There’s no way getting around it, if we are successful we will have guys leave early for the NBA and the necessary Hail Mary with blind folds admissions - these do not happen when you try to incent your coaches to hit the 1,000 APR perfection.

I can give you a real life example and that’s KO giving the final scholarship to a 4.0 senior / former walk-on - who was virtually a lock to graduate. The media and Casual Fans applauded but they weren’t so happy when we had injuries and no talent off the bench once the season started.

These. Are. Not. Mutually. Exclusive.
Laser. Focus. Isn't. A. Thing. For. College. Basketball. Students. Anyways... Even. Under. Calhoun.
Kentucky. Had. 1000. APR. 4. Years. In. A. Row.
UK Shines Again in NCAA Academic Progress Rates (APR)

Having said the above from time to time I would criticize Emeka in a kidding way how about practicing foul shots more and spending less time in the library

Our 2004 National Defensive Player of the Year, 2004 Big East Player of the Year, 2004 Tournament Most Outstanding Player and 2004 Olympian made one when it mattered against Duke. That's all that matters.

If the administration allows the basketball program to operate like they do at Kentucky than it doesn’t matter. It doesn’t so it does.

More important this real is a destination job for Hurley. If some team wants him before his 5th year they are writing a check for 8 million dollars.
I think he stays here, especially if he already has a NC by year 5. His family won't want to leave the Northeast, and as his boys grow you know what college they'll be rooting for and to attend eventually.

I thought one already attends Seton Hall?

Thanks for making my point. If one and done Kentucky had a 1,000 APR 4 consecutive years - it demonstrates it’s not a goal worth chasing.

A few comparables:
- John Calipari receives $50k for every APR >975 APR: John Calipari to earn $50,000 bonus for UK's academic progress rate
- Roy Williams receives $75k for every APR >975: UNC ups Roy Williams' contract through 2019-20 season

The APR, we know, is a sham. But it's a sham that's important to the NCAA, as it suggests to the casual fan that the NCAA might not be as corrupt as it is. Given that the NCAA punishes harshly those who fail to participate in the sham, and the coach has a role in maintaining the sham, it's reasonable to include an incentive in the contract. UNC rewards Roy Williams for making sure his players get A's in fake classes. Why shouldn't UConn reward Hurley similarly?

Chief, how do Kentucky, UNC, and Duke maintain 1,000 APRs with talented guys who leave school early? They have them take nothing classes in the summer, fall, and intersession, get A's for showing up, and then they can fail every class in the spring and still have a perfect APR.

So the incentive here is not for Hurley to value academics, but to become as skillful as the competition at evading academics.
The Apr is a completely bogus measurement stat. Witness the above poster citing KY and UNCheat

PJ, excellent post until the end - assuming the end is not satire. Chief’s Point is we should not be modeling our academics after UK’s one and done academics sham and UNC fake classes while they still excel on NCAA metrics. One year Alabama football had a much higher APR than Harvard basketball - does anyone need to know more?

A perfect APR shouldn't be (& likely will not be) Hurley's focus but nothing wrong with having it in picture so he doesn't ignore it...........1000 isn't important but being comfortably above the minimum is so 1 or 2 malcontents can't wreck a season.

It's a corrupt trade that benefits all parties (players, university, coach, TV networks, fans). The only thing I dislike is the lying. But at some point, the corruption is so obvious that it almost ceases to be lying. At that point one might as well participate, it's just the way this business is done. It's a semi-pro basketball team connected to a university. The NCAA in the UNC case showed us clearly what the business is. If you don't want to be in that business, drop to Div II.

Or D3 - like someone we know.

Academics vs. athletics

Do you think we are going to consistently get the top scholar athletes? Recruiting is tough enough without putting this noose around the coach’s neck.

Let's go back to a time before we cared about APR and lost scholarships and eventually got banned from the NCAA tourney. That was great

Seriously. You are smart.

There is a ocean sized gulf between meeting the standard and 1000.

Rewarding him for hitting 1000 does exactly what Chief says.

Pay him for staying eligible - don’t pay him for maxing out a stupid metric that gives him a reason not to push for some kids with questionable academics.

If you think you can win with a bunch of bookworms you can’t. If you are so blind to this reality go root for Trinity and stop rooting to destroy this basketball program.
