Creighton Post Game

Looked more like the team we thought we were capable of being at the beginning of the season. The Juniors played well in the same game. Friendly rims for our three point shooters (finally). Great bench mojo heading into next week's games. Keep stacking wins.

Alot of people complained about Reed tonight.
He seems to have flashbacks to his youth when he was a point guard. Get down into the paint and dominate the boards and shotblocking.

The team made that extra pass tonight and it mattered. Even Reed was dishing the ball for good looks.

This is the team’s B+ offense game. Out of the January slump and on to Xavier for a home W before the game at the Garden

2-0 this week and we are even closer to a Big East Reg Title

called a foul on Creighton, not sure what the refs were looking at, it was clearly a foul on Smith
I am mixed on that one... the Creighton player just kept coming into him - not so much going around him but literally moving through him.

Would it normally be called a foul of Smith?

Yes.

Do I have a problem with it called on Creighton or if it was called on us, no.

Defensive players barely touch offensive players / whistles all day long. Actually kind of loved the call - refs were good last night all around.

Most of the crowd started heading for the exits with seven minutes left after a 3-pointer from Jayden Ross pushed the Huskies’ lead to 27 points.

The announcers, early in the game, said the fans out there never leave early. Apparently, the Huskies love shooting against a pink background! The arena looked great in full color.

Humbling moment for Creighton as a program.

What surprised me the most is the lack of an organized game plan. Greg M looked like Parcels without T Brady (-Kalk/Ash) LOL…. I am sure they will get better but that was certainly one loss that will stick w/ them for awhile..

Reed definably had some Hopps last night. His put back of a miss was way above the rim, an area he has not been in much this season. Good for him. Was this a pickle juice affect?

If you had told me in October, or even in November or December, that UConn would go 8-0 in January, I would have called you a prankster. Winning @Shall and @Creighton as well as vs Nova, all three, is special, no doubt. I also thought Marq would be way better.

So much mojo in this win:
  • Entering this game, UConn lost 4 of its last 5 in Omaha. Last night's knockout punch renders that previous statistic obsolete.
  • Outside of cupcakes, this was the biggest beat down of the season, and it was on the road.
  • Anyone else notice the confidence in both Jaylin Stewart and Jayden Ross' shots? Their on-ball aura was getting me giddy.

I will say one thing, I am a bit disappointed not to have a good Creighton team because a good Creighton team with their coach always does a great job of exploiting and showing UConn it's weaknesses. Hurley then has done a great job of adjusting and covering those weaknesses. I'm not saying I want a loss, but there wasn't a ton to learn from for the coaching staff in terms of adjustments it can make.
@Nova and St Johns x2 will do that. I don't expect an easy game to end Feb hosting Shall either.

Hurdle 1 was beating Villanova. Hurdle 2, road win in Omaha. Hurdle 3 is the first St. Johns game coming up this week in MSG. This game suggests that the coaching is getting them prepared for the February stretch run.

The defense was solid, the shooting by everyone much more what was expected. Bench contributions from everyone - Stewart, Ross, Reibe and Smith. Depth that wears on the opponent. Ball, Karaban, Mullins and Demary were who we thought they were. Only Reed was sub-par, but he will get it going.

Creighton isn’t this year what they usually are, but they have talent. It wasn’t just a solid win, we made them look less than they are on their home floor. Optimism reigns.

In fairness he played at the top of the key for like 70% of the time. Weird because he had an advantage of size but gameplan was to hedge and set high screens I guess

Hurdle 1.5 was winning at Seton Hall

Great win - everything was clicking. Ross/Stew were 5-6 from the floor. Shooting was electric. Mullins & Ball found their spots and shot with conviction. This was the game we were waiting for to reinstill confidence in the fanbase.

Green and Freeman were playing 10 feet off him in the paint. That let him set screens Creighton had no chance to defend with only 1 defender on the ball

Parcells?

Not having Kalkbrenner is a massive difference. In the past, McDermott was always able to draw up an early play to get a very quick foul on our center, Kalk in drop coverage would cause issues for our offense, that he was a decent three point shooter led to either him having an open three or our big leaving the lane wide open.

McDermott was able to utilize what Kalk was able to do to its fullest advantage against us (and somehow they would have players shooting better than Steph Curry for one game), that's gone.

We should have fed the bear for higher pct shots. Reed without Green (and Freeman) on him is too big a mismatch for Creighton to handle. Could have been dunk city.

Not second guessing the plan just seems weird not to exploit a mismatch down low. Idk he fouled out as well but that was not on a reach in…I need coffee

I think that would have worked, but I'd say our offense was working pretty well last night

When you're shooting it the way we were, Tarris on O didn't really matter. I'm just not sure Hurley is all that invested in Tarris as a core offensive option. He's simply too unpredictable, even in good matchups. I tend to think he'd rather get the offense humming in ways that looked more like yesterday. We are all chomping at the bit hoping Tarris can flash that A game (like PC last year), but there are simply too many things he doesn't do to be that guy. Doesn't seal well, does flash with urgency to make himself a big entry, sets up too far away from the basket at times, overdribbles, overpauses. Rarely does he work his man overplaying him to get the lob towards the rim. There just isn't a lot of chemistry in the post with him and the guards. He is miles from Adama that way. Sure his numbers are similar, but Tarris seems to get a lot of his points in very different ways.

Creighton did a great job denying Reed the ball. Many of our turnovers were trying to force Reed the ball. On other possessions we simply couldn't get him the ball. That is why we had so many wide open threes. We did a great job of making them pay for the decision.

and when Reed did get the ball in the paint, they double teamed him right away.

Creighton was never letting Taris beat them last night. They sent a double on the dribble every time he got the ball in the post. He made good decisions out of the doubles. Taris played fine offensively imo. It was the dumb fouls away from the basket that soured his night . We are talented enough to where if a team takes out Taris we can beat them with everyone else.

Okay, so we ended up winning big, but was this really a blowout?
I think the pink unis made it look worse than it was.
