BYU Post Game Thread

I’m really looking forward to Mullins playing. We’re already a final four contender without him. I haven’t seen Houston play yet but I’m putting us in the top tier with Zona, Purdue, Bama, Duke.

Furphy might well not be part of it except if there’s an injury. But 8 guys played last night and none will be relegated to 0 minutes once Mullins is ready. It’ll go 9 deep anyway.

My view is, UConn was up 11 at halftime after being up 10-15 for a good stretch, had a nice run early in the half to increase the lead to as much as 20, and then BYU quickly got it back to the 10-15 range for a while. BYU then got hot shooting while UConn fell apart under pressure for basically five minutes, and BYU cut the deficit to 4-5. Then UConn got some of their rhythm back and handled the press a little better, managing to hold serve and maintain a small lead for the last five minutes, though if that game had been even 30 seconds longer, who knows if we hang on with so much foul trouble in our lineup?

But I don't see this as a "tale of two halves" quite as much as some folks. UConn's foul troubles were the biggest obstacle for them, and that was a problem that accumulated throughout the game. BYU's press worked in spurts (very early, and again midway through the second half).
 
Apparently you can't access content on fox sports app with the $30 a month fox one subscription.

And Fox One for some reason doesn't have the full game replay even though Fox sports has it.

Death to these greedy streaming companies.

For a kind of thin guy Saunders was pretty fearless around the rim and displayed smarts in making moves. Wonder if he is going to make it as a pro. Very worthy opponent.

I was impressed by Saunders. His only flaw against UConn was shooting 0 for 7 on threes. He had two early fouls but finished with three total. I did notice Solo going to the rim with his right hand. Just hope his long range shooting improves this season.

Beyond that, people's takes on Ross were 100% accurate. That he may be right now didn't make him right then. It's not a difficult concept.

It's not only the total number of fouls, it's also how and when they were called and on whom.

One of my big pet peeves is when refs call nothing in the first half and then everything in the second half. It messes up the flow of the game. It matters less to me how the game is called than that it's called consistently.

Similarly, when they were in the bonus and only had three fouls called against them, that made it really hard for us in the second half. A lot of of our key players were on the bench and the refs took away our ability to aggressively guard people. That changed the flow of the game dramatically and greatly contributed to their second half run. As often is the case, it seems like at one point they looked up at the scoreboard and said "oh crap this is really lopsided" and started calling more fouls on BYU. But, by that time, the damage was done and we had what four guys with four fouls?

Not that I'm not going all conspiracy theory on this and saying that the refs secretly hate us or in BYU's pocket. I am saying that the game was inconsistently called half to half and in the second half the fouls were very lopsided against Connecticut until about eight minutes to go or so. It is what it is, and we ended up winning, but it is a pet peeve.

He lifted it up his left completely and jumped off the right foot, thus switching the pivot foot. That is a travel all day, any day.
 
Missed most of the game but caught the last 6 minutes. Announcers mentioned we looked tired. What do y’all think?

That's not a walk on any level and never has been. You can lift your pivot foot all you want. You can't drag it or put it down.

You see similar moves a lot where the player drags but doesn't lift the pivot foot. That's a travel.

It’s a step through. It’s a very common basketball move and was 100% clean.

Reed 35 minutes. Karaban 39. Yeah, we were a bit gassed, but the comeback happened before that point.

Bad calls happen. It's idiotic for fans of any team to insist their team is targeted.

A blowout would not have been assumed haven't they already been up 20. That is something to consider here. Not being able to put a team away is something. When you're spotted a 20 point lead, they lose a starter to a concussion and you can't close, it means something.

Did we lose? What does it mean to put a team away? Is there a definition? I think it means winning, which we did

That’s what I watched but from three different postings. Some longer than others. I usually get my replay from here or the trustworthy overseas source that posts on YouTube. Lol.

We weren't spotted a 20 point lead, we shot the lights out in the 1st half to build up that lead, something that is not sustainable over a full 40 minute game. BYU shot very poorly, couldn't make a 3, and Dybantsa struggled, something that is not sustainable over a 40 minute game. I'm not surprised the guy who said all month we'd struggle OOC can't admit we had a great OOC win though
