Jackson played 28 minutes. Newton 26.

This team will go as far as Hawk, Sanogo, and Newton will take them.

Newton needs to be given the keys to the car. And frankly Jackson makes it more challenging against certain defensive schemes for him to drive.

Specifically, they play drop on almost all their pick and roll coverage. That means Newton is looking at Kalk as he turns the corner. On top of that Jackson’s defender is in the lane helping.
Newton in 26 minutes had 2 points 4 assists and zero rebounds, I wouldn’t give that ghost the keys to my lawn mower. He only had one foul, and he played only 26, because he couldn’t stay with Nembhard.

The problem lies between his ears.
He has no shot. Why hasn’t he developed a Jump shot? This has nothing to do with his lack of confidence. No one would be confident shooting the ball if they had his form from three and the ft line. Having to take an awkward runner from 15ft is embarrassing. He has to practice proper form and shoot 1k true jump shots a day during the summer. Don’t get it.

He’s the reason why Newton had trouble doing anything today.

Cheat off of Jackson…..jam up Newton or double Sanogo.

There’s literally no scenario where Jackson shooting a jumpshot should be considered a good option.

Not sure how anyone can watch this game and wonder why Newton wasn’t very good. What’s his strength? Getting to the hole right. And where was Andres defender all day and I mean all day? He was in the middle looking to make a play, the smart play which was either double down on Sanogo to make the interior passes tougher or stop penetration or at least assist in stopping it. The reality is we should have been trying to get a few more open looks for Alex but we ran nothing.

The problem today was the inability to adjust the dare that McDermott threw at the Huskies. Basically we have zero concern that AJ can beat us so find another way. We didn’t, nothing new!

After watching todays game I have come to the conclusion this team will continue to have droughts and be limited offensively as long as andre Jackson plays a lot of minutes. Won’t consistently be able to beat good teams when it’s 5 on 4 offensively. Schierman essentially played safety the entire game defensively.

.-.
It's not the players' fault. Those 4-5 straight possessions of AJ getting sucked into the "Andre Island" defense and taking bad shots (i.e., anything other than a layup/dunk at this point) or making bad passes/turnovers were the difference in the game. After once or twice, Hurley should have recognized what McDermott was doing (successfully) and replaced him with the fifth shooter. AJ also did some bad gambling on D with Schierman earlier in the game but he was bringing a lot more to the table than he was taking away at that point in terms of rebounding, effort, etc.
Excellent point. Those are the possessions that lost us the game. A laughable post up in the lane & 2:awkward looking 3 pointers, and game over. Right then is when Hurley should've subbed him out or changed strategies. Teams are gonna dare Dre to beat them, and frankly I'm doubting that he'll come through.
Hurley has to put him in position to succeed not just sit back and watch the same thing happen over and over again. Adjust for gosh sake!

Dribble , dribble, everyone stand around, one on on while tightly guarded, no one crashes the boards on offensive shots and UConn scores 53 points. Garbage, bad mens league offense!!! Top 25? That’s a joke!!!
Newton has open shot , slows up and waits for defender and shoots an out of sync shot hoping for a foul.
Why play Hawkins if his confidence to shoot wide open 8-20 footer is non existent???
Who’s coaching this mess?

I'm not sure AJ will be able improve his shooting this summer all of a sudden. I just don't think it's in his cards. He is not going to the NBA after this season - I think most can agree on that. So get ready for more 4 on 5 offense next season, unless Hurley can solve the AJ Dilemma.
I hope he works on a full scoring game instead of just a three point shot.

A couple sequences decided this game. It was really lost with around 9-10 minutes left in the second half. We had a 3-1 break and all Diarra had to do was make the simple pass to Clingan for a dunk. Then we had 3 straight possessions with a bunch of chances and no execution. We should've went up by 5 points there and we remained down by 1.

The other sequence that decided the game was under 7 minutes left Jackson makes a turnover with nobody guarding him trying to force it into Sanogo when Adama was right next to him, Jackson fouls right away on the other end, then Jackson shoots an airball 3. This all happens with Alexander on the bench.

Creighton didn't score a field goal for 7 minutes and their best offensive player was on the bench and they extended the lead to 6.

Karaban makes a huge three to keep us in the game only down 3 and then Jackson bricks a floater and bricks a wide open 3.

We know we're terrible in close games and terrible on the road, these are the sequences where we should be grabbing a hold of the game. When it's a one possession game with a minute or two left, our chances of winning are incredibly low.

I love Jackson as a person and love some of the things he can do on the court but he really hurts this team on offense, when the opponent can back 10 feet off a player the entire game you're playing 4 on 5 basketball on the offensive end and it makes life really difficult for the 4 guys who have scoring ability.
That thought in a nutshell!

Fixed

hard to consistently get to the rim when whoever is guarding jackson just camps in the lane

Collectively was the worst game we played, enough blame to go around. However, the offensive funk that AJ is something I have never seen before.
Creighton played a man to man with no one guarding AJ, no one. He literally was at the three point line with his man standing 18 ft away in the lane. His shooting is horrible against zero defense. Could you imagine his shooting % if he was guarded? He needs to sit until he gets some semblance of confidence and shot.

Crazy Creighton stat- Alexander only on the floor for 23 minutes - 10 minutes less than Sanogo but scores the same amount of points ... 17. UConn should be have been able to outscore Creighton when Alexander on the bench

St. John’s game was a worse loss.

You said two things... It was collectively the worst game we played, then you blamed it all on one player. Nonsense.

Why don't we all look at the $4mil a year in suits we have standing/sitting on the sideline? This team is stacked. It's uneven performance is a direct reflection of the lack of leadership it has. These players are the same guys that have ripped teams to shreds. It's not them, they haven't forgotten how to ball. Whether it's not playing the guy with the highest ceiling on the team, or hanging Andre out to dry (when the whole world knows what will happen), there is a seriously maddening issue going on here. Why would a coach continually put one of his guys in that position? It's compounding the problem and it's been reported to be completely destroying his confidence, and certainly potentially his basketball career.

Yeah, but the other players have an extra man they have to beat. AJ has NONE.

Don't understand why any team would bother guarding AJax, completely sag off him and leave him open and it's gonna muck up UConn's offense. I'd imagine that's going to be the gameplan for opposing teams here on out
It already has been

Collectively the worst game we played…really?

People complained about our defense when teams broke down our guards and shot near 50%. Our defense was really good today. Creighton shot 39% and Alexander made 3 last second on the shot clock baskets. Without those shots we win the game.

If we play defense like today I like our chances in the remaining games and tournament games, especially on neutral court in tournaments.

Just had a bad shooting game. Everyone below season shooting percentage, not just AJ. Sanogo had a good game but was well below 50% from the field like everyone.

Would have been nice to win this game but our recently improved defense and shooting at normal percentage going forward bodes well. There were positives to be taken from today’s game.

He can't just learn how by himself- he needs a shooting coach who knows proper technique, that coach can observe and give him corrections and feedback.

How about someone on the staff tells Jackson DO NOT SHOOT THE BALL outside of 5ft.!!!!

Or ride the pine…
5’? Too far. Nothing but 2-handed dunks. I’ll let a one-hander slide IF it goes in. They threw away at least 4 points today trying for SportsCenter Top 10 plays. And they get to stay in the game! JC would have escorted them to the tunnel.

We are a good team..with a good record…like every team… we need to get hot going into March

As frustrating as tonight was, I hope we run into Creighton in the BET. Of the top teams, I think we match up well with them and I don't think the team is scared of them anymore.

Please don’t compare others shooting averages for this game with “not just AJ”. They are being defended, he’s not. If every other Husky has Scheirman guarding them 20 feet away their shooting averages would be better I promise.

Then you try a few minutes of zone if you are concerned about Newton defensively. It also allows DC and AS to play at the same time.

Or when Alexander got his 4th put Hawkins on him defensively and stay in man.

Either way there is no game ever that I want Jackson playing more minutes than Newton.

And Newton a no show today after the triple double.
This was my biggest frustration of the game. Newton is a terrific shooter, scorer, but how often did he pass up a shot and passed to a wide open Jackson who admittedly lacks confidence in his own shot. Newton needs to shoot the 3 when open, drive to the basket when not open, for an assist to our bigs, a layup or to get fouled. He has been effective in the past when he aggressively looks to score, but dribbling around the perimeter and looking for Jackson is a losing strategy.

Newton had a TRIPLE-DOUBLE on Tuesday against a top 15 team and did not show up yesterday. Yet Andre gets all the flak.

People just hate Andre. There's no other explanation. Its really sad.
