2026 Recruiting: Colben Landrew Official Visit (10/3)

Would've sworn I posted this. Can't find it, so apparently not. Based on 9 games I watched versus top-notch hs comp. I didn't watch any of the blowout games.

24 MINS

15.4 PTS
5.3 REB
1.3 AST

2.0 TO
1.9 STL
0.3 BLK

61% 2FG (5.7 attempts)
38% 3FG (4.3 attempts)
87% FT (4.2 attempts)

Overall:
All of these 9 games are versus top-notch high school competition. Looks to be about 6’6/6’7 and 215–the sites that have him at 6’5 or 6’4 are definitely wrong. His skillset really looks like a typical SF skillset to me more than the combo-guard some have been suggesting, but is basically playing everything from PG to PPF. Somestimes more PF than I'd like based on roster makeup. Super physical going for rebounds and loves to dribble out and outlet from there. Solid athleticism but nothing to write home about for our level. Not a great passer at this stage. Solid at the rim, good but streaky shooter off the catch. Not a very good shooter off the dribble. Nice handles for his size. Finishes with both hands.

Defense is good, not great. Effort sometimes comes and goes like with a lot of recruits. Awareness of positioning and length bode well for his defensive future.

Offense:
I would say his biggest weakness right now is probably passing. Not the best at hitting cutters or other kinds of passing to score, but I like his passing and movement in the high post vs zones. Moves it well on the perimeter too. Very under control compared to his teammates most of the time. Bringing it up and moving the ball.

Some games he looks absolutely unstoppable taking two dribbles to the rim. Others, it’s apparent he doesn’t have much of a counter. He has a little ripover in the lane and pretty good pivoting off a jump stop, but I’m not seeing the kind of creativity under there you’d expect from a 5* SF.

He’s aware of cutting and refining his timing, but his teammates aren’t always making the pass. Solid screen setting. Put multiple games away with his great FT% in crunch time. Has a little more creativity getting his shot off in the mid-range than I expected. Most turnovers are coming from dumb passes when he tries to make the hero pass instead of the right pass. Not a kid who is getting travels or anything like that with regularity.

I’d like to see him more involved in his team’s offense at times. Has a propensity to float in the corner. He brings the ball up plenty and will hand it off to a guard, but tends to defer to players that aren’t as good as him.

Defense:
Not a shotblocker–instinct and effort for them isn’t there. Much more of a positioning focused defender. Team plays a 2-3, 1-2-2, presses and man so he’s getting experience with different looks. He does A LOT of fighting post ups with his size and strength; we’ll need him to defend the perimeter more. Will make him a great 2-4 versatile defender for us in time. I like his instinct to trap a picked up dribble quickly too.

Effort definitely comes and goes on defense, but he’s really tough when scrapping for the ball. Quick hands when he’s in position in the lane, had some games with a bunch of steals.

It’s so difficult to judge defense for a high school kid. Castle, for example, was a nonchalant high school defender and look what he did for us? I can see why we’re pursuing Landrew so hard though; the pieces are there and he has the right mentality to be a defensive asset if he puts his mind to it.
Excellent post. Didn’t he recently start playing basketball too? I thought I had read that he primarily played football

That’s the crazy part, I also read somewhere he only started playing basketball full time about a year ago… more or less.. so his ceiling may be a lot higher

No he's been playing forever. There's youtube clips of him playing AAU in like 2nd grade. He just ALSO played football until a couple years ago.

Much appreciated for this, @husky429

Everything about this move is fantastic. If Hurley wants him, I’m sure he can find a way to parlay is 6’10 wingspan to become a plus defender.

Here’s 247’s scout on him listing his wingspan:

Commitment announcement less than 50 hours away.

UConn: “Coach (Dan) Hurley, he’s like a crazy coach. He pushes his team hard and he’s locked in with his team everyday. He does not let his team down, so that’s big time as well. And they’re a winning program. They like that I can pretty much do anything, and I can play in a system.

”Our relationship is pretty good. Coach Hurley and Coach Kimani (Young), I mean I pretty much talk to the whole staff.”

“I’m going to go to whatever school is best for me,” Landrew said. “Where I can get to the next level and hope you be in a green room one day. So whatever school pushes me every day, and not sugar coat anything. Just whatever I feel best where I feel that I’m most successful.”

I'm surprised we haven't seen any crystal balls yet.
Who needs Crystal Balls when we have Ruffballs 😂
