BYU Post Game Thread

There were 2 straight possessions in the 2nd half where BYU clearly pushed off and scored. Dybantsa was one and one of the white dudes was the other. It was inconsistent reffing overall. Let 'em play in the first half and called everything in the 2nd.
Tough sequence for Malachi late in the game. Played matador defense on a guy going to the hoop and then stepped on the sideline on the other end.
Difficult 2nd half, but great game for hardening the team and giving Hurley teaching points.

He isn’t good. He has a broken shot and pounds the ball into the ground. Defensively he gets bullied when not 30 ft from the basket.

Dog check time from Silas when we needed it most. We were missing this last year.

For some players that was their first big pressure game in a sold out arena. Great experience for Smith, from whom I was expecting a bit more composure, and excellent minutes from Reibe and Ross, who will need to figure how to play D without fouling.

One thing that struck me, when we were up 3 and solo was going to the line for 2, he was playing to the crowd in the back court. AK ran back toward him and was telling him to get to line and get focused. Of course he went 1 for 2 and the game was not over.

If Mullins can shoot, we are going to be a killer dribble dive and kick team. While still having the resources to get to the rim and score in the paint.

So in 13 pages I didn't see much commentary about Dybantsa's first half. He looked like he was asleep. That's the Dybantsa I've ever seen whenever I watched him. That's the Dybantsa that Furphy defended in the U19. Granted the second half he looked like an NBA #1 but not on the defensive end. His performance is one reason I didn't think BYU was a FF contender. the other is RWIII. As a lead guard he looked good getting his but 4 assists and 6 TOs kind of tell the story that he is not a great PG. Silas on the other hand - Dog.

yes. it is clear that Ross is ahead of Stewart. I don’t understand why Stewart can’t hit his stride. He needs look at himself in mirror and say “I am going to be a great player and nothing is gonna stop me”. He needs to figure how to make games like this not happen.
Is part of it that he is playing out of position. He should be playing the 4 not 3.

We won, again, that's working. Early in the season you work on the system you need to win in March

My Avatar did exactly that. He took the air out of the ball and made his teams run the type of offense they're going to need to succeed long term

We gell, Calhoun was great in March, so is Hurley

Enjoy what we have, we're lucky. I'm a fan, my job is to support the team and scream at the refs. I leave the coaching to our sensational staff. They know how to win
I enjoy this team. It’s okay to have an opinion about what your observing

How does one take a half a step?
I ran my first marathon with a 6'4" buddy (I am 5'9"). I was warned not to run with him as he would "half step" me. Sure enough I always felt I was trying to keep up with him because his stride was that much longer. I was gassed by mile 18!

Later in the season this game will be pointed to as strong evidence for why we deserve a top seed. It’s November and we don’t even have our full lineup playing, and we already saw shades of March 23/24 by building a 20 point lead over a team we very well may meet again in the Final 4.

We have a fair number of these incredible players for just a few more months. Enjoy some basketball.

It would be nice if college refs would call a foul when the offensive player causes the contact and then gets the space to get their shot off.

Ridiculous take. They're another top 10 team. They made a run. It's basketball. Enjoy the win.

Why would I be concerned about beating a top 10 team? Do you guys imagine all the other teams win every game by 15? You know other top teams have close games too?

You don’t have to be I could care less if you are or aren’t honestly. That’s my opinion because the other close games you speak of, probably didn’t have 20 point leads 2nd half and watch their team look a little scared coming down the stretch. Trouble getting the ball in bounds, over half court in time and making awful decisions passing the ball. But hey you want to have a party because they beat BYU by all means have at it. I elect to see what our team will need to get better at so maybe don’t read my stuff????

We were absolutely pwning them. That is why that sloppy ending is so disappointing. We crushed them for 32 mins, but final score makes it look like a close gamea.
It was a close game. I give them credit for not quitting and playing for the full 40 minutes. They came close to stealing a win.

disagree. If we had kept running our offense they don’t get close. We stopped running our offense with 13 to go. That’s bananas. Hurley almost caused us this game. First, the constant fouling is a coaching issue. Our constant over reaching 15 feet from the basket is a coaching issue. Our inability to understand the type of game the refs are calling is a coaching issue. Finally, our stagnant offense for 10 minutes is a coaching issue. We have a great team. We just beat the 7th ranked team without a full roster. And that missing player may be our alpha offensively. I learned a lot from this win. I rather learn while winning!
Yeah, that guy stinks

I think its because we went from being euphoric we a re crushing BYU, to OMG we might blow this, and its natural for people emotionally invested to feel that way. Had we been behind and had some crazy comeback people’s mind set would have been different.

Why is it “we might blow this”? We’re the 6 time national champs and we have winning in our DNA. The crowd was 90% ours. Oh wait. I forgot we’re “dooooomed” (such a candyass trait).

Is part of it that he is playing out of position. He should be playing the 4 not 3.
Exactly, it shouldn’t be a surprise that the one thing he did well yesterday was his defense on Dybantsa at the 4. And when Mullins is back that's where the majority of his minutes will be coming from, and people will be shocked when he looks better

First of at least two, maybe three, pieces from Boston:

My most important takeaway from the game:

“There’s things we gotta fix. We’re still at the experimental stage of some stuff that we’re running and (edited) that we gotta get rid of. But I think the group’s got the potential to where the defense won’t hold us back from winning a championship this year.”

I was shouting about that at the game. He switched his pivot foot from his left foot to right foot .
He lifted it, but didn’t drag it or put it back down. It wasn’t a travel.
