When we were fundraising for the Cardiac Center late last year, we mentioned that we'd arrange a get-together around the Calhoun Cancer Walk and Ride.

And so we are.

The event takes place on June 8th at the Performing Arts Center on Iron Horse Boulevard in Simsbury.

The rides start between 7:30 and 11, depending on how far you want to go, and the 5K walk starts at 11:30 - you'd obviously want to show up a little early to register, etc.

Now, if you want to do the 5K walk with the Boneyard crew, the organizers have waived the entry fee - we just have to submit your information to them via paper form. If you want to walk, send me a private message and I'll handle getting you the form and getting that form submitted.

If you want to do one of the bike rides, you'll have to pay the registration fee ($20), but you can sign up online and not have to deal with me and the paper forms. (That's worth more than $20 right there.)

For both the walk and the rides, there are minimum fund raising targets. Don't let those scare you - we'll crowdsource this whole thing and see that the donation totals cover any individual requirements.

But, remember, we're doing this a) to get together to celebrate our success in raising $33,000 for the Cardiac Center and b) to raise money for the Neag Comprehensive Cancer Center at the UConn Health Center. Both, really, are an effort to show our appreciation to Jim Calhoun.

So, towards that end, do make an effort to meet the fundraising targets.

Two years ago, four of us did the ride and raised close to $8,000...I'd imagine we can top that this year with a gaggle of us showing up.

Now, after the walking and riding are done, we'll set up a pow-wow at the venue - we're still in planning mode on that front, but rest assured, it will happen and it will be spectacular. We'll prolly have elephants! Or hamburgers.

We're also working out some sort of deal where we can present the coach with something or other.

Those are minor details.

Step one, let's fill out a team.

If you want to ride 10, 25, 50 or 75 miles, go to THIS LINK RIGHT HERE and click the Join Our Team link at the top of the page.

(To the folks who rode the 50 last time around with me, I'm not sure I'll be riding this year - I might have a quick family obligation that morning that would prevent me from getting out in time to ride....to be determined.)

If you want to walk the 5K, send me a private message and we'll arrange that paperwork together. If you want to skip dealing with me, you are welcome to sign up via the link above and join the team with the $20 registration fee.

Additional note - I believe Kevin Ollie is co-hosting this shindig, so ten toes in and all that.

In addition to the walking and riding stuff, there is a brief ceremony that is scheduled from 1:30 to 1:50 p.m. that will likely be the time that Coach Calhoun will be presented with a big Boneyard check or something showing the total that was raised.

To show The Boneyard's appreciation of what Jim Calhoun has brought to all of us and the State of CT, we need Boneyarders to come and cheer at the time of the presentation.

So, even if you do not participate in the walking and riding, please plan to come out for a while to finish the recognition in a way that will personally show Jim Calhoun that we "get" the miracle that he accomplished in Storrs.

Let's finish this off the right way!

Good news on registration.

In support of "Bike to Work Week", if you register for the Walk/Ride between May 13th and May 17th, the registration fee will be reduced from $20.00 to $5.00.

So, now you have 3 options:

1) Register free through a paper submission process (see Fishy for details)
2) Register for $20.00 online (for you big spenders that don't care about costs)
3) Register between 5/13 and 5/17 for $5.00

So who is going to come out and join the Boneyard Bozo Brigade to walk (or ride) to fight cancer? Those who are out of state and unable to make it can participate by pledging money to support the cause. The total will go on the Big Check to show Jim Calhoun that The Boneyard "gets it" about what he has meant to our state and most importantly to the fans.

As of right now, we have about one person signed up.

If the physical act of walking is the impediment, I will bring a radio flyer and pull some of you.

Best of luck to all. My deceased father in law bequeathed a house and garage that is 88% full in a cubic foot sort of way. We're 5 roll-offs complete with 5 more to go. Weekends are shot.

One gallon of kerosene 'accidentally' kicked over + haphazardly tossed cigarette butt = free weekends.

We'll see you on the 8th.

What a great offer Deeps. Putting yourself out there, too! Appreciate it.

Alas, the only thing I can commit to this summer is this damned cleanup and Colorado vacation. We want to be done with the house that weekend.

I'd very much like to get there for the ceremony to say hello and thank you in person to all of you. Have a scheduling conflict, but will do my best to be there. Don't need or want to be part of the ceremony...just saying hello.

It doesn't sound like you're "ten toes in". Maybe you need to revise your sig line.

My concern is that if we don't get a lot more participants to be there to represent for The Boneyard, our demonstration of our appreciation of Coach Calhoun will seem lame. That's one thing.

The other thing is that our community has had some great treatment stories in the battles against cancer this year and this is a great time to show up for the medical research that needs to continue.

Finally, we need more Boneyarders in case Fishy has the need to punch someone in the throat. The more of us that are there, the less likely it will occur and the less likely any one of is to get throat punched.

How about the local long-timers? We need you guys there! Let's see some sign-ups! temery? DogMania? Hooper? AlexD? RichZ? Prankster? Hamster? Suzyq? 8893? I will say, the momentum behind the initial donations and retirement gift idea was something very cool and something I'll always be proud of being part of.....but the response to the walk so far has unfortunately not been near "inspiring".

I'm sure everyone has a handy excuse. I certainly could have drummed one up. Of the few that have signed up so far, one is driving from NY and the other is flying in from CA. So, I'm pretty sure you can put off your lawn for a couple hours. Maybe MakersMuppet needs to let you know what he thinks of the efforts.
