And what a team she will have to practice with!!

This is great get for UCONN and for Natalie herself, great chance to learn from the greatest coaching staff in the country and fill a BIG void! Welcome, welcome!!

.-.
Roster next year now at 11.
I think this means 0 to 2 more players from the 2015 class.

Great stuff! So glad she chose UCONN! Welcome to the family!!

Seems like a great get for UCONN, will definitely help with post depth once Stokes and KML graduate. Question--anyone know why Butler wasn't recruited heavily in high school? Did she not play for a strong AAU team? Georgetown didn't exactly light it up last year, but Butler averaged 14 points, 13 rebounds, 2 blocks and 2 assists per game which is stellar by any standard, especially for a freshman. At 6-5 with a big frame and ability to score and rebound inside, I'm really surprised she wasn't a top 100 recruit.

How many players have transferred in during the Geno era? I can think of 8 before Butler.

  1. Rene Najarian
  2. Rita Williams '98
  3. Courtney Gaine '99 Sarah Northway
  4. Tihana Abrilic '99
  5. C Rigby '01
  6. R. Sadiq
  7. B. Hunter
  8. Jess McCormack

Until her senior year in HS, she didn't have that ability. She was a late developer.

Anchors Aweigh.....and a welcome and tip o' the cap to Pop and Mom Butler as well. KNEW I could count on a Navy man to do the right thing. Man oh man oh man..a proven player with size.
Welcome aboard and welcome to the family from another Naval Officer!

One of the biggest pick-ups for UCONN. You really needed a big and here she is. I hope this sends Brown Baylor's way.

.-.
Dare I say it? She sounds like the second coming of (gasp) Stefani the Great! But...can she dance and wear funny hats? (Oh yeah, and set bone-jarring picks.) Laissez les bon temps rouler!!

Natalie is a late bloomer, who is rapidly improving even now.

As a high school sophomore, she averaged 4.9 ppg and thought playing Division 1 basketball was only a dream.

As a junior, she improved to average 19 and 19, and got a number of scholarship offers. Late that season, she chose Georgetown. Most of the offers were from mid-level programs, though major programs like Baylor were beginning to show interest.

As a senior, she improved further and averaged 26, 18, and 10--a triple-double. She was named 1st Team All-State and 1st Team All-Met (DC area). People knew who she was her senior year, but she followed through on her commitment to Georgetown.

As a college frosh, she averaged about 14 and 13 and was one of the best rebounders in the nation, regardless of class. She was the unanimous Big East FOY and a top-15 frosh nationally.

The coaching changes at G'town likely were a reason for her looking to transfer. Odd circumstances, but we are the beneficiaries. I'm feeling very grateful!!! We need a center starting in 2015, and one of the best just landed in our lap. Amazing!!!

The recent commits by Collier, Boykin and Butler may have sent more than a ripple effect (not quite tsunami but more than a mere ripple) through the households of several families whose daughters are sitting on UConn wcbb scholarships.

They are looking in their own crystal balls and studying tea leaves. Surely they know that (focus on UConn) when the roster gets deep in talent, two things happen. Championship opportunities for the team go UP, but playing time for some players goes DOWN. The Brown family, knowing now that 6'5" Butler is en route to UConn, must be reassessing their daughter's prospects. Similar assessments must be taking place in other homes (Durr, Samuelson, Boley, Cox, Ogumwale, Jekot, McCoy, etc.)

All these families see the bus getting crowded and if they don't commit soon, they will lose their seat, so to speak.

Ah, to be a fly on the wall and listen to these lively discussions!

I think picking up Butler affects Brown in one way or another. I'm not sure it affects anyone else very much, though maybe it means that McCoy would not start as a frosh, of she picks UConn.

Clearly, UConn looks like a Final Four team for the next 4-5 years, at least. :)

Make that a Final 1 team please.

Some of the recruits you listed are from beyond 2015, and Stewie and Jefferson will graduate by then freeing up two more spots with Chong and Tuck the following year when recruits like Boley would be freshmen, so it's not as crowded as it seems. These days coaches have to be thinking two or three years down the road, which is kind of crazy, but that's how the recruiting game has evolved in college sports where in the most extreme cases you have kids in middle school receiving verbal offers. I would be happy if they land Samuelson to close out the class of '15. A class of Samuelson, Collier, and Boykin is pretty good. Hopefully DJ is working to land her good friend Samuelson. With the addition of Butler, Geno has just enough kids coming in over the next two years to cover the losses due to graduation over the next three. That's a pretty good overlap in terms of handing off the baton from upperclassmen loaded teams to one that's a bit younger while accounting for potential injuries or transfers.

Brown is staying right at home at LSU

Hey, this is great karma! Sawx told us that Butler was going to Va. and she is being fitted for a blue and white uni right now. His telling us that Brown is a done deal for LSU means that maybe there is hope that she will end up here. I am encouraged.

If durr, Samuelson, and brown are as good as advertised, they will not lack for playing time.
If Geno offers a scholarship, he generally wants the player regardless of who else comes. In recent years, he seems to have enough roster space, and is sufficiently conservative with his offers that he doesn't have to rescind any of them.
And he does not (seem to) recruit players who bring up playing time.
