ESPN's FPI had Maryland at 27. UConn at 125. What did people think was going to happen with 125 vs 27?
It’s not surprising that happens when 125 plays 27 on the road, but I think the frustration and surprise comes from the fact we are once again 125.

it's the first game of the year. nobody knows what's going to happen. Look at Clemson, FSU and Florida's week.
Post #48 you seem to suggest people should've known what would happen. I didn't expect us to get curbstomped by 43. I didn't expect our offense and defense to look completely lost. I didn't expect the team to be so undisciplined. I didn't expect we wouldn't be able to tackle players. From Mora's post-game comments he didn't expect it either.

You seem to think we all should've expected this. I don't think being pathetically bad should always be expected of UConn football even though it's the norm year after year.

Not sure about Clemson. Played the most loaded team in college football. Clemson defense is elite. Unfortunately Clemson offense is not. Clemson would boat race UConn. Clemson is a better team than Maryland which will be a middle of pack team in the BIG.

Good news we did not play a top SEC or BIG team - Alabama, Georgia, Texas, Tennessee, Missouri, Ohio State, Penn Stare. Playing those teams would have been 100-0 and the game may have been called by 3rd QTR.

I love Jim Mora, but i think he needs to take a page out of Dad's press conference playbook. put those kids on notice.

Why don't we see how this season ends. No one who is a realist expected UConn to beat Maryland. I still think this will be a winning season.
You sound like a typical Uconn fan, let's waste another year! let's give him a chance. We need better coaching period! This team like in the past don't even know how to tackle. But like they say lets give them another year !

You sound like a typical UConn fan, everything is trash, coaches don't know what they're doing, lets bury the program, fire everybody.

FPI is not a real authority...you really think that Maryland is one of the 30 best teams in the country? Phil Steele is who you should go by. He has them as 10th in B10 and not even Top 50 coming into the season. That's the authority I go by. Not some random number generator.

This Maryland team won 8 games last year, returns less experience this year. They will be around the same with a MUCH weaker schedule this year. This is a middle of the road B10 team who beat us by 43 in a game where we had 2+ months to prepare. Its not a good look and its not acceptable. At least to me its not. A loss is fine and absolute inhalation is not. There were many FCS teams that competed better against better teams this entire weekend.

100%.

Idaho did better against Oregon at Oregon (better than Maryland)
South Dakota did better against Iowa St at Iowa St (around Maryland's level give or take)
North Dakota St did better against Colorado at Colorado (around Maryland's level give or take)

Getting annihilated like they did against Maryland is a horrible look and just more of the same hot garbage.

In fairness to the typical UConn going on 14 years of consistently bad, losing football is hardly a typical fan experience. When .500 is your aspiration and a banner year, there are real problems.

This is year 3 of his tenure and if the opening game of the season is a sign of things to come, no one, the boosters, administration or fans will be happy.

The schedule is friendly to help reach a bowl game.

MD is a solid team, but we made them look like Alabama.

Let's see how the next game goes. As they say, one game at a time.

It was a bad game. I'll leave it at that.

More is fine, but our assistant coaches are bad due to lack of money in program

At this point they could hire Connor Stalions for cheap once his suspension is up. I'm not even really joking much either, say what you will about that kid but hes a genius regarding football. After watching that piece on Netflix about him, I actually came away more impressed.

There is still an unrealistic expectation of the place the football team is in. You can’t criticize the football team for its weaknesses when we have essentially made it impossible for them to compete.

They are trying, and maybe at the G5 level they can be middle of the road as an Indy. But they aren’t going to suddenly be a mid tier power 5 team, much less top 25.

Interesting discussion. I need more data to participate but they will be in hand in three days at 1530 hours. The central question to be answered is whether or not the disastrous score of last weekend represented a foreshadowing of something really bad this weekend. A 14+ point W would go a long way to calming our apprehensions. Anything less would be concerning. I was a Mora skeptic, but he said the right things and won me over. But we are now in the rubber meets the road phase. The trend better be up this year or one has to ask what is the point of continuing on the current contract. And btw, I was hoping UConn would get Chesney last time.

I don't think anyone was expecting that.

We brought in lots of new transfers and spent "a lot" on NIL to bring in players. But in the limited data we've seen ... almost no improvement, not even on the basics. The play calling was also less than inspiring, to put it kindly.

Is it so much to ask for some small measure of real improvement from year to year?

John do you work PR for the school football team or something? LOL. Good Grief dude. I don't think there is an unrealistic expectation at ALL. Not even a little bit. I've followed this program from there transition from 1AA to 1A (at the time it was called) and they are VASTLY worse NOW-on par with the 2000-2001 teams when we were transitioning. The 02-03 teams would kick this team and last years teams @SS. I know FCS teams that would soundly beat us. That's not asking much, that's just asking to be competitive. Someone else mentioned Vegas had this game I think at 16.5 and we lost by 43!!! That's telling right there. We underperformed by a mile what Vegas thought we would lose by. LOL. Coming off a 3-8 season last year that was HUGELY disappointing with a veteran team no less. You need to wake up brother....wow...your "expectation" is literally no expectation at all I guess.

The unrealistic expectation thing is so weird. The team has been putrid for a dozen years. Like probably the biggest laughingstock in all of college football. It's not unreasonable to think they should be better than rock bottom.
