Colorado Post Game Thread

Interesting stat- Uconn took twice as many 3 pointers as Colorado..hit one or two more then different result

This is an obviously flawed team that won't beat even decent teams unless Karaban plays well.

Mahaney was a miss. Cut losses and go with Nowell. Reed was inconsistent at UM and it's carrying over.

And how on Earth do you not drive to the basket on the last possession?

I still think this team is boat loads better by March. But Colorado just absolutely torpedoed our rankings from here on out. They are a very, very bad team by the numbers and will be very lucky to win 5 games in the Big 12.

Where was Karaban when it mattered?

I don’t want to have any other coach ever, but I think we can all say - Hurley went into this season unprepared. Was he enjoying success too much? Hopefully this brings back his obsession to winning and he has a revelation in the air back.

Dayton ain’t no cake walk. In fact- they are a ton better than Colorado. We can very likely go 0-3 in Maui.

.-.
I think Dan Hurley needs to seriously reconsider his approach of not calling fouls in practice to get the players acclimated to the BE. The logic makes sense in theory but this team doesn’t seem to understand what they can and can’t get away with out of conference.

I'm ready to watch this lineup shrink to 8 players.

Samson gets very few minutes, and Ross gets basically none.

Starters: Reed, Karaban, McNeeley, Ball and Nowell.

Main bench players: Diarra and Stewart.

Sports minutes: Samson and Mahaney (Calcaterra minutes).

Ross and Singare for garbage time, if there ever is any garbage time.

Live or die with Nowell at this point.
Offense is terrible this year. McNeeley had terrible passes back-to-back. Caused the loss of Reed. Not sure why Ball never looked to drive until the end of the game. Some big problems, and some appear beyond repair.
Bright spot was Nowell. Maybe time to see Abraham too instead of Ross.

Colorado 56% from three. Most of them open shots. Second straight game the opponent shot over 50% from three.

This is a huge hole in our defense.
This is not a good defensive. Dayton might hit 15 threes against us the way we are guarding the perimiter. I think they are miles better than Colorado . Who would’ve thought we’ll be 4-3 by this time. Yikes .

Hurley needed to sit Reed and save him for the end of the game. It was either Singare with 6 minutes left or Singare (or Karaban) with 1 minute left guarding their huge center. Reed wasn't going to go that long without fouling. Complete pipe dream with our bigs penchant for fouling and the refs having a trigger happy whistle for us.

Is it time we accept that we simply lost way too much talent from last year's team to be able to challenge for a three peat? I don't know what to think right now...
Agree that we lost a #&($*(load of talent and that we just cannot replace in such a short time. Like last year Karaban runs cold and sort of hot. When are the calls to fire Dan going to start.

lol Reed had his first bad game of the year. It sure looked like the plan was to drive then Diarra said it’s Diarra time.

We don’t have anyone that can shake their man. Besides the fouling that’s our biggest issue, we are slow and finesse, but that rarely works.

Did you watch the game. We were much more effective with Johnson in the game. Reed was basically a no-show.
Samson played decently today but man do he and Reed need to stop taking dumb fouls trying to pick up hero rebounds they have no chance at or take dumb fouls far from the basket.

Its not about challenging a threepeat its about how off two national championshps is our talent unable to beat two unranked teams in a row and very likely will drop out of the top 25 next week. Who did these coaches recruit?

Remember 2 years ago when we lost like 6 out of 8 mid season? Relax, Hurley and staff will figure it out. It’s a very long season.
After the last 2 nights it’s rational to worry about the team. They have to beat someone with a pulse before I’m optimistic again

Ya we're not that team relax. I do have confidence Hurley will figure it out though.

I’m not ready to throw in the towel after these two losses, but this team clearly has work to do. They will improve as the younger guys mature, but we as fans may have to accept that this team is not what the past two teams were and likely won’t be.

Team has all sorts of problems. The biggest is we foul constantly. Biting on every pump fake, reaching, crashing into guys. It needs to stop. We're not guarding the perimeter nearly well enough. The defense is an absolute mess. We got picked apart by a dribble drive team of athletes yesterday. We got picked apart by a slow halfcourt team of modest/subpar talent today.

We had two drives this game for buckets, Nowell's drive in the first half and Solo's drive in the second half. That may be more than we had last game. Inability to take guys off the dribble is a huge problem because we're not getting any of the movement we got last season.

I love Alex but just a putrid performance from him. He was a ghost out there. It was always insane some on the board said he could be the best UConn player ever. He's a great connector and a three point shooter but he was our 5th best player last season. I was hoping he would make a leap this season and be a go to player/leader. He took one 2 point shot the entire game, that's pathetic and he's not living up to the hype of a first team all-American.

The good, there was barely any but Liam is obviously really good and he's a gamer. Nowell played great in the first half.

This has been an awful start to the season for Hurley. He tried to make Mahaney the point guard and it didn't work. It looks like he's moved on from that already and in the process Mahaney's confidence looks to be crushed. He was all out of sorts again early and then never played again. Hurley hasn't figured out a lineup yet and guys don't seem to know their roles.

No two ways about it, this has been an awful trip to Hawaii and this was an awful loss today. This is the type of loss that can come back to bite you if you're fighting to make the tournament at the end of the season.

I'm going to hope for a win in the 8th place game and then try to enjoy my turkey and pie.

I am not giving up on the 3 peat, but anyone thinking UConn was going dominate or simply cake walk has not grasped the amount of talent UConn has lost from last year.
Having said that I am disappointed in losing to Colorado.

Most of what's wrong with this team so far is between the ears. It's not coaching. It's not holding practices with no fouls. That worked out well the last few years.
I will take Solo Ball at the offensive end, every single possession, but how can he be under the basket with his man out at the 3 pt line. He gets out of position and closes on guys softly. Ross is very similar. There is too much ball watching or trying to make the amazing steal instead of playing solid defense. Diarra is great on the defensive end, but there are times when guys are rolling around screens and he seems hesitant to pass and holds the ball a second too long.
Last few years we had guys who played 100% at both end all the time. Spencer wasn't great defensively to start, but you could see him progress and he may have peaked defensively in the championship game. Clingan just ate up so much space and I think Newton's defense was often underrated. He fought and banged and used his size to his advantage. Castel was Castle and Karaban always put the effort forward.
This team is just out of position way too much.
There is enough blame to go around with this team, but don't give up on them. Hurley's bread and butter historically has been to teach defense.
