That's three in a row for UConn incoming freshmen, btw. And although NPOY rankings don't correlate perfectly with being the top college recruit in the land, it does indicate the recruiting services may have missed the boat by a lot with Chong.

This is an awesome turn of events.

Outstanding !! Glad to hear it. With the type of season and overall accomplishments she has had in her HS career , The Parade POY Award is well deserved.

And it sort of makes up for being slighted and overlooked for the McDonalds All-America game.:)

WOW.
Did not expect that at all.
She was 39th in the composite rankings (ASGR, HG, BS)!

The other finalists are also a big surprise --
Dahlman #28, DeShields #2, Holland #3, Jankoska not in top 100.

Odd.

Well that is impressive for her. BUT...

Rebekah Dahlman (Vanderbilt), Diamond DeShields (North Carolina), Kianna Holland (Duke) and Tori Jankoska (Michigan State) were the other finalists for the award.

Now this is not to take anything away from Dahlman or Jankoska, but to have those 5 as finalists but NOT have Russell, Davis, or even Harper on that list makes it a tad suspect. Again, congrats to Saniya - I think we all know she's MUCH better than the "odd man out" ESPN/HG ranking which still lists her at 75. But... I'm not sure what to make of a list of POY finalists that includes only the 5 that Parade listed...

To answer Vowel's "question" about rankings...

75 per ESPN/HG
30 per Blue Star
20 per ASGR

When you have an outlier that is as far off as ESPN is, I'm not sure you can really go by "composite" since it's pretty clear they have her wrongly rated...

Congrats!

Agree though, that's an odd finalist group????

I suggest it was due to her overall statistics, covering every category,as well as her game personality.Great scorer, yes, great assist player, yes, very good rebounds, yes, which also states team personality,to do the dirty things other than scoring. The overall makeup of her raised her team mates to a level the school had not reached ever before, and I think this was the key to her receiving this award.Much congratulations to her,and it will be fun to see what she brings to the next level.

Folks - is it just possible that academics was an aspect of the judging process for the award?

Apparently Parade award is based on performance in HS. (Not necessarily potential, which is what the recruiting services try to evaluate.)

So I'd guess that a person who scored a lot has an advantage.

There's one element of rating that hasn't been touched on as yet: physical characteristics/measurements relevant to basketball.

Saniya is 6-0 making her tall enough to be a possible phenom at the 1 spot about average for an elite 2 player and undersized at the 3, again for elite status. From video I have seen, she has phenomenal dexterity. I agree with the observation of a prior poster who couldn't tell whether she was L or R until she took a shot from 3 range. She appears not just ambidextrous, but very coordinated in that dexterity.

But, with all that said, Saniya is slender. It remains to be seen, I think, whether her build will be a help or a hindrance to performance at next level up. I don't know why ESPN/HG doesn't have her rated higher. I wonder if build is a factor?

Meanwhile, CONGRATS!! to Saniya on Parade POY. I'm hoping they have it right, as well they could. :)

Davis probably wasn't selected because she sat out the season. But I was very surprised by selections as well. Harper was probably a better selection to the team.

Holland's composite is 3? That's surprising to me. She is ranked somewhere in the 30's I thought by ESPN at least.

IMO Saniya is a very special player. Eric you beat me to it when talking about the rankings. Saniya can flat out play and is going to be a big surprise when UConn fans see her settle in .

I think he was referring to her jersey number next season... she will wear #3 for us ;)

jp as far as I know sonaya is 5'9' not 6'. Watched her on tv a few times this past season and agree she is very
slender and will need to get stronger in the weight room to be as successful in college. Best thing you can say about her is she is a winner and should fit right in with the rest of the team.

Yes, most places she is listed at 5'9". jplot may be thinking of Sierra Calhoun who is listed at 6' or 6'1". The average elite 3 is about 6'.

TONY - been thinking for many weeks along the exact same line: "very special player....can flat out play....will be big surprise." Been thinking she will raise alot of eyebrows.
From the tape I've seen, there isn't much she can't do. And am not overly concerned about her build.....(not certain about this, but re somatotype, isn't she kind of like a shorter version of Abrosimova, "Inspector Gidget" (Stother), Cash the Frosh, and many other lean kids who did not play for us but were very, very capable ball players, such as Geno's favorite from L'ville?).

Plus, great teammate and " clearly Connecticut" all around.
