The last time we had a big with any type of offensive skill was about eight years ago. I love Calhoun, but I've always felt he's been a bit overrated as far as developing big men. With the exception of Okafor, it has been the guards/wings that have led us to all this sucess. Even Thabeet didn't have much of an offensive game, which is why he's flamed out in the NBA.

Thoughts?

Who was the poster that wished UConn would rehire Clyde Vaughan? It seems it is time for him to show up again.

Who does coach the big mean currently? I don't see any coaches who were actually big men as players on the staff. Maybe this is part of the problem. If we want to stay in the UCONN family, what about Cliff Robinson or Rod Sellers? Cliff has the strong NBA pedigree and Sellers was a maximum effort guy.

I wouldn't be against re-hiring Clyde. He's spent his time in purgatory for some hummers in Hartford. Plenty of coaches have gotten caught doing a lot worse than Clyde and have gotten back in to coaching. I was all for him taking a 3-5 year hit in terms of coaching at a high profile school.

I would count Adrien as a more recent option despite his height (unless you are speaking more towards Centers). You could feed him the ball and he was competent enough to score at a decent rate at least.

I'd say Thabeet developed really well during his time here. I know he would've dominated today.

I think some forget that HT was a pretty decent offensive player his final year.

Didn't Pat Sellers also work with the big men before he lost his job in the wake of the Nate Miles mess?

+1.... it was just hummers....somebody call him

Better check our weed policy before hiring Cliff.
I thought about that before I suggested him but then I thought, "They don't drug test coaches, do they?" Hell, if they knew how to get our big guys to play better, I'd be ok with hiring Cheech and Chong to coach at this point.

Now there's quote that you don't see everyday.

Honestly, the IQ of this board has just never been lower. A worm could slither over our collective IQ and its nuts would not so much as graze us.

Basically, being a center at UConn is effectively a stone's skip to a paying gig in the NBA. Jake, Emeka, Travis, Hilton, Josh, Hakeem, Cliff, Charlie...

And yet some chucklehead thinks that somehow Jim Calhoun is overrated at developing big men and that we need to hire someone to coach the bigs. (As if the three guys currently who have two or three decades of DI head coaching are somehow deficient.)

And Clyde/Clive is never coming back. There's zero chance.

Chief was the original bring back Vaughn crusador. I think I posted something like this to that thought about 8 years ago:

A big time center recruit down to us and say, oh, cuse. Mother to JB 'We are really thinking about UConn as a place for him to go.' JB to Mother 'Do you really want your 18 year old son to be coached by a guy who's been arrested three times for trying to pay $10 for oral sex from a hooker?' Mother to JB 'Do you have the LOI we can sign now?'

No huh? Anyone remember Rod Sellers? Travis Knight? Not sure Clyde was around then..............I think Clyde was very good with big men but the previous mentioned weren't as talented coming in as some of the guys Clyde was able to coach.

Kevin Ollie, Glen Miller all understand the game, have educated themselves in all factes and do not need to be 7' tall to teach these things. Guys get better by working hard and listening. If they just don't have it then maybe there's little chance of getting better. Many times it's pure natural ability which creates the best players and sometimes it's a real hard worker that gets it. The there's times a guy has all the tools and never gets it and just can't play against the best. Not on the coaches............don't look any further than Duke if you want to see a lot of talented guys who never got better over the years!!

Nothing like putting your ignorance of college basketball on to the web for the world to see.

Look at any dook freshman big guy and compare film to when they're seniors. They're much better at floor slaps, hugs and flopping under the hoop. And you can thank wojo for that.
