Coach Hurley says this year's team can't take "hard" coaching

Because scouts clearly see an NBA talent. If only someone knew how to coach and get the most out of him.

But why do all that when you can go to the portal and get someone you don’t have to do all that with?
If he had talent he’d be playing

Everyone went after Mahaney, so I really can’t blame Hurley for missing the scout there. He was a hot commodity and we won the sweepstakes - similar to the Timberlake outcome for KU in 23/24.

It’s hard to judge Nowell, he’s had a ton of injuries and Hurley panicked after Maui and rode Hassan more stunting his development. Now when he’s out there he looks overwhelmed. Him, Mahaney, Abraham, Ross, Stewart and even Ball are all overwhelmed and keep making the same mistakes - that leaves us with an unplayable bench and no backcourt depth.

It’s gotten so bad in practice Abraham and Ross can’t sniff the floor, Mahaney has his minutes severely cut, and we’re limiting Stewart and Nowell’s exposure because extended court time results in losing. Ball plays half the game and can only jack 3’s.

The staff knows what’s going on, Alex does too which is why he spoke out last week. They’re not happy. Kind of a perfect storm of misses, lack of development, and roster/chemistry issues which I won’t go into.
The staff severely mismanaged this roster and season because they had the wrong plan for it. That’s all there is to it.

I’m so sick and tired of hearing about practice too. I do not care what happens there. See if the guys can go out there and make plays.

I almost hope we get out of contention so guys can go out there and play free and see what we have instead of Hurley having everyone’s rope so tight because every game is life or death.

They can’t make plays in games if they can’t make plays in practice. Keep in mind we practice against our sub-100 rated defense.

I promise I do not care about a practice nobody has seen that’s just hearsay.

There is game film of Abraham, Ross, Ball, Stewart, Mahaney, and Nowell getting blown by and crossed over by future Le Moyne College alumni.

It got so bad we had to end a lot of those experiments early. Hurley is trying to work a miracle here, trust him.

What are we even talking about here? Ross has played in every game this season, he's had every chance to show what he can do in games and he's shown nothing. Liam was out for 5 weeks, Ross and Jaylin have had every chance.

Mainly referring to Abraham, but yes Ross has had his heavy serving of chances.

Imagine if we shut down the Jeremy Lamb experiment after the month of November. That’s stupid risk adverse no patience bs.

And it’s why he’s an overhyped developer coach. Coaches like Calhoun and Pop took risks when they saw things in players. Hurley doesn’t have the nuts to do that.

And there it is . . . He doesn’t know how to coach. Glad you came out and said it.

Who should Ross be playing over this season?

Ball, Karaban, and McNeeley all played 35+ minutes today. Nobody played well enough to be on the court for 35 minutes.

It’s moot at this point. Hurley put a muzzle on Ross way before we got this far offensively anyways.

Outside of early season cupcakes. He’s only taken more than 3 shots in a game twice this season.

Imagine if Calhoun and Kemba didn’t stay on Jeremy Lamb to stay aggressive and keep shooting.

Counterpoint: He’s not NBA lottery pick Jeremy lamb

You did not just compare Jayden Ross to Jeremy Lamb and Kemba Walker

He doesn’t know how to develop perimeter players offensively, specifically.

There’s a lot of nuances to coaching. I don’t know if your pea brain understands nuance though.

Hawkins, Jackson, Ball have all made significant jumps. But now you’ll move the goalposts and talk about point guards that we recruited as freshmen, a much smaller sample that maybe has a sliver of a point behind it.

It would seem that the issue there is evaluation vs coaching since none of those point guards that we “didn’t develop” did much after leaving (and don’t try to talk about Diggins firing up a ton of shots for a terrible UMass team).

Oh stop it. I remember Calhoun not playing Marcus White at all. Calhoun then missed a few games for something(probably health related) and the coach that took over(Blaney?) played White and he rebounded like a demon and carved out significant playing time. When Calhoun returned, he admitted that he should have given White more run and that he was happy his assistant didn't listen to him and gave him a chance. White was in the rotation the rest of the year. Calhoun is my favorite coach of all time in any sport. While he was one of the best coaches ever and the best program builder ever, he was not the infallable god that never made mistakes, had player misses or had disappointing seasons. We tend to remember the glory days (there were many) and forget a lot of the not so great years or the players that didn't work out. We just won back 2 back titles and people are flipping out on Hurley like we have never had a down season. People lose their collective minds when they don't get what they want these days. I expected that from a few of the same obvious agenda driven anti-Hurley crowd, but the rest just seem so fragile like they can't handle one disappointing season where we will still probably make the dance. Did you really think it would be as easy as the last 2 years every year? The mistakes made look obvious in hindsight now but it's not an exact science and sometimes it just doesn't come together like you had hoped. Ask Bill Self about these last two seasons. As for the "I don't like Hurley's ego or behavior on and off the court" crowd. Yeah, his 3 peat talk was maybe a bit much and his treatment of officials is a bit much at times and often counterproductive. Saying he is the best coach to a ref is kind of lame and yapping at fans at away games is stupid. He's an intense dude from Jersey. Self belief is big for him. Part of what makes him a little crazy is probably what also makes him great. Hopefully in the coming years he can learn to channel it a little better. He can work on some of these things, but you take the good with the bad, and there is way more good. Same with Calhoun. Never really loved the berrating of players right on the court after a timeout was called. He had a very quick hook which was sometimes funny and a good thing and sometimes not so good. He also was cranky and combative with the press. Sometimes deserving and sometimes not. It was also on his watch that we got in trouble with the NCAA(Yeah many of those infractions look silly now and are absurd including APR and text messages) but he did bring Nate Miles into the program. Again, the good far outweighs the bad.

No I’ll just point out two of those guys can’t dribble or finish and the other can’t finish or score in general. But yeah, development.

And then we can talk about the guys the staff couldn’t teach the 3 point shot too because that’s apparently the only thing they can teach offensively.

Blind test:
LOL. Nice cherry picking. Now do the next 6 games when both players' minutes didn't change . . .

Ross has had plenty of opportunity to prove himself. Whether he's not good or not ready doesn't matter, he's been a net negative 80% of the time he's been on the floor.

I notice you left out minutes played. Both Lamb and Ross saw their minutes drop significantly in Maui.

At the end of the day, you're comparing a guy that was a day one starter to a project to make the point that the project (who was getting over 15 minutes per game until the last 5 games) somehow didn't get a chance . . .

Sure thing bud.

The first 3 columns are minutes, FGM, and FGA. As you see one guy still continued to get playing time and as seen in the article posted on this board, was told to keep shooting.

The other guy despite similar production, was not told that same thing.

Who’s suppose to be a day one starter and day one project based on this?

One performed in the games vs. the post-Maui scrubs, and the other didn't (ok, Ross' games weren't against scrubs, but he still played awfully and still got minutes).

This thread went weird... Are all of the random arbitrary game logs comparing Ross to Lamb? What is the point?

Are we arguing that JC gave Lamb a chance and Dan Hurley hasn't given Ross one? I'm beyond confused.

Yeah apparently Dan Hurley can't develop players, is a bad coach, and is keeping Jayden Ross out of the NBA. It's just a bizarre conversation
