Cam Spencer drafted 53 to Memphis

Cam looks well coached, very seasoned and NBAish. That Championship pedigree can be seen in his game. He just needs the right squad that can use and need his talents.
Yes. Cam and Steph both look more polished and appear to have a better understanding of the game than others on the court.

They have room. Cam is an nba player. Look at Sam Hauser. That’s how fam will play, though cam has more well rounded game but not quite the size.

He may never be. Starter. But who cares? That kid can play

They're different players but it's an interesting comparison because while Hauser has a plus-skill (3-point shooting), the reason he was in the Celtics' playoff rotation is because he's turned himself into a decent defender. Nobody's focusing on it in Summer League, but we know there were games last season where Cam got roasted a bit. I have no doubt he'll put the work in to be as good an on-ball defender as possible, so hopefully he can have as good if not a better career than Hauser, who, unlike Cam, can only play off the ball.

Retire the lazy narratives, Celtics just ran through the NBA this season and the ball was popping all over the place

Yep.

UConn was credited with an assist on 63.7% of its made baskets this season (630/989) -- quite amazing.

How does that compare to NBA teams?

Celtics: 61.3% (2207/3601)

Pacers: 65.4% (2522/3855)

Not a single NBA team averaged less than 23.1 apg this season.

Hauser held his own defensively enough where teams had to stop Hauser hunting, yes he gave up buckets, but it was inefficient and difficult.

Cam looks like an accountant and isn't super quick laterally. That said, his competitiveness is what will help him defensively. Just make the shot difficult. He isn't a stopper. But as long as defenders aren't abusing him at a 75% clip he will be fine. With his offensive ability, it's about competitiveness defensively.

NBA isn't about one on one. Pacers, Nuggets, Celtics...any team that went hard ISO 1-1 as its focous loses.

You can't play like that. It is inefficient.

The NBA media, which thinks the 1-on-1 ISO of the Jordan Era is the creme de la creme, is annoyed with Jayson Tatum because he doesn't ISO on the win enough and score.

Celtics played 4-the out and 5-out entire season and were moving the ball all over the pass with repeated dives to the paint when they were going well.

UConn may have had one of the better offenses in NCAA history. That assist level is incredible for a college team. Unstoppable. Ball moves faster than legs.

BTW. On Spencer...No one I talked to at UConn outside of the coaching staff knew anything about Spencer. They got the kid and I was like oh a Hawkins replace who can shoot the 3. Maybe he can help.

I have never heard of him since I don't want JV Big Ten hoops (though I love Pikiell). About 5 games into the season I was like....did you know he was that good? Everyone was like no idea.

That's not really the criticism of Tatum. The worst shots he takes are those side-step 3s.

He can create for himself and others but settling for (and missing) contested 3s and long 2s is something he needs to cut down in order to improve. Which he can do -- even as an NBA Champion and the guy with the biggest contract in NBA history.

Not sure which NBA media you're talking about because all the guys I listen to and follow love the way the Celtics play. I hated iso ball. Awful.

I usually take those summer workout things with a grain of sale.

Maybe it is the Ajou Deng hysteria. Still not over it.

With the preface that I am constantly wrong, on the basis of watching his highlight reels and a little game tape, I was extremely impressed with -- and had extremely high hopes for -- Spencer. Spencer's stats at Rutgers also backed up the eye test. Not going to say I expected him to be as amazing as he turned out to be, but you surround a great player with other great players and that's what can happen.

6/6/23: I want him more than I wanted Timberlake.

6/9/23: As terrific as Hawkins was, I think Spencer and our freshmen can probably fill his shoes.

8/7/23: Spencer is going to be amazing. He was great on Rutgets when teams could focus on him. Imagine how good he'll be on a team where everybody can pass and score.

8/7/23: Again with the caveat that it was against a 5th-going-on-4th French division team, Spencer's body control and BBIQ were very impressive. There was a semi-fast break where Cam, rather than lunging himself toward the basket and into a moving a defender, which may have drawn a foul but just as likely would have resulted in a miss or turnover, instead took a dribble left out of the paint, spun around and took an easy 4-footer. Smart and effective.

11/6/23: Although I haven't actually watched Spencer play like I have the returnees, I have pretty high hopes for him. He may not be as good as Newton as a creator but I view him as a better all-around player. Shooting, defense, ball protection.

(Might have been a little strong there.)

11/21/23: I'm often wrong in talent evaluation, but to me the difference between his highlight reel from Towson and Cam's from Rutgers were like night & day. I had no idea why KU and UConn were duking it out for Timberlake and was extremely happy when we got Cam instead.

So far, the game certainly doesn't seem too fast for Spencer. I get the feeling he's got this.

I certainly didn't, but midway through the season I went back and watched his Rutgers highlights, and there it was, Cam Spencer a monster waiting to happen. If you paid close enough attention to Rutgers, you'd have known. I sure didn't.

last June I was comparing Spencer to Nadav and said we would have highest iq/passing team in our history

Cam’s rebounding is really underrated. He has no business getting 7 rebounds at his size and “limited athleticism” against guys that can jump out of the gym. His bball IQ is what sets him apart as he’s a step ahead, almost always makes the right decision, keeps defenders off balance and guessing what he’s going to do, and puts himself in position to rebound.

Cam can simply get it done. Memphis is lucky to have him.
