Cincy suspends John Brannen

he's got a similar path as Brannen...assistant at a major program and has made a pretty remarkable turnaround at a horizon league school. in terms of personality he seems like the anti-brannen. seems like he'll get his shot at this level soon but not sure if he's ready just yet.

his name has popped up because he has some connection to our AD since both were at Minnesota at the same time. i'd guess if lil ricky pitinio didnt take the new mexico job his name would come up here too.

They already went the hot Horizon League coach route with Brannen (when hired he'd been to two NCAA tournaments and an NIT with three-straight 20-win seasons). I don't think they'll go there again if they have other options (and the finances to do something else).

If Cinci has a better campus and more research in their portfolio, why are they ranked way lower than UConn on the national ranking scales? Obviously they're all biased in one way or another. But they seem to generally be a reflection of what you hear about schools-ish.

I know A LOT has to do with research and the specific school, and all that. And for my fiance who is defending her PhD this summer, the "prestige" of a school in her field matters less than the advisors you can get and publishing opportunities. Rutgers is randomly like a top 5 school for some subset of her field and super-competitive to get into, even though it's not really that competitive outside of that.

I did a roadtrip of the Southwest/Midwest which I mentioned before in another post.

well... to keep it short. I visited Cincy and since it was during covid-19 and there wasn't much to do... I decided to drive-by Xavier and University of Cinci... (also eventually visited OSU at Columbus)

I was fascinated by the lovely and hilly urban campus of the University of Cincinnati. Honestly I was quiet impressed. It looks well-maintained, aesthetically pleasing, and they squeeze a heck of a lot of buildings into a relatively small central campus. The football stadium is jam packed in between other buildings. Yet, it all looks really good with the hilly terrain.

For someone like me that attended a sprawling suburban campus (Stony Brook University) and whose wife attended rural UConn... it was a nice to see a good looking open urban campus for a change. especially as the nearest urban campus to my house are Fordham and Columbia (both locked-in and mostly segregated from the rest of the city)

Also saw a lot of research buildings further from the central part of campus. Looks like a good school... but hey I have nothing more than looks to back it up


Definitely UofCincy looks like one of the economic/research engines of the city. Xavier not so much other than a smaller private catholic university

Wes Miller looks to be the guy now, which is great for Wes Miller and Cincy - I guess him getting passed over for UNC told him that job won't be open for another 20 years.

I've heard great things about Miller, would be a nice upgrade for him.

Didn't like him for UNC now and don't like Hubert Davis for them now. Miller would be a great hire for Cincy and the UNC job will probably be open in a few years.
 
I will say I didn't totally agree with Hubert Davis there, and some of the quotes from his press conference were.... odd.....

I can see Hubert Davis being there 3 years or 20 years with no in between

It's the biggest job in college hoops as far as I'm concerned, it shouldn't go to an assistant or someone from a small program. It should go to the best candidate in the country, I doubt they even reached out all that much outside of the family.
 
Miller is "from" the family, while not necessarily currently being in it...

That being said, I agree and disagree at the same time - there's no way that job was going to a national candidate

Do you really want to hire a stepping stone guy? There's like a 50% chance Hubert Davis only lasts 4 years at UNC, and then Miller is absolutely gone if he's been successful for you. There's also a 50% chance Miller himself fails.

So of the 50% chance he works out, 25% of that he leaves after a few years and you have to restart. You're basically Xavier at that point (UC fans will love that), but A10 Xavier since you're in the AAC, not Big East Xavier.

So 25% chance things are great, 25% chance you're A10 Xavier, and 50% chance of program death.

You mean the Big East Xavier that just lost their coach to Louisville three years ago?

Coaches come and go over time. It’s your job as an AD to hire the best candidate as needed.

Weird. It's a good hire. An up-and-coming young coach who is on everyone's "rising stars" coaching list.

Believe so. The wording from the announcement makes it seem that way. Also, afaik Brannen has received $0 from UC.

Why would Miller be gone after 4 years at UNC? That’s his dream job.

I think he's saying if Hubert Davis flames out at Carolina and Miller has had any success at Cincinnati he's gone as soon as Chapel Hill opens up.

Reality is that Cincy is a stepping stone job. Maybe when conference realignment happens and they get a Big 12 spot that changes. That’s a big if. In regards to Miller he will be hired by any ACC team if he turns Cincy around. And honestly it shouldn’t be too difficult too.
