG of mid major transfers in Graves and Harper. A returner who stepped up (Jasen Green) and a transfer underclassman that is tearing up BE play (Swartz). The guys around them are a 6’10 stretch 4 junior, a 4* freshman, and a 22 year second year former European pro

That is a REALLY good roster. It's no Trey Alexander/Steven Ashworth/Ryan Kalkbrenner roster, but it's still really good. So why are they bad? I don’t believe that all of these actually just suck. Some fault has to lie with the coach who can’t make the pieces work

Did they just get their NIL and not care anymore? Is the locker room lost? Did they just strike out on multiple portal guys?

The Marquette and Providence losses are the ones that are closing the door. No shame losing to UConn right now although a 30pt massacre at home doesn’t inspire much confidence moving forward

I hope McDermott doesn’t retire on this bad note

Owen Freeman turned out to be the biggest portal bust in the country, their most talented player Jackson McAndrews went down for the season and they're unathletic and don't play defense.

Really not sure you can qualify talent that way. Iowa wasn't a very good team last year. Mid major transfers are a crapshoot (Mahaney).

They have no athletecism at all. They don't have much of a true center or a PG. Last year, they had defined roles with Ashworth at PG, Kalk & Neal. Neal gave them some of that on ball athletecism this team doesn't have. They don't have one mismatch advantage on the floor this year.

It's a poorly constructed roster with no athletes. I'm not even sure McAndrew would have made them that much better. Nice player, but he's not changing the makeup all that much. He's basically a shoot and catch kid. This feels like the worst Creighton team in a long time.

I think that Kalkbrenner was kryptonite to Hurley's offensive system, in particular the hard hedge.

I was a little disappointed in the game last night. I just assumed the game was going to be another dramatic thriller. I can understand why Tom fell asleep. I managed to stay awake for this late game by taking a two hour pregame nap. So glad I did!!!!

What stood out to me most last night is the assertiveness of our bench, especially Stew. Was wonderful to see that.

Kalk was a problem for anyone - he was the BEDPOY how many times? NDPOY.

The BE lost a lot of special talent last year that hasn't been replenished. Dixon, Kalk, Jones, Sorber, Swain/Conwell, Luis. This year, beyond Zubi, not a lot of standout talent. We had multiple AA's in the BE last year. Overall it's been a significant talent drain losing that class. Swain & Conwell will likely be all league in the SEC & ACC this year.

Not only up to 9, but we beat the three teams ahead of us: Michigan State (8), Florida (7), and Illinois (6). As much as Iove metrics, sometimes there are shortfalls.
We need to stop mentioning the Michigan State game. It was an exhibition. Who knows if that played out like a regular season game and what the coaches were trying to do. It doesn't count so I don't even think of it as a real win.

Great win - everything was clicking. Ross/Stew were 5-6 from the floor. Shooting was electric. Mullins & Ball found their spots and shot with conviction. This was the game we were waiting for to reinstill confidence in the fanbase.
What's Greggy Pooh going to say about this game? I guess I don't really care but since you always listen to him I figured I'd ask.

It seems you did not watch the game against Michigan State because it was clear that both teams were treating it as a regular season game.

I don't care how they treated it, it was an exhibition game and has absolutely zero weight.

Don't know, they usually come out with their reviews on Monday. My guess is he'll be back onboard the Husky wagon. Those guys swing like pendalum to keep the content going.
