Coaching openings

No if a coach is fired after May 1st, they have until June 1st.
Thanks for clearing that up, fair for the players now to make a decision if they do want to venture elsewhere

Good to know. I've never seen that stipulated anywhere before. That only applies to the "head" coach, and not assistant coaches? What if the coach "quits" on their own instead of being "fired" ?

Too bad for Hoover.

Meanwhile, some fans and coaches...

Very strange timing. Now any players who wish to transfer out/in are going to have to file waiver requests to be eligible this coming season since the May 1 deadline has passed.
Because there’s been a coaching change the players can still enter the transfer portal and have until July 1 to do so, according to Currie.

Is this the same Currie who lasted less than a year as AD at Tennessee, the same tone deaf gent who hired Greg Schiano (of Sandusky Penn State fame)?

Hmmmm… Wikipedia thinks it's the dude who was run out of Knoxville on a rail by those oh-so-virtuous Tenn. fans.

“Currie took over as athletic director on February 28, 2017.Currie was dismissed on December 1, 2017 after 8 months on the job due to a failed coaching search that included the decision to agree to terms with Ohio State defensive coordinator Greg Schiano. The Schiano recruitment led to a large protest by fans in part due to Schiano's alleged failure to report the sexual assault of children by former Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky.“
@Sifaka is correct.

This is also the same John Currie who , as Kansas State AD, came under fire for the handling of Leticia Romero’s transfer back in 2014. Initially, Kansas State completely denied her release.
Later, the administration said it would release her, but to none of the 100 schools she had included when K-State requested a list of programs in which she might be interested.
There was a LOT of negative backlash (including from Jay Bilas), and Currie/Kansas State finally consented to let Romero transfer (which she did, to Florida State; the NCAA later granted FSU’s petition to allow her to immediately play for the Seminoles).

Interesting addition for NC State. Bringing back an alum is always good. Spent her last four years at Indiana where their guard play was strong. Curious to see who will be the post coach with Batth now at Michigan though.

Ball Out is teasing something about Rutgers making a decision soon. Their "hot takes" have been a tad more accurate than others. The article link is behind a paywall FYI.

Well, I'm not putting a lot of faith in their "tease", but a Rutgers insider had been expecting an announcement possibly as early as Friday (2 days ago).

He was hearing that Megan Duffy had an inside track, Jolette Law was possibly being considered, a couple other names that would not be "big time". Several candidates, including Chris Dailey, Kim Barnes-Arico, Carla Berube, Chelsea Newton, etc. said no, reportedly. Supposedly Law was being pushed by Staley and CVS. But who really knows.

Law wasn't good as a HC at Illinois. Clearly there has been a lot of water under the bridge since and maybe she's learned a thing or two.

Never heard of her
Good coach. As Wake's press release said, "She is American's all-time wins leader and the only head coach in program history to lead the Eagles to the NCAA Tournament. She was named Patriot League Coach of the Year twice and led the Eagles to five 20-plus win seasons." For a number of years, Bucknell and Lehigh would have the run of that league, but Gabbia built a really solid team over the last few years, winning the Patriot League tourney this year and going to the NCAA tournament against Michigan.

Jade Edwards, her star guard at American, was a heck of a guard both defensively and offensively. She's using her COVID year to play at DePaul, not far from her home in Ravenswood.

This is largely a rebuild job, but if Jewell Spear stays, Gabbia will have an Edwards+ from the get-go.

It’s almost July and there are several assistant coaching jobs that are open. Louisville, Texas, Kentucky and Florida State to name a few.

Add Notre Dame, as well, after Coquese Washington left to take the head coaching position at Rutgers.

And unless something was announced today, Rutgers as well, although an insider said that Tasha Pointer and Nikki McCray have been hired as assistants by Coach Washington - no announcement as of yesterday.

If the rumour is true, that also indicates McCray is healthy enough to coach after stepping down at Miss State. I'll take that type of news.

If those rumors are true, one assistant (Pointer) is a former Rutgers player and assistant coach, while the other (McCray) has extensive background south of the Mason-Dixon line. Washington herself was at Penn State and worked the I-95 corridor. She has also steadfastly maintained a relationship with her Flint/Michigan homebase. Will be interesting to see whom the third assistant is. Will they hire a "current" Jersey person? Maybe a slightly younger assistant to round things out from a demographic perspective?

That would be a major question.

The "insider" reporting this has often been correct, in fact he touted Washington before it was announced. Of course, he also ran through about 6 other "front runners" before he got to her. And maybe, as it dripped out to him, they were. The big debate in RU fan land is why no announcement, some speculation ties to July 1 fiscal year, but who knows.

I have no horse in all this, it needs to be someone Coach Washington is comfortable with and can develop the team. Tasha is a good hire, I think, and McCray - if indeed healthy - a home run although, she may not be long for the job depending on her health issues - she may want to resume a head coaching career if able.

Watching carefully, because Rutgers needs some serious coaching at this point.

Looks like the Kelly Graves coaching tree continues to expand outwards. I wonder who they'll find as a replacement. From what I've read, Moser was involved in their recruiting when he was hired/promoted last year.
No, Filled in for Jackie Hairston who was pregnant last year.
