X-rays are a prereq. in order to get an MRI for insurance purposes.

That’s kind of standard in some of the larger arenas, to be honest.

The medical room or wherever is way inside the building somewhere so it doesn’t make sense for an injured player to walk. Some actually just use golf carts.

One of my bucket lists jobs is to drive the golf cart which picks up injured players and carts them off the field/court of play.

There was discussion about this on a certain podcast about UNC's chances to improve their situation. Rob D said UNC needs 2 wins and their only chance is if Flagg gets food poisoning....

Judging by how far he turned that ankle, I’d say he’s out 8 to 10 weeks.

I’m a hater. I’m not afraid to admit that I hope he spends the rest of his life looking back at his time at Duke as being an underwhelming disappointment.

Lol I agree. This thought process became much more apparent for me when his mom opened her fat mouth about the UNC fans last weekend. Screw her and Duke!

My favorite response is always “I wish him the best!” Do we wish the D2 player the best? The random kid at Lehigh you never hear of? If you’re wishing everyone the best then the phrase is meaningless lol. Flagg is going to be the top pick in the draft I don’t have to wish him the best. He picked Duke over us, why should I wish him the best? With all that said obviously I hope he heals up quick.
 
I hope he heals up and is a better player for the experience - after Duke is out of the tournament.

At the Duke game today we’ll see if he wears a boot like McNeeley did or walks with a limp. Wondering what his chances for tournament are.

Technically, sure. Duke's stat page lists 14 other players who have accrued at least 7 minutes of playing time this season, but Flagg leads the Blue Devils in Minutes, FGM, FGA, FTM, FTA, Points, Pts/gm, Rebounding, Blocks, Steals, and Assists. Now consider that for a fair number of the above categories, the margins to #2 are not small.

Cooper Flagg arguably means more to Duke than Zach Edey meant to Purdue last season, but I'm sure that however Scheyer divvies up Flagg's 30 minutes per game can make up the 19 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals, while shooting slashes of 49%/37%/83% that Flagg offers.

I don't think the cost of an MRI would stop Flagg getting an MRI if insurance denied it.

Duke or someone else would cover it

I didn't say Flagg has to pay for it, but X-rays are quick, widely available, and a way to rule out bone/joint related issues.

They are also generally the way they check for metal. Even if a college athlete attests they have no plates, screws or other medical device, doctors and insurance companies (especially) are pretty fickle in the manner by which they cover their a55es, particularly in a non-emergency setting. They typically need corroborating documentation of a 19 year old's statement before placing a them in a giant magnet. Those Pesky loss runs and lawsuits are such a nuisance.

That said, I'm unaware of the College Athletics exception to the above CYA protocols.

Wow….this is an amazing thread. The X-ray confirms or at least mostly confirms there are no broken bones. Sometimes small fractures are not picked up by an X-ray machine. I had a small fracture in the bone right above my knee that was misdiagnosed until I pressed for the MRI. Now this is not an insurance issue that is for certain. But because my insurance would not approve the MRI I paid for it out of pocket it was about $1k cash. They charge the insurance company $3K. But that is a whole other topic. The MRI found two small fractures. Not good for the MD or the insurance company. But back on point regarding Flagg.

The X-ray is just making sure there is nothing broken. MRI will determine how bad the tissue damage is and then they can diagnose treatment once the know the level of the sprain. These athletes get multiple MRI’s when they are injured. They get the imagining done to see how the injury is healing.

He rolled his ankle, nothing like Liam did. With the treatments they have know for this type of soft tissue injury he will more than likely be good to go by next weekend. He might miss the rest of the ACC tournament and maybe he won’t be 100% next weekend but my guess is that he will play.
 
Most Dook thing ever. In wheelchair acting like his career may be over to cheering on the bench and walking around. A win in my book this year is them exiting the tournament with no banner, can’t stand that program

Yup - Xray is not a soft tissue thing. From the couple of bad ankle sprains I've had, I believe it also checks for bone spurs created by the stretched tendons pulling at the bone attachment.

This one may be closer to what happened to Broome earlier in the year, which only kept him out for a week plus. My guess is he's back for the 8/9. The ACC tourney does nothing for Duke and they could still very much win it without him. They won't need him first round either. Still hard to know the severity of it, gonna be curious to how he's moving around on the sidelines today. No boot or limp walking around, he's probably a ok.

Ice and rest. He can return for the second round of the ncaa tournament.
